Perceptions of tick-borne encephalitis risk: a survey of travellers and travel clinics from Canada, Germany, Sweden and the UK.

BACKGROUND: While the worldwide endemicity of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) has been increasing, a lack of awareness of the risks of this life-threatening disease may be leading to an underutilization of preventive measures among travellers to TBE-endemic regions. This study's objectives were to assess travellers' awareness of TBE and advice-seeking attitudes, and to evaluate practices of travel clinics regarding pre-travel advice. METHODS: We used an online questionnaire to identify individuals aged 18-65 years residing in the UK, Germany, Canada and Sweden, who had travelled to TBE-endemic

Isospora borbai n. sp. (Chromista: Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) from gnateaters Conopophaga spp. (Passeriformes: Tyranni: Conopophagidae) in South America.

BACKGROUND: The gnateaters Conopophaga spp. are insectivorous passerines commonly observed in high and humid forests, where they remain lodged in thin branches and, sometimes, they fly to the ground to catch insects. The insectivorous feeding habit is related to low prevalence and density of coccidians in passerines; however, several coccidian species are recorded for families of insectivorous passerines. PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine the feces from gnateaters Conopophaga spp. captured in the municipality of Barra Mansa and in the Itatiaia National Park, State of Rio de Janeiro, Southe

Pododermatitis in group housed rabbit does in Switzerland-Prevalence, severity and risk factors.

In rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus L.), pododermatitis is a chronic multifactorial skin disease that appears mainly on the plantar surface of the hind legs. In later stages, it causes pain leading to poor welfare of affected animals. Pododermatitis is commonly observed in commercial rabbit production in breeding does housed with wire mesh flooring. However, the prevalence in breeding does that are housed in groups on litter and plastic slats is not known. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the frequency, the severity and possible risk factors of pododermatitis in group hou

Species-specific ecological niche modelling predicts different range contractions for Lutzomyia intermedia and a related vector of Leishmania braziliensis following climate change in South America.

BACKGROUND: Before 1996 the phlebotomine sand fly Lutzomyia neivai was usually treated as a synonym of the morphologically similar Lutzomyia intermedia, which has long been considered a vector of Leishmania braziliensis, the causative agent of much cutaneous leishmaniasis in South America. This report investigates the likely range changes of both sand fly species in response to a stabilisation climate change scenario (RCP4.5) and a high greenhouse gas emissions one (RCP8.5). METHODS: Ecological niche modelling was used to identify areas of South America with climates currently suitable for ea

Prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi in ticks removed from skin of people and circumstances of being bitten - research from the area of Poland, 2012-2014.

INTRODUCTION: During feeding, the tick sucks blood from the host along with the pathogens that are in the blood, simultaneously exchanging its own pathogens with the host. Humans can also be a host. It is important to understand the most typical circumstances in which people might become infected with Borrelia burgdorferi. This knowledge will help to prepare health education programmes aimed at the prevention of Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine the percentage of ticks infected with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, depending on the ci

Study of microRNAs-21/221 as potential breast cancer biomarkers in Egyptian women.

microRNAs (miRNAs) play an important role in cancer prognosis. They are small molecules, approximately 17-25 nucleotides in length, and their high stability in human serum supports their use as novel diagnostic biomarkers of cancer and other pathological conditions. In this study, we analyzed the expression patterns of miR-21 and miR-221 in the serum from a total of 100 Egyptian female subjects with breast cancer, fibroadenoma, and healthy control subjects. Using microarray-based expression profiling followed by real-time polymerase chain reaction validation, we compared the levels of the two

Relationship between photosynthetic phosphorus-use efficiency and foliar phosphorus fractions in tropical tree species.

How plants develop adaptive strategies to efficiently use nutrients on infertile soils is an important topic in plant ecology. It has been suggested that, with decreasing phosphorus (P) availability, plants increase photosynthetic P-use efficiency (PPUE) (i.e., the ratio of instantaneous photosynthetic carbon assimilation rate per unit foliar P). However, the mechanism to increase PPUE remains unclear. In this study, we tested whether high PPUE is explained by an optimized allocation of P in cells among P-containing biochemical compounds (i.e., foliar P fractions). We investigated the relation

Epidemiological management of rabies in Romania.

INTRODUCTION: Transmission of rabies to humans occurs rarely in Europe but in the absence of vaccination, it almost invariably leads to a fatal disease. In 2007, Romania implemented a program for rabies eradication in foxes. METHODS: We performed a descriptive study evaluating the trend of rabies disease in Romania, both in animals and in humans, between 2008-2012. RESULTS: In the past years, a large number of adults have presented to the Antirabic Center of the National Institute for Infectious Diseases "Prof.Dr. Matei Balş", Bucharest, Romania. The major bite-inflicting animals were cats a

Gaseous elemental mercury emissions and CO(2) respiration rates in terrestrial soils under controlled aerobic and anaerobic laboratory conditions.

Mercury (Hg) levels in terrestrial soils are linked to the presence of organic carbon (C). Carbon pools are highly dynamic and subject to mineralization processes, but little is known about the fate of Hg during decomposition. This study evaluated relationships between gaseous Hg emissions from soils and carbon dioxide (CO(2)) respiration under controlled laboratory conditions to assess potential losses of Hg to the atmosphere during C mineralization. Results showed a linear correlation (r(2)=0.49) between Hg and CO(2) emissions in 41 soil samples, an effect unlikely to be caused by temperatur

New localities of Dermacentor reticulatus tick (vector of Babesia canis canis) in central and eastern Poland.

Dermacentor reticulatus tick is a vector and final host of Babesia canis canis, protozoan parasite of the dog. In Poland and other European countries, endemic regions for canine babesiosis caused by B. canis canis are the same as endemic regions for D. reticulatus. In many of these regions, canine babesiosis is the most prevalent tick-borne disease in dogs. In Europe, increasing range of geographical distribution of D. reticulatus is observed. A consequence of this fact may be increasing range of canine babesiosis. D. reticulatus is one of the most common ticks occurring in Poland, however, it

Capturing the spectrum of interaction effects in genetic association studies by simulated evaporative cooling network analysis.

Evidence from human genetic studies of several disorders suggests that interactions between alleles at multiple genes play an important role in influencing phenotypic expression. Analytical methods for identifying Mendelian disease genes are not appropriate when applied to common multigenic diseases, because such methods investigate association with the phenotype only one genetic locus at a time. New strategies are needed that can capture the spectrum of genetic effects, from Mendelian to multifactorial epistasis. Random Forests (RF) and Relief-F are two powerful machine-learning methods that

HIV/AIDS: the first 25 years--a view from Nairobi.

HIV infections are zoonoses occurring in communities that hunt chimpanzees (HIV 1) and sooty mangabeys (HIV 2) in the forests of equatorial and West Africa respectively. Most cross species transmission to man probably fizzles out, but the transmission of HIV 1 type M around 1930 eventually resulted in a pandemic that has spread around the world. HIV 2 types A and B have caused epidemics in West Africa. HIV infections are characterised by three phases (i) an initial, primary infective phase with rising viraemia, asymptomatic and silent, lasting for some 10 weeks, (ii) a long quiescent phase wit

Geographical information systems and bootstrap aggregation (bagging) of tree-based classifiers for Lyme disease risk prediction in Trentino, Italian Alps.

The risk of exposure to Lyme disease in the province of Trento, Italian Alps, was predicted through the analysis of the distribution of Ixodes ricinus (L.) nymphs infected with Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. with a model based on bootstrap aggregation (bagging) of tree-based classifiers within a geographical information system (GIS). Data on L ricinus density assessed by dragging the vegetation in 438 sites during 1996 were cross-correlated with the digital cartography of a GIS, which included the variables altitude, exposure and slope, substratum, vegetation type and roe deer density. Ticks were m

PerioTwin-DeltaCRED: a validation-aware physiological digital twin for longitudinal periodontal treatment response prediction.

BACKGROUND: Predicting individual periodontal treatment response remains clinically unresolved. Existing machine-learning models are predominantly cross-sectional, lack a longitudinal response-vector design, and are rarely evaluated within validation-aware digital-twin frameworks that capture multidimensional credibility rather than single-endpoint discrimination alone. This study aimed to develop and evaluate PerioTwin-DeltaCRED, a validation-aware periodontal digital twin that models treatment response as a longitudinal PPD and CAL response vector, and to benchmark classical and quantum mach

Successional patterns of fungal communities in needles of European silver fir (Abies alba Mill.).

Successions of fungal communities in mature, senescing and decomposing needles of silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) were studied at two sites in Switzerland. These were in naturally regenerated forest (Ruswil) on soils of pH 4.0 to 4.5 and in planted forest (Üetliberg) on soils of pH 6.5 to 7.0. Attached green symptomless needles of two age classes (1- to 2 and 4- to 7-yr-old), partly brown senescent needles, entirely brown needles and litter needles were collected, surface-sterilized and incubated on 2% MEA amended with 50 mgl-1 terramycin to isolate fungi from within the tissues. Automatic diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus with mild cognitive impairment using artificial intelligence based on routine T1-weighted MRI.

BACKGROUND: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) exhibit a heightened susceptibility to developing dementia, especially those who already present with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Nevertheless, the fundamental etiology remains elusive, underscoring the pressing need for an objective and precise diagnostic approach in clinical settings. This study investigates the utilization of machine learning algorithms in conjunction with high-resolution sagittal T1-weighted structural imaging to facilitate automated diagnosis of T2DM patients with MCI, differentiating them from both T2DM patie
