Visual impairment in very low birthweight children.

AIMS: To compare the visual function of a cohort of very low birthweight (VLBW) children in early adolescence with that of their normal birthweight peers; to correlate visual impairment in this group with available perinatal data; and to examine the relation between the visual ability of VLBW children and their cognitive and motor skills. METHODS: As part of a long term neurodevelopmental study, 137 VLBW children and 163 normal birthweight controls were visually assessed between the ages of 11 and 13 years. Their eyes were examined for strabismus and movement disorders, and the use of visual

No association between influenza vaccination during pregnancy and adverse birth outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women are recommended to receive inactivated influenza vaccination anytime during pregnancy. Studies have investigated the impact of influenza vaccination during pregnancy on birth outcomes and results on preterm birth have been inconsistent. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study among children born at a gestational age≥24weeks from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2015 at Kaiser Permanente Northern California facilities (KPNC). We evaluated the association between maternal influenza vaccination during pregnancy and risk of preterm birth, small and large for g

Nomogram-based prediction model for extubation failure in preterm infants with invasive mechanical ventilation.

BACKGROUND: Achieving early and successful extubation was a critical aspect in the respiratory management of preterm infants. This study aims to identify variables for assessment and establish a predictive model to estimate preterm infants who may experience extubation failure following invasive mechanical ventilation. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 265 very low birth weight infants (VLBWIs) with neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (NRDS) who received invasive mechanical ventilation and intratracheal surfactant administration in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of

Trends in respiratory management of transferred very preterm infants in the last two decades.

BACKGROUND: Among infants needing urgent transfer after birth, very preterm infants are a high-risk sub-group requiring special attention. This study aimed to assess trends in early respiratory management in a large series of very preterm infants undergoing postnatal transfer. METHODS: Trends in patient characteristics and early respiratory management were assessed in 798 very preterm infants who were transferred by the Eastern Veneto Neonatal Emergency Transport Service in 2000-2019. Trends were analyzed using joinpoint regression analysis and summarized as annual percentage changes (APCs).

Growth and fatty acid profiles of VLBW infants receiving a multicomponent lipid emulsion from birth.

OBJECTIVES: Very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants are dependent on parenteral nutrition after birth. A parenteral lipid emulsion with a multicomponent composition may improve growth and neurodevelopment and may prevent liver injury, which is often observed in association with long-term parenteral nutrition with pure soybean oil. Our aim was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a multicomponent lipid emulsion containing 30% soybean oil, 30% medium-chain triacylglycerol, 25% olive oil, and 15% fish oil compared with a conventional pure soybean oil emulsion in VLBW infants. METHODS: We conducte

Enhancing perinatal outcome in homeless women: the challenge of providing comprehensive health care.

Homeless women who are pregnant present a number of challenge to health care providers. As a group, they are at risk for a variety of illnesses that could affect their pregnancies, including sexually transmitted diseases and substance abuse. Poor access to health care, inadequate prenatal care, poor nutrition, and poor housing cause these women to suffer poor birth outcomes. They are more likely to deliver low birth weight infants and have higher rates of infant mortality. It should be understood that homeless pregnant women are a heterogenous group. Generally, they are pregnant adolescents an

Prevalence, Characteristics, and Risk Factors of Retinal Hemorrhage among Full-Term Neonates in Southern China.

Neonatal retinal hemorrhage (RH) is the most common ocular fundus disease among newborns. Early detection and timely intervention are vital for reducing the risk of visual impairment caused by RH. However, little is known about the prevalence, characteristics, and risk factors of RH in southern China. Full-term infants born in Qingyuan City during the first 10 days of each month in 2021 were included in this study. All infants underwent RetCam III retinal examinations. Detailed information on retinal hemorrhage, including involved eyes, bleeding severity, and affected area (extrafoveal macula,

Longitudinal association between maternal cardiovascular health in pregnancy and child birth outcomes.

The American Heart Association has updated its definition of cardiovascular health (CVH) with a new framework known as Life's Essential 8 (LE8). Although gestational CVH assessment has been recommended, its significance based on LE8 for birth outcomes is unknown. We thus evaluated the status of gestational CVH based on LE8 in 3036 pregnant women of the Shanghai Maternal-Child Pairs Cohort and the population of China Maternal Nutrition and Health Sciences Survey, and also examined the association between gestational CVH and child birth outcomes. We found that only a small proportion (12.84%) ha

Randomized controlled trial of enteral vitamin D supplementation (ViDES) in infants <28 weeks gestational age or <1000 g birth weight: study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D is necessary to develop healthy lungs and other organs early in life. Most infants born before 28 weeks' gestation have low vitamin D levels at birth and a limited intake during the first month. Enteral vitamin D supplementation is inexpensive and widely used. The appropriate supplementation regimen for extremely preterm infants is controversial, and the effect of different regimens on their blood levels and outcomes is unclear. METHODS: Randomized, blinded comparative effectiveness trial to compare two vitamin D supplementation regimens for inborn infants <28 weeks gest
