Plica Polonica in a Patient on Chemotherapy: A Case Report with Review of Literature.

Plica polonica (plica neuropathica) is an uncommon entity characterized by irreversible twisting and matting of hair resulting in a hard impermeable mass of keratin. Although the exact mechanism is not fully understood, it has been attribute to longitudinal splitting or weathering of hair shaft due to vigorous friction and frequent use of harsh shampoos and harsh cleansers and/or due to keeping long hair with poor hair care or neglect, parasitic infection. We describe an unusual case of plica polonica occurring in a patient of lung adenocarcinoma on chemotherapy and review the literature. Anag

[The influence of glucocorticoids on the view of chicken's inner ear damage after exposure to wide-band-noise].

The aim of the study was to assess the influence of glucocorticoids on the view of hair cell regeneration process being in the chicken's inner ear (basilar papilla - BP) after exposure to wide-band noise at the level 120 dB (A) for 48 hours. We found that glucocorticoids given during and/or after exposure to the noise have a cytoprotective activity to the hair cells, they limitate the extensiveness and decrease the dynamics of hair cells injury. We observed that new "young" hair cells reappeared at the sensory epithelium on the 7th day after the end of exposure. Regenerated hair cells have imm

Trichoscopic Features of Syphilitic Alopecia and Alopecia Areata: A Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Syphilitic alopecia (SA) and alopecia areata (AA) are two distinct conditions that frequently present diagnostic difficulties, especially when differentiating between them due to their similar clinical presentations. Trichoscopy may help in differential diagnosis, but a comparison between trichoscopic features of SA and AA is yet to be researched. OBJECTIVE: To compare trichoscopic features between SA and AA and determine their discriminative values. METHODS: Electronic medical records and trichoscopic images of patients diagnosed with SA or AA between January 2000 and February 2

Centrifugal lipodystrophy of the scalp manifesting as centrifugal lipodystrophic alopecia.

Centrifugal lipodystrophy (CLD), characterized by a depressed lesion in the abdominal skin, is a chronic disease occurring more often among younger patients of East Asian descent. We present an extremely unusual case of CLD of the scalp associated with reversible hair loss. The patient demonstrated alopecia in the frontal, temporal and occipital areas of the scalp, which connected to form a ring-shaped area of hair loss. Curiously, the area of hair loss gradually expanded outwards while the central region showed normal hair regrowth. Immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated reduced expression

Trichothiodystrophy without associated neuroectodermal defects.

Trichothiodystrophy leading to generalized trichorrhexis nodosa-like hair changes with abnormal hair breakage is described in a 4-year-old girl. A marked deficiency of sulphur and the sulphur-containing amino acid, cystine, was detected in the biochemical analysis of the hair. Further investigation of the hair showed the morphological criteria of trichothiodystrophy. Commonly related symptoms, such as mental retardation, ichthyosis and increased sensitivity to sunlight, were not present in our patient.

Plant Nanovesicles Integrate Bioactivity and Transdermal Finasteride Delivery for Androgenetic Alopecia.

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a progressive hair loss disorder with limited effective therapeutic options. Although finasteride (FIN) remains a first-line treatment, its oral administration is frequently associated with systemic side effects. To overcome this limitation, we developed biomimetic Platycladi cacumen-derived nanovesicles (PcNs)─a traditional medicinal herb known for its hair-growth-promoting properties─as multifunctional carriers for transdermal FIN delivery. PcNs significantly enhanced skin permeation and local drug retention, promoting drug accumulation within the epidermal and

Th,-e mechanistic insights into the application of retinoids and possible adjunct therapeutic treatment to androgenic alopecia.

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a common, nonscarring hair loss condition affecting both men and women, often leading to psychological distress and reduced self-esteem. It involves the gradual miniaturization of hair follicles and a shortened anagen phase, primarily influenced by genetic predisposition and androgenic activity, especially dihydrotestosterone. The paradoxical role of androgens - promoting hair growth in some areas while suppressing it on the scalp - has been key in understanding AGA's pathogenesis. Altered androgen receptor signaling in dermal papilla cells contributes significan

PIEZO2-dependent rapid pain system in humans and mice.

The PIEZO2 ion channel is critical for transducing light touch into neural signals but is not considered necessary for transducing acute pain in humans. Here, we discovered an exception - a form of mechanical pain evoked by hair pulling. Based on observations in a rare group of individuals with PIEZO2 deficiency syndrome, we demonstrated that hair-pull pain is dependent on PIEZO2 transduction. Studies in control participants showed that hair-pull pain triggered a distinct nocifensive response, including a nociceptive reflex. Observations in rare Aβ deafferented individuals and nerve conduction

MC1R mutations modify the classic phenotype of oculocutaneous albinism type 2 (OCA2).

The heterogeneous group of disorders known as oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) shares cutaneous and ocular hypopigmentation associated with common developmental abnormalities of the eye. Mutations of at least 11 loci produce this phenotype. The majority of affected individuals develop some cutaneous melanin; this is predominantly seen as yellow/blond hair, whereas fewer have brown hair. The OCA phenotype is dependent on the constitutional pigmentation background of the family, with more OCA pigmentation found in families with darker constitutional pigmentation, which indicates that other genes ma

Sox2 and JAGGED1 expression in normal and drug-damaged adult mouse inner ear.

Inner ear hair cells detect environmental signals associated with hearing, balance, and body orientation. In humans and other mammals, significant hair cell loss leads to irreversible hearing and balance deficits, whereas hair cell loss in nonmammalian vertebrates is repaired by the spontaneous generation of replacement hair cells. Research in mammalian hair cell regeneration is hampered by the lack of in vivo damage models for the adult mouse inner ear and the paucity of cell-type-specific markers for non-sensory cells within the sensory receptor epithelia. The present study delineates a prot

The psychologic impact of loose anagen syndrome and short anagen syndrome.

Loose anagen syndrome (LAS) and short anagen syndrome (SAS) are congenital hair disorders presenting with reduced hair length with or without hair thinning. We conducted a non-validated online questionnaire of self-identified familial participants in a Facebook support group to assess psychologic symptoms, including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, sadness, insecurity, worry, frustration, and body dysmorphia, in patients and their caregivers. Of 163 total respondents, negative psychologic symptoms were reported in 44.2% (38/89) of LAS patients, 48.3% (43/89) of LAS caregivers, 56.8% (42/7

Use of 5% Topical Minoxidil Application for Telogen Effluvium: An Open-Label Single-Arm Clinical Trial.

Telogen effluvium (TE) is an acute and diffuse hair loss due to an abnormal increase in telogen hair follicles in response to external or internal factors. Recently, TE attracts global interest as a major cause of hair loss as a sequela of COVID-19. Typically, hair shedding in TE is expected to cease around 3-6 months from the onset with spontaneous hair regrowth, once the triggering factor is eliminated. However, the substantial shedding causes heavy psychological stress on patients, and there is no evidence-based treatment. To assess the usefulness of topical minoxidil, which has been report

The effect of placebo in split-scalp and whole-head platelet-rich plasma trials for androgenetic alopecia differs: Findings from a systematic review with quantitative evidence syntheses.

BACKGROUND: Some studies have shown that platelet-rich plasma (PRP) improves androgenetic alopecia (AGA), while others do not. We determined whether the placebo effect significantly varies between split-scalp and whole-head trials on PRP monotherapy for AGA. Our rationale was based on the plausibility of PRP diffusing to the control (i.e., "placebo") side of split-scalp trials. This is not possible in whole-head studies. METHODS: We systematically searched the literature for available data. Our choice of analyses and outcomes were determined by the available data. RESULTS: Our endpoint was c

Finasteride cream in hirsutism.

OBJECTIVE: To determine, in a preliminary study, whether women with hirsutism attributable to various causes would benefit from treatment with finasteride cream. METHODS: Finasteride cream (0.25%) and placebo cream were administered to eight women with various degrees of facial hirsutism. The two creams were used on opposite sides of the face in an area of excessive hair growth. The side chosen for the finasteride cream versus placebo was randomized and blinded. In a 1 cm2 area on each side of the face, hair counts were done every 2 months throughout the 6-month study period. Hair thickness w

Efficacy of tofacitinib in treatment of alopecia universalis in two patients.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune-triggered non-scarring hair loss is a feature of alopecia areata (AA). Initially patchy and often self-limited, severe hair loss forms include the complete loss of scalp hair or alopecia totalis (AT) and complete loss of all hair or alopecia universalis (AU). For AT and AU a reliable treatment has remained elusive. The targeted kinase inhibitor tofacitinib, in current use for treatment of other immune diseases, has been hypothesized as a viable option for AA, AT and AU therapy and a few case reports support this. OBJECTIVE: Our study aims to provide evidence for the eff

Profiling drug-induced cell death pathways in the zebrafish lateral line.

Programmed cell death (PCD) is an important process in development and disease, as it allows the body to rid itself of unwanted or damaged cells. However, PCD pathways can also be activated in otherwise healthy cells. One such case occurs in sensory hair cells of the inner ear following exposure to ototoxic drugs, resulting in hearing loss and/or balance disorders. The intracellular pathways that determine if hair cells die or survive following this or other ototoxic challenges are incompletely understood. We use the larval zebrafish lateral line, an external hair cell-bearing sensory system,
