BACKGROUND: Few people with chronic moderate-to-severe brain injury are following recommended physical activity guidelines.
OBJECTIVE: Investigate effects of planned, systematic physical activity while cultivating social and emotional well-being of people with chronic moderate-to-severe brain injury.

Endomyocardial biopsy (EMBx) is a useful tool for diagnosing various cardiac pathologies. However, the routine use of EMBx has not gained widespread acceptance due to the possible complications related to the EMBx. Thus, not much information is available on the complications related to the EMBx. We prospectively evaluated 90 consecutive patients who underwent 2-D echocardiography guided transfemoral right ventricular EMBx at Kyungpook National University Hospital between March 2002 and November 2005 to determine the incidence, nature and subsequent management of complications related to EMBx.

We studied by cross-sectional echocardiography 27 consecutive subjects with severe blunt trauma of the chest. Inadequate studies were obtained in 6 subjects (22%). Abnormal, unexpected findings were noted in 6 of the remaining 21 subjects (29%): moderate size pericardial effusion in 3 and focal ventricular dysfunction in 4. No patient with echocardiographic abnormality was suspected clinically of having heart damage. One of the 6 subjects with abnormal echocardiographic findings died from sudden asystole 6 days later. A case of systemic-pulmonary arteriovenous fistula is described. Chest trauma with multiple bone fractures 9 years prior to this admission was the suspected cause. Three years after the trauma, chest X-rays revealed abnormal vessels in the right lung. Eight years after the trauma, the patient developed congestive heart failure. This has been well controlled with digitalis and occasional diuretics.
