Lifestyle modifications and pharmacological approaches to improve sexual function and satisfaction in men with spinal cord injury: a narrative review.

STUDY DESIGN: A narrative review describing various components of sexual dysfunction in men with spinal cord injury (SCI), as well as addressing potential therapeutic approaches. OBJECTIVES: Restoration of sexual function is considered one of the most important health priorities for individuals with SCI. The purpose of this review is to provide information regarding the factors that are less appreciated when considering changes to sexual function in men with SCI. We also propose therapeutic approaches, with a focus on lifestyle modifications, which have been shown to improve sexual function.

High Cancer Burden Among Antiretroviral Therapy Users in Malawi: A Record Linkage Study of Observational Human Immunodeficiency Virus Cohorts and Cancer Registry Data.

BACKGROUND: With antiretroviral therapy (ART), AIDS-defining cancer incidence has declined and non-AIDS-defining cancers (NADCs) are now more frequent among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected populations in high-income countries. In sub-Saharan Africa, limited epidemiological data describe cancer burden among ART users. METHODS: We used probabilistic algorithms to link cases from the population-based cancer registry with electronic medical records supporting ART delivery in Malawi's 2 largest HIV cohorts from 2000-2010. Age-adjusted cancer incidence rates (IRs) and 95% confidence int

Perceptions of the "Fabric" - An exploratory study of a novel multi-purpose technology among women in Sub Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: HIV and pregnancy prevention are dual health priorities for women, and particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Drug-eluting fibers offer a dosage form that combines HIV prevention and contraception, but early understanding of end-user perspectives is critical to avoid misalignment between products being developed and preferred product attributes. METHODS: Focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted in South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe, among 55 women who had used vaginal products in previous trials. Participants were given the opportunity to feel a sample of electrospun nanofiber (t

Measles and rubella elimination in the WHO Region for Europe: progress and challenges.

Globally measles remains one of the leading causes of death among young children even though a safe and cost-effective vaccine is available. The World Health Organization (WHO) European Region has seen a decline in measles and rubella cases in recent years. The recent outbreaks have primarily affected adolescents and young adults with no vaccination or an incomplete vaccination history. Eliminating measles and rubella is one of the top immunization priorities of the European Region as outlined in the European Vaccine Action Plan 2015-2020. Following the 2010 decision by the Member States in th

Adaptation of a Couple-Based HIV/STI Prevention Intervention for Latino Men Who Have Sex With Men in New York City.

Predominantly Spanish-speaking Latino men who have sex with men (MSM) and their same-sex partners continue to be at high risk for HIV and STIs. Behavioral research has identified how relationship dynamics for male couples are associated with sexual risk behavior. Connect 'n Unite (CNU), an evidence-based HIV/STI prevention intervention originally created for Black MSM and their same-sex partners, was adapted for predominantly Spanish-speaking Latino MSM and their same-sex partners on the assumption that its key elements would be translatable while its efficacy would be retained. A systematic a

Bronchiectasis in China.

Bronchiectasis is a common but long-neglected disease in China, causing a substantial disease burden both to patients and to society. The overall prevalence of physician-diagnosed bronchiectasis in people aged 40 years or older is estimated at 1.2% and is trending upward with aging of the population. The etiology of bronchiectasis has not been identified heretofore in more than 70% of patients in China, although pneumonia and tuberculosis still appear to be the most common causes of acquired bronchiectasis. Etiologies, comorbidities, and infecting organisms vary greatly across previously publi

State of the Science: Taxane-Induced Musculoskeletal Pain.

BACKGROUND: Cancer survival rates are improving, but this increased survivorship is offset by persistent treatment-related symptoms. Taxane-induced musculoskeletal pain (TIMP) is 1 treatment-related symptom likely undermining cancer survivors' health-related quality of life. OBJECTIVE: The specific aims of this review were to evaluate (1) the conceptual clarity of TIMP, (2) descriptions of the TIMP symptom experience, (3) contextual variables influencing TIMP, and (4) the impact of TIMP on selected outcomes. METHODS: A systematic approach conducted in PubMed yielded 688 articles, and 12 arti

Identifying postpartum intervention approaches to reduce cardiometabolic risk among American Indian women with prior gestational diabetes, Oklahoma, 2012-2013.

INTRODUCTION: Innovative approaches are needed to reduce cardiometabolic risk among American Indian women with a history of gestational diabetes. We assessed beliefs of Oklahoma American Indian women about preventing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease after having gestational diabetes. We also assessed barriers and facilitators to healthy lifestyle changes postpartum and intervention approaches that facilitate participation in a postpartum lifestyle program. METHODS: In partnership with a tribal health system, we conducted a mixed-method study with American Indian women aged 19 to 45

Estimating the social cost of respiratory cancer cases attributable to occupational exposures in France.

PURPOSE: The objective of this article was to estimate the social cost of respiratory cancer cases attributable to occupational risk factors in France in 2010. METHODS: According to the attributable fraction method and based on available epidemiological data from the literature, we estimated the number of respiratory cancer cases due to each identified risk factor. We used the cost-of-illness method with a prevalence-based approach. We took into account the direct and indirect costs. We estimated the cost of production losses due to morbidity (absenteeism and presenteeism) and mortality costs

Pulmonary rehabilitation for patients with bronchiectasis: case reports.

The effectiveness of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) has been recognized in national and international guidelines and highlighted by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence as one of the six key priorities for improving the care of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. PR is likely to be effective in bronchiectasis as it is in COPD. We evaluated the efficacy of PR in the management of bronchiectasis. Three outpatients affected by bronchiectasis, with cough, sputum production, dyspnea, and decreased exercise tolerance, were submitted to five months of PR program consisting

Occupational exposure to chemical substances and time to pregnancy: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Fertility problems are an important health issue, as 10-15% of couples have difficulties conceiving. Reproductive function is thought to be compromised by lifestyle behaviours, but environmental contaminants and work-related factors are also thought to play a role. The objective of this review was to systematically summarize the available evidence concerning the influence of occupational exposure to chemicals on time to pregnancy (TTP). METHODS: A structured search on occupational exposure to chemicals and TTP was carried out in PubMed and Embase. Studies were included if TTP was

Venous thromboembolism in acutely ill hospitalized medical patients.

BACKGROUND: Acute and chronic illness, immobility, and procedural and pharmacologic interventions may predispose patients in the Internal Medicine Wards to venous thromboembolic disease (VTE). The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of VTE in these patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review of cohort of consecutive patients admitted to Internal Medicine wards in Spain between January 1st 2005 and December 31st 2007 was performed. For each patient, demographic data, risk factors for VTE and the diagnosis of VTE during hospitalization was recorded. RESULTS:

Types of infectious outbreaks and their impact in elderly care facilities: a review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: infectious outbreaks in long-term care facilities (LTCFs) tend to have a significant impact on infection rates and mortality rates of the residents. OBJECTIVES: this review aimed to update the information on pathogens identified in such outbreaks and to try to explore indicators that reflect the impact of outbreaks among residents and health care workers (HCWs). METHODS: MEDLINE (1966-2008) was used to identify outbreaks using the following thesaurus terms: 'Cross-Infection', 'Disease Outbreaks', 'Urinary-Tract Infections' and 'Blood-Borne Pathogens'. Elderly care facilities were

Injury-related childhood mortality in migrant households in a southern city of China.

BACKGROUND: Sporadic evidence from China suggests that migrant children are at higher risk of injury-related mortality than local indigenous children. METHODS: Child deaths from 2004 to 2008 were provided by the Shenzhen Women and Child Health Surveillance System. Population data for children 1-4 years old were obtained from the Shenzhen Bureau of Statistics and number of live births was obtained from birth registration records. All-cause and injury-related childhood mortality rates and death causes were calculated and compared. RESULTS: A total of 3774 deaths were identified. All-cause mort

Cancer risk in persons with HIV/AIDS in India: a review and future directions for research.

BACKGROUND: India has a large and evolving HIV epidemic. Little is known about cancer risk in Indian persons with HIV/AIDS (PHA) but risk is thought to be low. METHODS: To describe the state of knowledge about cancer patterns in Indian PHA, we reviewed reports from the international and Indian literature. RESULTS: As elsewhere, non-Hodgkin lymphomas dominate the profile of recognized cancers, with immunoblastic/large cell diffuse lymphoma being the most common type. Hodgkin lymphoma is proportionally increased, perhaps because survival with AIDS is truncated by fatal infections. In contrast,

Elucidating the Contexts That Enable or Constrain Normalization of Guideline-Based LDCT Lung Cancer Screening Processes in U.S. Primary Care.

Routine primary care encounters offer a major opportunity to reach a large population of individuals eligible for lung cancer screening (LCS) in the U.S., potentially representing up to one-third of all primary care visits each year. This article, the first in a two-part integrative review, synthesizes evidence on the contextual factors that enable or constrain the normalization of guideline-based LCS processes in U.S. primary care. Seven electronic databases were searched in February 2025 (updated in December 2025) to identify relevant studies. The findings reported here draw on 146 studies i

Still teaching 1948: the unfinished decolonization of Nigerian medical education.

BACKGROUND: Despite growing global momentum to decolonize health professions education, Nigerian medical education remains underrepresented in mainstream decolonization scholarship. APPROACH: This is a narrative, interpretive perspective informed by selected Nigerian medical education literature and the authors' professional experience, rather than a systematic, scoping, or integrative review. It examines why the visibility gap exists, what it obscures, and traces the field's evolution from its colonial curriculum origin to current reform efforts. KEY ARGUMENTS: We argue that this limited vi

The Patients' Voice in Clostridioides difficile Infection: Large Language Model-Assisted Thematic Analysis of Patient Testimonials.

BACKGROUND: Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) imposes a burden that extends well beyond the gastrointestinal tract, yet existing outcome measures only partially capture the patient experience. We used frontier large language models (LLMs) on patient and caregiver narratives at scale to describe how burden shifts with disease course. METHODS: We analyzed 189 testimonials from the Peggy Lillis Foundation corpus, sorted into 4 cohorts with recurrence (r) and fulminant (f) severity as axes (rfCDI, fCDI, rCDI, non-rfCDI). Two independent LLMs coded 8 thematic domains, 4 fulminant flags, 13

Vascular cognitive impairment in China: Epidemiology, risk factors, healthcare system, management challenges, therapeutic modalities, and prevention strategies.

Vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) is an increasingly important contributor to cognitive decline in China, where rapid population aging intersects with a substantial burden of stroke, cerebral small vessel disease, and cardiometabolic risk. This narrative review synthesizes Chinese epidemiological, clinical, health-services, and policy literature on VCI, supplemented by key international consensus and interventional evidence when directly relevant. Available evidence indicates that the vascular contribution to cognitive disorders in China is substantial but heterogeneously measured because of
