Applications of phase-contrast velocimetry sequences in cardiovascular imaging.

AIMS: To describe and illustrate the main applications of phase-contrast flow quantification in cardiovascular imaging. CONCLUSION: Phase-contrast velocimetry sequences provide an accurate, reliable, reproducible and non-invasive study of blood flow, information which is sometimes not available from other investigation methods. The haemodynamic information obtained from these complement MRI angiography images. They appear to have a range of clinical applications, firstly improving pathophysiological understanding but also contributing to the treatment and follow-up strategy after surgical or

Automatic segmentation of intracranial arteries and veins in four-dimensional cerebral CT perfusion scans.

PURPOSE: CT angiography (CTA) scans are the current standard for vascular analysis of patients with cerebrovascular diseases, such as acute stroke and subarachnoid hemorrhage. An additional CT perfusion (CTP) scan is acquired of these patients to assess the perfusion of the cerebral tissue. The aim of this study is to extend the diagnostic yield of the CTP scans to also include vascular information. METHODS: CTP scans are acquired by injecting contrast material and repeatedly scanning the head over time. Therefore, time-intensity profiles are available for each voxel in the scanned volume, re

Analytic noise-propagation in indirect fan-beam FBP reconstruction.

Precise knowledge of the local image noise is an essential ingredient to efficient application of post-processing methods such as wavelet or diffusion filtering to computed tomography (CT) images. The non-stationary, object dependent nature of noise in CT images is a direct result from the noise present in the projection data. Since quantum and electronics noise are the dominating noise sources, comparably simple models can be used for direct noise estimates in the individual projections. In this article, we describe the analytic propagation of these noise estimates through fan-beam filtered b

Isotropic proton-density-weighted high-resolution MRI for volume measurement of reconstructed orbital fractures--a comparison with multislice CT.

OBJECTIVE: The cause of enophthalmos as a late complication after orbital reconstruction is poorly investigated. Multislice CT (MSCT) is usually employed for its assessment, in spite of limitations regarding soft tissue depiction/imaging, as well as the implication of radiation and production of artifacts. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been shown to be a valuable alternative. The aim of this study was to establish a bony and soft tissue orbital volume calculation method based on different high-resolution MRI sequences compared to MSCT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-seven patients were

Deformable registration of brain tumor images via a statistical model of tumor-induced deformation.

An approach to the deformable registration of three-dimensional brain tumor images to a normal brain atlas is presented. The approach involves the integration of three components: a biomechanical model of tumor mass-effect, a statistical approach to estimate the model's parameters, and a deformable image registration method. Statistical properties of the sought deformation map from the atlas to the image of a tumor patient are first obtained through tumor mass-effect simulations on normal brain images. This map is decomposed into the sum of two components in orthogonal subspaces, one represent

Soft tissue differentiation using multiband signatures of high resolution ultrasonic transmission tomography.

In this paper, we are interested in soft tissue differentiation by multiband images obtained from the High-Resolution Ultrasonic Transmission Tomography (HUTT) system using a spectral target detection method based on constrained energy minimization (CEM). We have developed a new tissue differentiation method (called "CEM filter bank") consisting of multiple CEM filters specially designed for detecting multiple types of tissues. Statistical inference on the output of the CEM filter bank is used to make a decision based on the maximum statistical significance rather than the magnitude of each CE

Quantifying dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI of the knee in children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis using an arterial input function (AIF) extracted from popliteal artery enhancement, and the effect of the choice of the AIF on the kinetic parameters.

Quantification of dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI based on pharmacokinetic modeling requires specification of the arterial input function (AIF). A full representation of the plasma concentration data, including the initial rise and decay parts, considering the delay and dispersion of the bolus contrast is important. This work deals with modeling of DCE-MRI data from the knees of children with a history of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) by using an AIF extracted from the signal enhancement data from the nearby popliteal artery. Three models for the AIFs were considered: a triexponentia

New ratios for the detection and classification of CJD in multisequence MRI of the brain.

We present a method for the analysis of deep grey brain nuclei for accurate detection of human spongiform encephalopathy in multisequence MRI of the brain. We employ T1, T2 and FLAIR-T2 MR sequences for the detection of intensity deviations in the internal nuclei. The MR data are registered to a probabilistic atlas and normalised in intensity prior to the segmentation of hyperintensities using a foveal model. Anatomical data from a segmented atlas are employed to refine the registration and remove false positives. The results are robust over the patient data and in accordance to the clinical g

Isosurfaces as deformable models for magnetic resonance angiography.

Vascular disease produces changes in lumenal shape evident in magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). However, quantification of vascular shape from MRA is problematic due to image artifacts. Prior deformable models for vascular surface reconstruction primarily resolve problems of initialization of the surface mesh. However, initialization can be obtained in a trivial manner for MRA using isosurfaces. We propose a methodology for deforming the isosurface to conform to the boundaries of objects in the image with minimal a priori assumptions of object shape. As in conventional methods, external fo

Modified magnetic resonance image based parcellation method for cerebral cortex using successive fuzzy clustering and boundary detection.

Development of the accurate and reproducible parcellation of the human brain can be used to resolve the complex structure-functional relationships in the brain. We propose a modified parcellation method that provides the reliable and reproducible regions of interest using successive fuzzy c-means (sFCM) and boundary-detection algorithm. This method displays simultaneously both original brain image for identifying the sulcal landmarks and its tissue-classified image for referring to patterns of sulci. The whole cerebral region is extracted by the semiautomated region growing method and then cla

Streamlined calculation of kidney function using dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI with population-based arterial input function and a whole-kidney model.

OBJECTIVES: Dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can assess kidney function, but artifacts and complex post-processing limit its use. We calculated estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and renal plasma flow (RPF) by combining a population-based arterial input function (pAIF) with a whole-kidney pharmacokinetic model (WKPM). We also compared DCE-MRI eGFR and RPF with serum eGFR and arterial spin labeling (ASL) derived RPF, respectively. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a prospective single-center study, 43 patients (30 M/13 F, 59.0 ± 11.8 y) with renal masses underw

Super-resolution deep learning-enhanced 2D MRCP improves main pancreatic duct visualization compared with 3D MRCP.

PURPOSE: The relative merits of 2D and 3D MRCP remain incompletely defined, and the effect of super-resolution deep learning reconstruction (SR-DLR) on main pancreatic duct (MPD) visualization remains unclear. We compared image quality and MPD visualization among 3D MRCP with SR-DLR (3D-SR), conventional 2D MRCP with compressed sensing (2D-CS), and 2D MRCP with SR-DLR (2D-SR), and exploratorily assessed diagnostic performance for MPD abnormalities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective study included 174 patients undergoing MRCP for pancreatic evaluation. Quantitative metrics included signa

Impact of a fast free-breathing 3-T abdominal MRI protocol on improving scan time and image quality for pediatric patients with tuberous sclerosis complex.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the abdomen can be especially challenging in pediatric patients because of image quality degradation from respiratory motion. Abdominal MR protocols tailored for free-breathing children can potentially improve diagnostic image quality and reduce scan time. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the performance of a free-breathing 3-T MRI protocol for renal evaluation in pediatric patients with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single institution, Institutional Review Board-approved, retrospective database query identified pediatric TSC
