Leptomeningeal carcinomatosis and sensorineural hearing loss: correlation of labyrinthine enhancement patterns with symptoms.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between hearing loss and inner ear enhancement in patients suffering from leptomeningeal carcinomatosis (LC) involving the internal acoustic canal (IAC). Previous studies have only reported an association between IAC enhancement and sensorineural deafness. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a prospective study conducted from 2005 to 2007, 14 patients with LC involving the IAC underwent high-resolution MRI and otolaryngology examination. MRI images were analyzed by two experienced radiologists who were blinded to audiologic investi

Radiological factors related to pre-operative hearing levels in patients with vestibular schwannomas.

The pathogenetic mechanism of hearing loss in patients with vestibular schwannomas (VS) remains unclear. Our aim was to determine the radiological and clinical parameters that might be related to hearing. The radiological images and charts of 99 patients were reviewed. Image processing software was used to analyse the maximal tumor diameter in three planes; its volume; its extension cranially, caudally, anteriorly and posteriorly; the width and length of the intrameatal tumor portion, its shape and consistency; and the tumor-fundus distance. These parameters were correlated with the patient's

Quality of life after vestibular schwannoma surgery: does hearing preservation make a difference?

OBJECTIVE: Surgery for vestibular schwannoma may reduce patients' quality of life, but the effect of hearing preservation on this process is not fully understood. Our aim was to determine whether hearing preservation makes a difference to patients' quality of life in this clinical setting. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective questionnaire and cross-sectional survey. METHODS: The study included 104 consecutive patients who had undergone surgery for vestibular schwannoma between 1998 and 2004. Surgery was via a middle cranial fossa route in 24 patients and a translabyrinthine route in 79. Quality of l

Predictive model for progression of hearing loss: meta-analysis of multi-state outcome.

RATIONALE, AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To develop a multi-state Markov model to predict multi-state progression of age-related hearing loss (ARHL). METHOD: A systematic searching of literature from Medline (1966-2005) was performed. The disease process for hearing loss was modelled as a four-state continuous-time Markov process. We estimated the progression rates for each study separately, then calculated weighted averages over all studies across age groups, weighting for each study by the inverse of variance. The pooled estimates were obtained and transition probabilities between states were illust

Observation of hearing loss in patients with chronic suppurative otitis media tubotympanic type.

BACKGROUND: It is acknowledged that size and site of tympanic membrane perforation is proportional to degree of hearing loss but there are many studies which suggests otherwise. Persistent ear discharge is also supposed to deteriorate hearing level with passage of time. This study is carried out to find out the relation between size and site of tympanic membrane perforation and duration of ear discharge on hearing loss. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to study the effect of size and site of tympanic membrane perforation and duration of ear discharge on hearing loss. METHODS AND MA

Acoustic analysis of voice in cochlear implant recipients with post-meningitic hearing loss.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the critical time period between the onset of sensorineural hearing loss and cochlear implantation with respect to normal voice production in children with post-meningitic hearing loss. Acoustic measures of voice production were obtained from ten paediatric cochlear implant recipients with post-meningitic hearing loss. Acoustic measures were obtained utilising the Multi-Dimensional Voice Program and Computerized Speech Laboratory (Kay Elemetrics Corp.). Measures were based on sustained phonation of the vowel /a/. Acoustic parameters included fundamen

Adding insult to injury: cochlear nerve degeneration after "temporary" noise-induced hearing loss.

Overexposure to intense sound can cause temporary or permanent hearing loss. Postexposure recovery of threshold sensitivity has been assumed to indicate reversal of damage to delicate mechano-sensory and neural structures of the inner ear and no persistent or delayed consequences for auditory function. Here, we show, using cochlear functional assays and confocal imaging of the inner ear in mouse, that acoustic overexposures causing moderate, but completely reversible, threshold elevation leave cochlear sensory cells intact, but cause acute loss of afferent nerve terminals and delayed degenerat

Long-term measurement of binaural intensity matches and pitch matches. I. Normal hearing.

Changes in pitch perception and hearing thresholds over time have been observed in subjects with monaural fluctuating low-frequency hearing loss and Ménière's disease. Long-term suprathreshold audiometry and binaural pitch matches could provide information of these changes. Ten normal subjects were tested for stability of binaural intensity and pitch matches during 9-22 days in their homes with newly developed portable test equipment. Binaural pitch matches were measured using a 0.25- or 1-kHz reference tone presented at 60 dB SPL to one ear, and a loudness-matched test tone of adjustable freq

Study of a Brazilian family presenting non-syndromic hearing loss with mitochondrial inheritance.

We hereby report on the audiological and genetic findings in individuals from a Brazilian family, with the following mitochondrial mutation A1555G in the 12SrRNA gene (MT-RNR-1). Nine individuals underwent speech, audiologic (tonal audiometry and logoaudiometry) and genetic evaluations. Eight individuals among the A1555G carriers were affected by hearing impairment and one person had normal hearing thresholds till the end of the present study. The audiologic evaluation results indicated normal hearing thresholds all the way to bilateral profound hearing loss with post-lingual onset and variabl

Client-based adjustments of hearing aid gain: the effect of different control configurations.

OBJECTIVES: Facilitating the fine-tuning of advanced hearing aids requires information about the acoustic environment. The concept of a "trainable" hearing aid may provide a more direct approach to hearing aid fine-tuning if the aid user is allowed to control the most important fitting parameters in his/her own acoustic environments. DESIGN: In a laboratory study, the concept of self-adjustment of the gain-frequency response was tested by 24 hearing aid users using four different controllers with a limited number of control functions. Research questions focused on the reproducibility of the f

Risk factors of hearing impairment in Indian children: a retrospective case-file study.

A significant proportion of school children are hearing impaired and they suffer from various academic and adjustment problems. Identification of risk factors will help in containing the problems. In this context this study aims to find the causative factors of hearing impairment. Data obtained from 1000 case files indicated that mean age of detection by parents was 3.03 years. A considerable gap between the mean age of detection and availing audiological rehabilitation was observed. Prenatal diseases, exposure to X-rays during gestation, premature delivery, low birth weight, postnatal jaundic

Noggin heterozygous mice: an animal model for congenital conductive hearing loss in humans.

Conductive hearing loss occurs when sound waves are not relayed efficiently to the inner ear. Mutations of the NOGGIN (NOG) gene in humans are associated with several autosomal dominant disorders such as proximal symphalangism and multiple synostoses. These syndromes are characterized by skeletal defects and synostoses, which include conductive hearing loss. Noggin is an antagonist of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), and balanced levels of BMPs and Noggin are required for proper skeletal formation. Depending on the genetic background, some of the Nog(+/-) mice display mild hearing loss, tha

[Difficulties understanding compressed speech in elderly listeners with mild-to-moderate hearing loss].

OBJECTIVE: In this work we evaluated the difficulties in understanding rapid speech (normal, fast and very fast rates) in elderly listeners with and without hearing loss (presbycusis and moderate hearing loss). Rapid speech is common in daily communication, yet few studies have been conducted to assess this problem in Spanish-speaking listeners, as has been done for English speakers. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We compared the recognition of sentences presented at normal, fast, and very fast speech rates in 3 groups of listeners. Recognition scores were correlated to their audiological measures and

Risk factors for distortion product otoacoustic emissions in young men with normal hearing.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possible effects of risk factors on distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) in young adult men with normal hearing. Four hundred thirty-six United States Marine recruit men (mean age = 19.2 years +/- 1.8 years; age range = 17-29 years) participated in this study. Questionnaires were given to each recruit to obtain demographic data and history of noise exposure, solvent exposure, smoking history, and hearing-related histories. Otoscopy, tympanometry, pure-tone air-conduction audiometry (2.0-8.0 kHz) and DPOAEs (2.3-8.0 kHz) were measured.
