Effect of Retrieval Practice on Short-Term and Long-Term Retention in HIV+ Individuals.

OBJECTIVES: Episodic memory deficits are both common and impactful among persons infected with HIV; however, we know little about how to improve such deficits in the laboratory or in real life. Retrieval practice, by which retrieval of newly learned material improves subsequent recall more than simple restudy, is a robust memory boosting strategy that is effective in both healthy and clinical populations. In this study, we investigated the benefits of retrieval practice in 52 people living with HIV and 21 seronegatives. METHODS: In a within-subjects design, all participants studied 48 verbal

Overlapping genetic pathways in the skeletal dysplasias of a middle woodland individual: A case study.

Studies of interacting/overlapping genetic skeletal disorders are rare for populations today, but even more so for archaeological contexts. The skeletal remains of an adult female (EZ 3-7-1) were excavated in the 1980s from the Middle Woodland (50BC-AD400) context of the Elizabeth site (11PK512) in the lower Illinois Valley (LIV), USA. Reported here are the standard score (z-score) comparisons of the measured skeletal differences of EZ 3-7-1 with a reference sample and a re-analysis of the individual's pathological changes, with special consideration placed on refining the disease diagnosis. Living with ongoing whiplash associated disorders: a qualitative study of individual perceptions and experiences.

BACKGROUND: Whiplash associated disorders (WAD) are the most common non-hospitalised injury resulting from a motor vehicle crash. Approximately 50% of individuals with WAD experience on-going pain and disability. Results from intervention trials for individuals with chronic WAD are equivocal and optimal treatment continues to be a challenge. It may be that traditional quantitative measures included in treatment trials have not captured the full benefits patients experience through participation in an intervention. The aim of the present study was to explore participant subjective experiences a

Antiepileptic drug monotherapy for epilepsy: a network meta-analysis of individual participant data.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy is a common neurological condition with a worldwide prevalence of around 1%. Approximately 60% to 70% of people with epilepsy will achieve a longer-term remission from seizures, and most achieve that remission shortly after starting antiepileptic drug treatment. Most people with epilepsy are treated with a single antiepileptic drug (monotherapy) and current guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in the United Kingdom for adults and children recommend carbamazepine or lamotrigine as first-line treatment for partial onset seizures and so

Predictive simulation of diabetic gait: Individual contribution of ankle stiffness and muscle weakening.

Diabetic neuropathic individuals present massive muscle strength reduction at the ankle plantar- and dorsiflexors and increased joint stiffness. Our aim is to investigate the adaptation strategies to these musculoskeletal alterations during walking by means of predictive simulations. We used a seven segment planar musculoskeletal model actuated by eight Hill-type muscles in each leg. The effect of all passive tissue in muscles and other joint structures was modeled by net passive joint moment curves. The predictive simulations were generated by solving an optimal control problem that minimized

Spinal kinematics during gait in healthy individuals across different age groups.

Most studies investigating trunk kinematics have not provided adequate quantification of spinal motion, resulting in a limited understanding of the healthy spine's biomechanical behavior during gait. This study aimed at assessing spinal motion during gait in adolescents, adults and older individuals. Fourteen adolescents (10-18years), 13 adults (19-35years) and 15 older individuals (≥65years) were included. Using a previously validated enhanced optical motion capture approach, sagittal and frontal plane spinal curvature angles and general trunk kinematics were measured during shod walking at a

Individuals' explanations for their persistent or recurrent low back pain: a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Most people experience low back pain (LBP), and it is often ongoing or recurrent. Contemporary research knowledge indicates individual's pain beliefs have a strong effect on their pain experience and management. This study's primary aim was to determine the discourses (patterns of thinking) underlying people's beliefs about what causes their LBP to persist. The secondary aim was to investigate what they believed was the source of this thinking. METHODS: We used a primarily qualitative survey design: 130 participants answered questions about what caused their LBP to persist, and wh

Cardiovascular Physiology and Responses to Sexual Activity in Individuals Living with Spinal Cord Injury.

Background: Spinal cord injury (SCI) may profoundly impact autonomic function producing a variable degree of dysfunction in cardiovascular, bronchopulmonary, sweating, bladder, bowel, and sexual function. The cardiovascular system is crucially important for sexual function, as it is responsible for blood flow shifts to cavernous and musculoskeletal tissue during sexual activity. This system is prone to 3 main abnormalities after SCI including low resting blood pressure (LRBP), orthostatic hypotension (OH), and autonomic dysreflexia (AD), all of which have important effects on sexual function.

The tradition algorithm approach underestimates the prevalence of serodiagnosis of syphilis in HIV-infected individuals.

Currently, there are three algorithms for screening of syphilis: traditional algorithm, reverse algorithm and European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) algorithm. To date, there is not a generally recognized diagnostic algorithm. When syphilis meets HIV, the situation is even more complex. To evaluate their screening performance and impact on the seroprevalence of syphilis in HIV-infected individuals, we conducted a cross-sectional study included 865 serum samples from HIV-infected patients in a tertiary hospital. Every sample (one per patient) was tested with toluidine red unh

Speech-Evoked Auditory Brainstem Response in Individuals with Diabetes Mellitus Type 2.

OBJECTIVE: Diabetes is the most common glucose level dependent metabolic disorder and studies have shown that hearing impairment can be a long-term subclinical complication. Studies to investigate auditory system involvement in diabetes has focused majorly on the auditory brainstem response (ABR), otoacoustic emission, and basic audiological measures. Hence in the current study, we used speech-evoked ABR (S-ABR) as a tool to see the effect of diabetes on both a transient and sustained response of the auditory brainstem to a conventionally used consonant-vowel (CV) stimuli /da/. Different Roles of Direct and Indirect Frontoparietal Pathways for Individual Working Memory Capacity.

The ability to temporarily store and manipulate information in working memory is a hallmark of human intelligence and differs considerably across individuals, but the structural brain correlates underlying these differences in working memory capacity (WMC) are only poorly understood. In two separate studies, diffusion MRI data and WMC scores were collected for 70 and 109 healthy individuals. Using a combination of probabilistic tractography and network analysis of the white matter tracts, we examined whether structural brain network properties were predictive of individual WMC. Converging evid
