Somatic health care utilization by patients treated for substance use disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with substance use disorder (SUD) are frequently suffering from co-occurring somatic disorders, increasing the risk of mortality. Somatic health care utilization (sHCU) often remains unknown to the physician during SUD treatment. This paper analyses sHCU and associated costs among patients in SUD treatment compared to matched, non-substance dependent controls. METHODS: Health care utilization data on 4972 SUD patients were matched to 19,846 controls by gender, birth year and ethnic origin. Subcategories of patients were formed based on SUD and on co-morbid psychiatric d

BACKGROUND: Women having a termination of pregnancy (TOP) have higher rates of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) than the general population. In this study, we explored CT treatment and prevention in Dutch TOP clinics in comparison to that provided in Great Britain (GB). METHODS: A qualitative study including 14 semi-structured interviews with health care professionals (HCPs) in TOP clinics (the Netherlands: 9, GB: 5). Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analysed by thematic content analysis. RESULTS: Prophylactic treatment with azithromycin is routinely prescribed after surgical TOP, but no

Preventive Health Care for Men Who Have Sex with Men.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) comprise at least 4% of males in the United States. MSM may describe themselves as gay, bisexual, or heterosexual. Because current medical practice does not always facilitate discussion of sexual behaviors, this group of men may face barriers to receiving culturally competent, comprehensive health care, including preventive services. Barriers include a lack of a welcoming clinical environment, lack of adequate health insurance, and sexual minority stress. Health issues that have a disproportionate impact on MSM include mental health and behavioral problems, smok

The contribution of changes in diet, exercise, and stress management to changes in coronary risk in women and men in the multisite cardiac lifestyle intervention program.

BACKGROUND: The relative contribution of health behaviors to coronary risk factors in multicomponent secondary coronary heart disease (CHD) prevention programs is largely unknown. PURPOSE: Our purpose is to evaluate the additive and interactive effects of 3-month changes in health behaviors (dietary fat intake, exercise, and stress management) on 3-month changes in coronary risk and psychosocial factors among 869 nonsmoking CHD patients (34% female) enrolled in the health insurance-based Multisite Cardiac Lifestyle Intervention Program. METHODS: Analyses of variance for repeated measures wer

Trends and disparities in health status and health care in the United States during COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Concerns exist over a possible worsening of disparities in health status and health care access across racial/ethnic and income groups during the COVID-19 pandemic. We aimed to characterize trends in racial/ethnic and income differences in self-reported measures of health status and health care access among US adults. METHODS: This serial cross-sectional nationally representative study included adults (age ≥ 18 years) participating in the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) from 2019 to 2022. Self-reported health status (poor or fair health status, functional limitation, clini

Determinants of health poverty vulnerability of rural households in Jiangxi Province, China: an analysis based on risk theory.

BACKGROUND: Although China has made significant progress on poverty alleviation over the past decade, health-related poverty remains an urgent issue in the rural areas of less developed regions, such as central and western China. On the basis of risk theory, this study investigated the determinants of health poverty vulnerability of rural households lifted out of poverty in central China. METHODS: First-hand survey data collected from a convenience sample of 255 previously impoverished households in rural areas of Jiangxi Province in central China in 2024 were used in this study. In this stud

However, there is a gap in knowledge about cancer screening health literacy in the Black WLH population. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the level of cancer screening health literacy, and to identify factors associated with health literacy among Black WLH. METHODS: This study used baseline data from a community-based randomized controlled trial for a health literacy intervention called CHECC-uP (communit

Alcohol consumption and the risk of new-onset uterine leiomyomas: a nationwide population-based study in 2.5 million Korean women aged 20 to 39 years.

BACKGROUND: Uterine leiomyomas are the most common benign tumors in women of childbearing age. Although there are several studies reporting the positive association of drinking alcohol with the incidence of uterine leiomyomas, studies targeting Korean women are lacking. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the association between alcohol consumption and the risk of new-onset uterine leiomyomas in Korean women of early reproductive-age. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective nationwide population-based cohort study using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. Participant

Association Between Preschool Physical Activity and Health Care Use and Burden in Children With Congenital Heart Disease.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity is essential for reducing cardiovascular risk in children with congenital heart disease (CHD). However, evidence of this association in early childhood remains limited. METHODS: We analyzed data from 44 349 children born between 2014 and 2016 who were diagnosed with CHD and enrolled in the National Health Insurance Service database. 2025 Taiwan consensus recommendations for primary care of chronic kidney disease.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major public health challenge in Taiwan, projected to affect over three million people by 2027. Despite national Pay-for-Performance programs, gaps in early detection and risk control call for practical, standardized primary care strategies. To address this, a core group of experts systematically reviewed international and local CKD guidelines and relevant literature, with emphasis on applicability to Taiwan's health system and frontline practice, and drafted preliminary recommendations. A multidisciplinary panel comprising representatives from nephrology, end

An epidemiological investigation of the prevalence of digestive diseases in the older prisoner population in Taiwan.

OBJECTIVE: The prison population has been increasing globally, and prisoner health is an important issue of global health. However, it has not received sufficient attention, especially in developing countries and regions. Among all the prisoners, the health status of older prisoners requires special attention due to their declining health and energy. This study aims to assess the prevalence of digestive diseases among older prisoners in Taiwan. METHODS: Data on older prisoners from the National Health Insurance Research Database from January 1 to December 31, 2013, were used in this study. Di

Rate and setting of neurodevelopmental and psychosocial encounters for children with CHD.

BACKGROUND: In North America, less than 30% of children with complex CHD receive recommended follow-up for neurodevelopmental and psychosocial care. While rates of follow-up care at surgical centres have been described, little is known about similar services outside of surgical centres. METHODS: This cohort study used Maine Health Data Organization's All Payer Claims Data from 2015 to 2019 to identify developmental and psychosocial-related encounters received by children 0-18 years of age with complex CHD. Encounters were classified as developmental, psychological, and neuropsychological test
