Decoding ruminative reflection in healthy individuals: The role of triple network connectivity.

Ruminative reflection has been linked to enhanced executive control in processing internally represented emotional information, suggesting it may serve as an adaptive strategy for emotion regulation. Investigating the neural substrates of reflection can deepen our understanding of its adaptive properties. This study used network-based statistic (NBS)-Predict methodology to identify resting state functional connectivity (FC)-based predictors of ruminative reflection in a healthy sample. Our results showed that reflection in healthy subjects was predicted by FC within and between the default mod

Tinnitus and the Triple Network Model: A Perspective.

Tinnitus is defined as the conscious awareness of a sound without an identifiable external sound source, and tinnitus disorder as tinnitus with associated suffering. Chronic tinnitus has been anatomically and phenomenologically separated into three pathways: a lateral "sound" pathway, a medial "suffering" pathway, and a descending noise-canceling pathway. Here, the triple network model is proposed as a unifying framework common to neuropsychiatric disorders. It proposes that abnormal interactions among three cardinal networks-the self-representational default mode network, the behavioral relev

How aging affects the premotor control of lower limb movements in simulated gait.

Gait control becomes more demanding in healthy older adults, yet what cognitive or motor process leads to this age-related change is unknown. The present study aimed to investigate whether it might depend on specific decay in the quality of gait motor representation and/or a more general reduction in the efficiency of lower limb motor control. Younger and older healthy participants performed in fMRI a virtual walking paradigm that combines motor imagery (MI) of walking and standing on the spot with the presence (Dynamic Motor Imagery condition, DMI) or absence (pure MI condition) of overtly ex

Low and high stimulation frequencies differentially affect automated response selection in the superior parietal cortex - implications for somatosensory area processes.

Response inhibition as a central facet of executive functioning is no homogeneous construct. Interference inhibition constitutes a subcomponent of response inhibition and refers to inhibitory control over responses that are automatically triggered by irrelevant stimulus dimensions as measured by the Simon task. While there is evidence that the area-specific modulation of tactile information affects the act of action withholding, effects in the context of interference inhibition remain elusive. We conducted a tactile version of the Simon task with stimuli designed to be predominantly processed

"Benign" tremor? A serial case report of 2.5 year progression from mild cognitive impairment to amnestic dementia following deep brain stimulator placement for essential tremor.

Essential tremor (ET) is a prevalent neurological disorder with associated neuropsychological sequalae. Although cognitive deficits associated with ET are traditionally conceptualized as attention, processing speed, and executive impairments attributed to underlying frontal-subcortical dysfunction, emerging literature highlights the elevated frequency of progressive amnestic memory impairments in patients with ET. This case study centers around a 75-year-old woman with a 15-year history of ET who underwent deep brain stimulation (DBS) as well as three neuropsychological evaluations, one pre-su

Prefrontal activation related to spontaneous creativity with rock music improvisation: A functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Understanding how the brain modulates improvisation has been the focus of numerous studies in recent years. Models have suggested regulation of activity between default mode and executive control networks play a role in improvisational execution. Several studies comparing formulaic to improvised sequences support this framework and document increases in activity in medial frontal lobe with decreased activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). These patterns can be influenced through training and neural responses may differ between in beginner and expert musicians. Our goal was to t

Autonomic impairment in Alzheimer's disease is revealed by complexity analysis of functional thermal imaging signals during cognitive tasks.

OBJECTIVE: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by progressive memory failures and visuospatial impairment. Moreover, AD can be accompanied by autonomic system alterations, which, among other impacts, affect thermoregulatory activity. We here investigate differences in autonomic activity between AD patients and healthy controls (HC), employing a complexity analysis of functional infrared imaging (fIRI) data acquired at rest and during the execution of clinical cognitive and mnemonic tests. APPROACH: fIRI allows for contactless monitoring of autonomic activity and its thermoregulatory exp

Development and refinement of computer-assisted planning and execution system for use in face-jaw-teeth transplantation to improve skeletal and dento-occlusal outcomes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To describe the development and refinement of the computer-assisted planning and execution (CAPE) system for use in face-jaw-teeth transplants (FJTTs). RECENT FINDINGS: Although successful, some maxillofacial transplants result in suboptimal hybrid occlusion and may require subsequent surgical orthognathic revisions. Unfortunately, the use of traditional dental casts and splints pose several compromising shortcomings in the context of FJTT and hybrid occlusion. Computer-assisted surgery may overcome these challenges. Therefore, the use of computer-assisted orthognathic tech

Changes in cortical activity measured with EEG during a high-intensity cycling exercise.

This study investigated the effects of a high-intensity cycling exercise on changes in spectral and temporal aspects of electroencephalography (EEG) measured from 10 experienced cyclists. Cyclists performed a maximum aerobic power test on the first testing day followed by a time-to-exhaustion trial at 85% of their maximum power output on 2 subsequent days that were separated by ∼48 h. EEG was recorded using a 64-channel system at 500 Hz. Independent component (IC) analysis parsed the EEG scalp data into maximal ICs. An equivalent current dipole model was calculated for each IC, and results wer

Reduced Neural Differentiation Between Feedback Conditions After Bimanual Coordination Training with and without Augmented Visual Feedback.

It has been established that bimanual coordination with augmented feedback (FB) versus no augmented feedback (NFB) is associated with activity in different brain regions. It is unclear however, whether this distinction remains after practice comprising both these conditions. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used in humans to compare visual FB versus NFB conditions for a bimanual tracking task, and their differential evolution across learning. Scanning occurred before (Pre) and after 2 weeks (Post) of mixed FB and NFB training using an event-related design, allowing differentiation bet

Movement analysis and EEG recordings in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy.

Impaired hand function is often the most disabling symptom in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy (CP). Literature provides a wide number of studies dealing either with the kinematics or the cerebral correlates of the impairment. Nevertheless, few studies exist merging both aspects together. The aim of this study is the integrated analyses of time and spatial parameters of both the affected and less-affected sides and of the EEG signal, recorded during the movement execution, for the quantitative description of the pointing gesture in children with CP. The participants (pathological and co

A systems perspective on the effective connectivity of overt speech production.

The aim of this study was to provide a computational system model of effective connectivity in the human brain underlying overt speech production. Meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies and functional magnetic resonance imaging data acquired during a verbal fluency task revealed a core network consisting of Brodmann's area (BA) 44 in Broca's region, anterior insula, basal ganglia, cerebellum, premotor cortex (PMC, BA 6) and primary motor cortex (M1, areas 4a/4p). Dynamic causal modelling (DCM) indicated the highest evidence for a system architecture featuring the insula in a serial position bet

Executive dysfunction and neuropsychiatric symptoms predict lower health status in essential tremor.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the hypothesis that increased neuropsychiatric distress and cognitive impairment are associated with lower perceived health status in essential tremor (ET). BACKGROUND: Many patients with ET experience nonmotor complications, including lower perceived health status and poor health-related quality of life, which are associated with tremor severity, age, and personality factors. No studies, however, have examined the potential contribution of neuropsychiatric symptoms and cognitive deficits to health status in ET. METHOD: Forty-five patients with ET underwent comprehensi

Cognitive outcomes in patients with frontal lobe epilepsy.

A typical "cognitive profile" or defining behavioral syndrome for patients with frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) has not been described. While there have been numerous reports of impaired "executive functions" in this population, the nature and severity of these deficits is highly variable, ranging from impaired attention to difficulty with the more complex behaviors involved in planning, selecting goals, anticipating outcomes, and initiating action. These findings have been more difficult to demonstrate in children, in part due to the later appearance of these abilities in normal development. When

Compositional Structure of 24-H Movement Behaviors Moderates Neurocognitive Responses to Acute Aerobic Exercise in Healthy Adults: A Multimodal Investigation.

BACKGROUND: Acute aerobic exercise can transiently enhance executive function (EF) by modulating prefrontal neural activity, yet substantial interindividual variability in these effects suggests differences in neuroplasticity and responsiveness. However, it remains unclear how habitual 24-h movement behavior composition, encompassing sleep, sedentary behavior (SB), and light and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (LPA and MVPA) levels, may shape this baseline neurocognitive state, thereby influencing responsiveness to an acute exercise stimulus. METHODS: Sixty-eight healthy young adults (

Plasma suPAR and domain-specific cognitive performance in virologically suppressed women with HIV.

Cognitive impairment remains common among people living with HIV despite effective antiretroviral therapy, with women disproportionately affected. Identifying stable and scalable inflammatory biomarkers that reflect domain-specific vulnerability is important for improving risk assessment in this population. Soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) is a circulating marker of immune activation with established analytical stability and prognostic value across multiple inflammatory conditions, including HIV. However, its relationship to cognitive performance in virologically suppre

Potential Delayed Positive Effects of tDCS on Improving Introspective Accuracy in Social Cognition in Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Impairments in introspective accuracy (IA) are prominent among schizophrenia patients and detrimentally affect daily functioning, making IA a potential therapeutic target. Recent research highlights the role of the right rostrolateral prefrontal cortex (rlPFC) in IA and suggests that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to this region may improve it. Therefore, we tested whether applying tDCS to the right rlPFC could enhance IA for schizophrenia patients and explored the potential order/delayed effects. STUDY DESIGN: A randomized, double-blind, sham-contro

Transcranial temporal interference stimulation for treating bipolar disorder with depressive episodes: a feasibility Study.

Bipolar depression (BD-D) is a significant clinical challenge associated with high disease burden. Transcranial temporal interference stimulation (tTIS), a novel and noninvasive approach for targeting deep brain structures, was investigated for its efficacy and safety in BD-D patients in this trial. Thirty-six patients were recruited for a single-arm, open-label trial, and 25 completed the 5-day intervention consisting of 10 tTIS sessions targeting the left nucleus accumbens. Each session lasted 20 min, with a maximum current intensity of 2 mA and an envelope stimulation frequency of 40 Hz. Si

Core networks related disrupted effective connectivity and relationship with sleep disturbances in internet gaming disorder.

BACKGROUND: Internet gaming disorder (IGD) is characterized by increased gaming cravings and sleep disturbances. However, previous studies mainly focused on the relationship between undirected connections among brain regions and IGD features, and rarely reported on directed connections among networks. METHODS: This study, based on 66 male IGD subjects and 53 healthy controls (HCs), assessed the effective connectivity (EC) differences of intra- and inter-networks for each subject using spectral dynamic causal modeling from eight interest regions (ROI) in the default mode (DMN), salience (SN),
