Effects of 30 days of undernutrition on reaction time, moods, and symptoms.

Few modern studies have addressed the effects of undernutrition on the behavior of healthy individuals. This study, conducted as part of a test of a nutritionally balanced but calorie-deficient experimental ratio, examined the effects of 30 days of undernutrition on healthy, physically active soldiers. Tests of reaction time and standardized questionnaires assessing mood and symptom parameters (known to be sensitive to nutritional and other factors) were administered prior to and following a 30-day field exercise. During the exercise, 17 soldiers consumed a calorie-deficient, lightweight ratio

Naloxone augments muscle sympathetic nerve activity during isometric exercise in humans.

The influence of an endogenous opioid peptide (EOP) antagonist (naloxone, 1.2 mg iv bolus) on muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA, microneurography) was studied on 19 young male and female volunteers. Isometric handgrip, cold pressor test, and acute baroreceptor unloading with sodium nitroprusside (autonomic stresses) were carried out under two conditions, one group (n = 11) before (control responses) and after naloxone and another group (n = 8) before and after placebo saline. Monitored cardiovascular variables included heart rate, central venous pressure (jugular vein catheter), arterial

[Simultaneous appearance of precordial pain and effort-induced left bundle branch block. A study of 6 patients with normal coronary angiography].

6 patients, 4 men and 2 women, aged 38 to 60 years, were hospitalised for chest pain on effort, labelled as angina. The resting electrocardiogram was normal, except in 2 cases with incomplete left bundle branch block. Exercise stress testing induced simultaneous chest pain and complete left bundle branch block (LBBB) (at a rate of 15 to 160 beats/min, mean 115). The pain lasted as long as the LBBB was present and eased as it disappeared. All patients had normal coronary angiography and negative provocative tests of coronary spasm with atrial stimulation (4 cases), isoprenaline test (2 cases),

Determinants of Improved Dyspnea and Exercise Tolerance With Nasal High-Flow O2 Therapy in Fibrotic Interstitial Lung Disease: A Pilot Physiological Study.

We tested the respective effect of high-flow and supplemental O2 from nasal high-flow O2 therapy (NHFO2) on dyspnea and exercise tolerance in fibrotic interstitial lung disease. Supplemental O2 and NHFO2 (but not high-flow) provided improvements in these outcomes at "iso-O2 saturation" due to reduced ventilatory requirements. Physiological benefits derived from O2 supplementation are thus likely primary drivers of dyspnea relief and improved exercise tolerance on NHFO2 (vs air) in these patients.

Impairment of Cardiovascular Functional Capacity in Mild-to-Moderate Kidney Dysfunction.

KEY POINTS: Mild-to-moderate CKD is associated with impairment in cardiovascular functional capacity as assessed by oxygen uptake at peak exercise (VO2Peak). Cardiac output is significantly reduced in patients with mild-to-moderate CKD and is associated with impaired VO2Peak. Assessment of VO2Peak by cardiopulmonary exercise testing can detect decrements in cardiovascular function during early stages of kidney function decline that may not be captured using resting left ventricular geometric indices alone. BACKGROUND: Traditional diagnostic tools that assess resting cardiac function and struc

Effectiveness of Specific Neck Exercise for Nonspecific Neck Pain; Usefulness of Strategies for Patient Selection and Tailored Exercise-A Systematic Review With Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Specific neck exercises (SNE) targeting deep cervical flexors and extensors are commonly used for the treatment of nonspecific neck pain (NSNP). However, whether SNE are more effective than alternative exercise interventions (AEI) remains unclear. Furthermore, it has been postulated that SNE may be most effective when they are tailored and targeted to patients with evidence of motor control dysfunction, yet this notion also remains unproven. The objectives of this study were to compare the effectiveness of SNE with that of AEI for reducing pain and disability in people with NSNP and

Poor ventilatory efficiency during exercise may predict prolonged air leak after pulmonary lobectomy.

UNLABELLED: Poor ventilatory efficiency, defined as the increase in minute ventilation relative to carbon dioxide production during exercise (VE/VCO2 slope), may be associated with dynamic hyperinflation and thereby promote the development of prolonged air leak (PAL) after lung resection. Consecutive lung lobectomy candidates (n = 96) were recruited for this prospective two-centre study. All subjects underwent pulmonary function tests and cardiopulmonary exercise testing prior to surgery. PAL was defined as the presence of air leaks from the chest tube on the 5th postoperative day and develope

The Effects of Beta Blockers on Exercise Tolerance and Quality of Life in Congestive Heart Failure Patient.

BACKGROUND: Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a serious cardiovascular condition that lowers quality of life (QoL) and impairs exercise tolerance. In terms of morbidity and mortality, beta-blockers, which are often employed in the treatment of CHF, have demonstrated notable advantages. The purpose of this study was to assess how beta-blockers affected the exercise tolerance and QoL of CHF patients. Materials and Methods: In a prospective observational trial, 100 CHF patients between the ages of 40 and 70 were divided into two groups: 50 in the beta-blocker treatment group and 50 in the control

Chronotropic Response to Exercise is Decreased in Patients With Congenital Heart Disease Compared to Cardiomyopathy Following Pediatric Heart Transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Two common indications for pediatric heart transplantation are congenital heart disease and cardiomyopathy. Prior studies suggest differences in chronotropy on cardiopulmonary exercise testing outcomes depending on indication for heart transplantation. We aimed to determine whether the number of pretransplant sternotomies is associated with differences in heart rate response during exercise testing. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of our institutional pediatric heart transplant data between 2004 and 2022 was performed. Patients were categorized by indication for transplantation

Dyspnea Postpulmonary Embolism From Physiological Dead Space Proportion and Stroke Volume Defects During Exercise.

BACKGROUND: Many patients with pulmonary embolism (PE) report dyspnea on exertion following long-term treatment. Increased physiological dead space proportion (VD/VT) and decreased cardiac stroke volume reserve may distinguish persistent effects of PE itself from symptoms reflecting comorbid conditions or deconditioning. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed a consecutive series of incremental symptom-limited cardiopulmonary exercise tests that had been ordered to evaluate persistent dyspnea on exertion following long-term treatment for acute PE. Physiological VD/VT was determined at ana

Effects of submersion on VO2: comparing maximum aerobic exertion on land and underwater.

INTRODUCTION: Submersion results in blood redistribution into the pulmonary circulation, causing changes in pulmonary compliance and increased cardiac preload. Few studies have compared incremental exercise to exhaustion (VO2 max testing) in a dry environment with exercise underwater. We hypothesized that the physiological effects of submersion would result in lower heart rate (HR), minute ventilation (VE), and peak oxygen uptake (VO2 peak) compared with dry conditions. METHODS: Fourteen male and four female volunteers completed two VO2 peak testing sessions with approximately two hours betwe

Cardiovascular responses to epinephrine-containing local anesthetics for dental use: a comparison of hemodynamic responses to infiltration anesthesia and ergometer-stress testing.

OBJECTIVE: Cardiovascular effects of infiltration anesthesia have been documented in numerous studies. However, few studies have been carried out to compare the effects of infiltration anesthesia with the effects of exercise-stress testing. The purpose of this study was to examine this issue. STUDY DESIGN: Eight young and 13 older subjects were given infusions of epinephrine to produce cardiovascular responses comparable with those found in subjects undergoing infiltration anesthesia with 3.6 mL of lidocaine with 1:80,000 epinephrine (L-E). Cardiovascular responses to this drug treatment were

Relation between the electrocardiographic stress test and degree and location of myocardial ischemia.

Factors that influence frequency and location of stress-induced electrocardiographic (ECG) ST depression and the development of chest pain are incompletely understood. We studied 331 patients with ischemic myocardial nuclear defects in response to routine clinical treadmill testing with simultaneous ECG recording. Nuclear defects were analyzed for location and extent of myocardium involved. Exercise-induced ischemic ST changes were demonstrated in 59% of patients (196 of 331). Subjects with stress-induced ECG changes and/or chest pain had more extensive nuclear perfusion defects. Diabetic pati
