The clinical impressions of the authors and a survey of mucogingival problems in children lead to the following conclusions: 1. Mucogingival problems occur in children. 2. The prevalence of such problems is 12 to 19% in sample of 100 patients examined. 3. Insufficient keratinized tissue is developmentally related to: a. eruption pattern of the permanent incisors. b. buccolingual width of the alveolar process. 4. The autogenous free gingival graft is recommended as an acceptable procedure to prevent incipient mucogingival problems from progressing. 5. Where orthodontic therapy is anticipated an

This review aimed to identify newly discovered bacteria from individuals with periodontal/peri-implant diseases and organize them into new clusters (GF-MoR complexes) to update Socransky's complexes (1998). For methodological development, the PCC (Population, Concept, Context) strategy was used for the focus question construction: "In patients with periodontal and/or peri-implant disease, what bacteria (microorganisms) were detected through laboratory assays?" The search strategy was applied to PubMed/MEDLINE, PubMed Central, and Embase. The search key terms, combined with Boolean markers, wer

Regular home care by the patient in addition to professional removal of subgingival plaque is generally very effective in controlling most inflammatory periodontal diseases. When disease does recur, despite frequent recall, it can usually be attributed to lack of sufficient supragingival and subgingival plaque control or to other risk factors that influence host response, such as diabetes or smoking. Causative factors contributing to recurrent disease include deep inaccessible pockets, overhangs, poor crown margins and plaque-retentive calculus. In most cases, simply performing a thorough peri

Periodontal diseases (gingivitis and periodontitis) are characterized by inflammatory processes which arise as a result of disruption of the balance in the oral ecosystem. According to the current S3 level clinical practice guidelines, therapy of patients with periodontitis involves a stepwise approach that includes the control of the patient's risk factors and the debridement of supra and subgingival biofilm. This debridement can be performed with or without the use of some adjuvant therapies, including physical or chemical agents, host modulating agents, subgingivally locally delivered antim

Inadequate oral hygiene is the root cause of the initiation and establishment of the periodontal disease. Dental calculus serves as plaque retentive area, thereby contributing to gingivitis and periodontitis. The present unusual case is of a 55-year-old female patient reported to the department of periodontology with a chief complaint of hard deposit at the right maxillary and mandibular posterior region. The patient was found to have very heavy calculus deposition with respect to right maxillary and mandibular posterior teeth, and the patient was using the left side for mastication and avoidi

Even though dental care is sometimes erroneously considered a modern practice, written records from major ancient civilisation all around the world date back to several millennia BC. In particular, in the Middle Ages, among the tenth and thirteenth centuries, the illustrious Medical School of Salerno in Italy, the most important institution in the Western world for the diffusion of medical knowledge, disseminated through its precepts the importance of oral hygiene and practiced specific dental therapies for tooth decay, gingivitis, paradentosis and halitosis among others. Interestingly, severa

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The present article reviews the current knowledge of halitosis with particular emphasis upon the interplay of diet and disease of the gastrointestinal tract upon oral malodour.
RECENT FINDINGS: Transient-altered breath smell usually reflects the effects of foodstuffs, whereas longstanding halitosis is almost always because of oral disease such as gingivitis or periodontitis. There is, however, increasing evidence that upper gastrointestinal tract disease may give rise to halitosis and that extracts of foodstuffs may be future therapeutic agents for the treatment of halitosi

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is one of the most dangerous psychiatric diseases; it bears a poor prognosis, marked addictive potential and a high risk of suicide. The earlier the eating disorder is diagnosed and treated, the better the prognosis of AN. A number of dermatological conditions may be associated with AN, although none are specific for AN. These findings include xerosis cutis, effluvium, gingivitis, cheilitis, acne and nail lesions. The cutaneous findings often observed in AN may be localized to the hands ("anorectic hand"), which should therefore always be examined if AN is suspected. The

Tooth brushing is considered a superior technique for reducing plaque accumulation. Chemical agents may be used to reduce plaque accumulation on tooth surfaces since many owners may not be willing or able to brush their dog's teeth. Following a professional teeth cleaning procedure, a dental gel containing chlorhexidine was applied in 11 dogs BID for 7-days, while 11 other dogs received a control dental gel applied in the same manner. Dogs in the treatment group had significantly less plaque accumulation during the trial period compared with dogs in the control group. The dental gel applied in

This study showed that impoverished Nigerian children at risk for cancrum oris (noma) had significantly reduced plasma concentrations of zinc (< 10.8 micromol/L), retinol (< 1.05 micromol/L), ascorbate (< 11 micromol/L), and the essential amino acids, with prominently increased plasma and saliva levels of free cortisol, compared with their healthy counterparts. The nutrient deficiencies, in concert with previously reported widespread viral infections (measles, herpesviruses) in the children, would impair oral mucosal immunity. We postulate, subject to additional studies, that evolution of the

Eight patients with Hyper-IgM syndrome were subjected to clinical and immunological evaluation. There were seven males and one female. All the patients had recurrent pyogenic infections; one had lymphoid hyperplasia with centrally necrotic granulomas, and one had gingivitis with neutropenia. Isohemagglutinin titers were either high or normal in all the patients and five had group 0 blood. The percentage of IgM-bearing cells were normal in five patients. The percentage of T cells were normal in all the patients, helper T cells were decreased in two patients, and suppressor T cells were increase

The sixth case of an allergic contact gingivostomatitis to gold crowns previously misdiagnosed as erosive lichen planus is reported. Patch tests to gold chloride (0.5%) and 0.05 cm3 intradermal gold sodium thiomalate (Myochrysine 50 mg/cm3) were positive at 48-72 h. Histopathology of the allergic contact gingivitis revealed a pseudolymphomatous inflammatory dermal reaction with a dense lymphohistiocytic and plasma cell infiltrate. Removal of the gold crowns resulted in a gradual resolution of the gingivostomatitis in 4-6 months, and the patient has remained free of clinical disease for over 3

BACKGROUND: The poor marginal adaptation, sub-gingival margin placement and over-contoured crowns can contribute to localized periodontal inflammation. Besides, lack of proper clinical expertise of the restorative dentist can result in the excessively deep subgingival margin placement and inconsistencies in the margins preparation. This can lead to loss of marginal integrity, poor adaptation of the crowns and eventually periodontal breakdown. The aim of the study was to compare the periodontal condition of abutment and non-abutment teeth in a group of Nepali adult patients with fixed dental pr

BACKGROUND: India lacks organized school oral health programs, resulting in limited access to oral health care among children. The peer role models, or teachers, may help in bridging the gap to enhance knowledge on self-care preventive practices. The aim of the study was to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of dental health education (DHE) offered by qualified dental professional, trained teachers, and peer role models in promoting oral hygiene status and behavior among school-going children in Mysuru, Karnataka.

INTRODUCTION: Restrictive type of anorexia nervosa (AN) is still one of the most severe eating disorders worldwide with an uncertain prognosis. Patients affected by AN should be encouraged to undertake psychiatric care and psychotherapy, but whether they should necessarily be included in careful dental care or not may still be questionable. Even though there is a constantly increasing number of AN studies, there are just a few data about the youngest group of AN children and adolescents aged < 18.
METHODOLOGY: This case-control study aimed to compare the dental health and gingival inflammatio

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a chronic disease characterized by a progressive and irreversible destruction of the tooth-supporting tissues, including gingiva and periodontal ligament (PDL). Microorganisms, such as Fusobacterium nucleatum, evoke an inflammatory host response, which leads to increased levels of inflammatory mediators, such as interleukin (IL)-1β. Periodontitis has been linked to obesity, and adipokines have been suggested to represent a pathomechanistic link. The hormone somatostatin (SST) exerts antiproliferative, antiangiogenetic, proapoptotic, anti-nociceptive and other effec

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Dental cements for cement-retained restorations are often chosen based on clinician preference for the product's material properties, mixing process, delivery mechanism, or viscosity. The composition of dental cement may play a significant role in the proliferation or inhibition of different bacterial strains associated with peri-implant disease, and the effect of dental cements on host cellular proliferation may provide further insight into appropriate cement material selection.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the cellular host response of

BACKGROUND: Systemic disease and hormonal changes have been implicated as complicating factors for periodontal disease. Diabetes has been identified as a risk factor for periodontal disease, and diabetics can experience periodontal destruction at an earlier age than non-diabetic individuals. Increased hormone levels during pregnancy can contribute to increased gingival inflammation. The purpose of this study was to examine the association of type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM) on the periodontal status of pregnant women.
METHODS: Thirty-three (13 diabetic and 20 non-diabetic) subjects, 20 to 39 wee
