Biochemical and full genome sequence analyses of clinical Vibrio cholerae isolates in Mexico reveals the presence of novel V. cholerae strains.

The first week of September 2013, the National Epidemiological Surveillance System identified two cases of cholera in Mexico City. The cultures of both samples were confirmed as Vibrio cholerae serogroup O1, serotype Ogawa, biotype El Tor. Initial analyses by PFGE and by PCR-amplification of the virulence genes, suggested that both strains were similar, but different from those previously reported in Mexico. The following week, four more cases were identified in a community in the state of Hidalgo, located 121 km northeast of Mexico City. Thereafter a cholera outbreak started in the region of

Expression of O(6)-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase causes lomustine resistance in canine lymphoma cells.

The DNA repair protein O (6)-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) causes resistance to nitrosoureas in various human cancers. In this study, we analyzed the correlation between canine lymphomas and MGMT in vitro. Two of five canine lymphoma cell lines required higher concentrations of lomustine to inhibit cell growth by 50%, but their sensitivity to the drug increased when they were cultured with an MGMT inhibitor. Fluorometric oligonucleotide assay and real-time polymerase chain reaction of these cell lines revealed MGMT activity and high MGMT mRNA expression, respectively. We analyzed

Will Culling White-Tailed Deer Prevent Lyme Disease?

White-tailed deer play an important role in the ecology of Lyme disease. In the United States, where the incidence and geographic range of Lyme disease continue to increase, reduction of white-tailed deer populations has been proposed as a means of preventing human illness. The effectiveness of this politically sensitive prevention method is poorly understood. We summarize and evaluate available evidence regarding the effect of deer reduction on vector tick abundance and human disease incidence. Elimination of deer from islands and other isolated settings can have a substantial impact on the r

Areca nut and its role in oral submucous fibrosis.

Areca nut, commonly called as betel nut or supari, is a fruit of areca catechu palm tree, which is native of South Asia and Pacific Islands. The seed or endosperm is consumed fresh, boiled or after sun drying or curing. Chewing areca nut is thought to have central nervous system stimulating effect and along with this it is known to have salivary stimulating and digestive properties. According to the traditional Ayurvedic medicine, chewing areca nut and betel leaf is a good remedy against halitosis. It is also used for its deworming property. Along with these beneficial effects of areca nut one

Central role of the Na(+)-translocating NADH:quinone oxidoreductase (Na(+)-NQR) in sodium bioenergetics of Vibrio cholerae.

Vibrio cholerae is a Gram-negative bacterium that lives in brackish or sea water environments. Strains of V. cholerae carrying the pathogenicity islands infect the human gut and cause the fatal disease cholera. Vibrio cholerae maintains a Na(+) gradient at its cytoplasmic membrane that drives substrate uptake, motility, and efflux of antibiotics. Here, we summarize the major Na(+)-dependent transport processes and describe the central role of the Na(+)-translocating NADH:quinone oxidoreductase (Na(+)-NQR), a primary Na(+) pump, in maintaining a Na(+)-motive force. The Na(+)-NQR is a membrane p

Reptiles.

Most small children can tell you that 'reptiles' are the snakes, lizards, crocodiles, and turtles (perhaps with the dinosaurs thrown in) - suggesting that it's easy to tell the difference between reptiles and other animals. Unfortunately, evolutionary biologists struggle with the same task, because phylogenetic analysis tells us loud and clear that these different types of what we loosely call 'reptiles' are not particularly closely related to each other (Figure 1). On the evolutionary tree, some of them (dinosaurs, crocodiles) are much more closely related to birds than to the other animals t

Molecular genetics of achromatopsia in Newfoundland reveal genetic heterogeneity, founder effects and the first cases of Jalili syndrome in North America.

Achromatopsia (ACHM) is a severe retinal disorder characterized by an inability to distinguish colors, impaired visual acuity, photophobia and nystagmus. This rare autosomal recessive disorder of the cone photoreceptors is best known for its increased frequency due to founder effect in the Pingelapese population of the Pacific islands. Sixteen patients from Newfoundland, Canada were sequenced for mutations in the four known achromatopsia genes CNGA3, CNGB3, GNAT2, and PDE6C. The majority (n = 12) of patients were either homozygotes or compound heterozygotes for known achromatopsia alleles, two

Surgical management of the esogastric junction adenocarcinoma according to its histological types.

Most adenocarcinomas of the esophagus occur in the area of the cardia and originate in islands of gastrointestinal mucosa, less often in the submucosal glands, and are usually histologically similar to gastric adenocarcinoma and its various histological patterns. Most tumors are well differentiated. All patients included in this study were diagnosed with adenocarcinoma of the esogastric junction through prior endoscopy and histopathological examination of the biopsies. Patients with resectable tumors underwent surgical resection followed by histopathological examination of the resected samples

Ossifying chondrolipoma of the tongue.

INTRODUCTION: Chondrolipomas and osteolipomas are uncommon variants of lipomatous tumors. CASE REPORT: We presented a 60-year-old woman with ossifying chondrolipoma of the tongue. Clinical examination revealed a firm nodular mass, located in the midline of the posterior region on the dorsal surface of the tongue. Histologically, the lesion was well-delimited showing areas of mature adipocytes arranged in lobules and separated by fibrous connective tissue septa, islands of mature cartilaginous tissue and osseous metaplasia. Trabeculae of lamellar bone within a fibro-fatty background were visib

Thymic hyperplasia with lymphoepithelial sialadenitis (LESA)-like features: a clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical study of 4 cases.

Four cases of an unusual type of thymic hyperplasia strongly resembling lymphoepithelial sialadenitis (LESA) of the salivary glands are described. The patients were 2 men and 2 women aged 37 to 53 years. On histologic examination, abundant lymphoid tissue with lymphoid follicles containing germinal centers and areas of plasma cell infiltration were seen. The epithelial component consisted of a proliferation of Hassall corpuscles and islands of thymic epithelial cells. Cystic changes and lymphoepithelial lesions were identified in all cases, but a monocytoid B-cell population was absent. On imm

Collagenous gastritis.

In the present paper, we report a case of rare collagenous gastritis. The patient was a 25-year-old man who had experienced nausea, abdominal distention and epigastralgia since 2005. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) carried out at initial examination by the patient's local doctor revealed an extensively discolored depression from the upper gastric body to the lower gastric body, mainly including the greater curvature, accompanied by residual mucosa with multiple islands and nodularity with a cobblestone appearance. Initial biopsies sampled from the nodules and accompanying atrophic mucosa were

A novel homozygous mutation in SUCLA2 gene identified by exome sequencing.

Mitochondrial disorders with multiple mitochondrial respiratory chain (MRC) enzyme deficiency and depletion of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) are autosomal recessive conditions due to mutations in several nuclear genes necessary for proper mtDNA maintenance. In this report, we describe two Italian siblings presenting with encephalomyopathy and mtDNA depletion in muscle. By whole exome-sequencing and prioritization of candidate genes, we identified a novel homozygous missense mutation in the SUCLA2 gene in a highly conserved aminoacid residue. Although a recurrent mutation in the SUCLA2 gene is rela

Helicobacter pylori-associated gastroenterological diseases: genetic features and probiotic treatment.

This article presents the results of original research conducted in St. Petersburg, Russia, which showed that the Helicobacter pylori strains isolated from patients with duodenal ulcer and chronic gastroduodenitis possess significantly higher levels of the pathogenicity islands (cag-PAI) genes than the strains isolated from healthy volunteers. The most frequently detected cag-PAI genes were cagA and cagH in the strains isolated from patients with chronic gastroduodenitis, and cagA and cagE in the strains isolated from patients with duodenal ulcer. A comparison of the clinical strains isolated

Influence of strong monsoon winds on the water quality around a marine cage-culture zone in a shallow and semi-enclosed bay in Taiwan.

Influences of marine cage culture and monsoonal disturbances, northeasterly (NE) and southwesterly (SW) monsoons on the proximal marine environment were investigated across a gradient of sites in a semi-enclosed bay, Magong Bay (Penghu Islands, Taiwan). Elevated levels of ammonia produced by the cages were the main pollutant and distinguished the cage-culture and intermediary zones (1000 m away from the cages) from the reference zone in the NE monsoon, indicating currents produced by the strong monsoon may have extended the spread of nutrient-enriched waters without necessarily flushing such e

Cystic sebaceous lymphadenoma of the parotid gland: case report and review of the literature.

Sebaceous lymphadenoma (SL) of the salivary glands is a very rare, benign tumour with distinct histopathologic characteristics and uncertain histogenesis. It is almost exclusively confined to the parotid gland where it occurs generally as a slowly growing mass in elderly patients. Several imaging techniques and fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) can be used for diagnosis, but definitive diagnosis is usually established only by histopathological examination. Such lesions are composed of a varying admixture of islands, duct-like structures and cysts covered with squamous or cuboid and column

Streptococcus suis, an Emerging Drug-Resistant Animal and Human Pathogen.

Streptococcus suis, a major porcine pathogen, has been receiving growing attention not only for its role in severe and increasingly reported infections in humans, but also for its involvement in drug resistance. Recent studies and the analysis of sequenced genomes have been providing important insights into the S. suis resistome, and have resulted in the identification of resistance determinants for tetracyclines, macrolides, aminoglycosides, chloramphenicol, antifolate drugs, streptothricin, and cadmium salts. Resistance gene-carrying genetic elements described so far include integrative and

Yaws in the Western pacific region: a review of the literature.

Until the middle of the 20th century, yaws was highly endemic and considered a serious public health problem in the Western Pacific Region (WPR), leading to intensive control efforts in the 1950s-1960s. Since then, little attention has been paid to its reemergence. Its current burden is unknown. This paper presents the results of an extensive literature review, focusing on yaws in the South Pacific. Available records suggest that the region remains largely free of yaws except for Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu. Many clinical cases reported recently were described as "attenuated

[Research progress of Rett syndrome causing gene MECP2--the structure, function and modulation of MECP2].

Rett syndrome (RTT), an X-linked dominant neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by regression of language, stereotype hand movement and loss of purposeful hand use, is primarily caused by mutation of menthyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MECP2). The 76 kb human MECP2 is characterized by three salient features: a very large intron 2 (60 kb), an 8.5 kb 3'-UTR with highly conserved regions and different polyadenylation sites, and a 40 kb intergenic region separating MECP2 from the nearest upstream gene. There are two isoforms of MeCP2, MeCP2e1 and MeCP2e2. The differences between the two isoforms, t

Cytogenetic evidence of metastatic myxoid liposarcoma and therapy-related myelodysplastic syndrome in a bone marrow biopsy.

Myxoid liposarcoma exhibits a peculiar clinical behavior, with a tendency to spread to serosal membranes, distant soft tissues, and bones, even in the absence of lung metastases. Therapy-related hematological neoplasms are well-known side effects of cytotoxic chemotherapy. We describe an exceptional case of metastatic myxoid liposarcoma of the spine associated with therapy-related refractory anemia with excess of blasts in a 37-year-old woman who underwent multi-agent chemotherapy for a myxoid liposarcoma of the left thigh. Microscopic examination of the bone marrow biopsy revealed dysplastic

HIV type 1 in Fiji is caused by subtypes C and B.

The HIV epidemic in Fiji remains largely uncharacterized. By February 2009, there were 294 confirmed cases; the majority occurred among the 20- to 39-year old age group and resulted from heterosexual contact. There are currently no published data concerning HIV subtypes in Fiji. In this study, venous blood samples were collected as dried blood spots from 35 HIV-positive individuals in Fiji. HIV-1 subtype was determined for 27 (77%) samples and the presence of four different subtypes, with multiple introductions of two, was demonstrated. Subtype distribution was as follows: 16 (59%) were subtyp
