Involvement of episodic memory in language comprehension: Naturalistic comprehension pushes unrelated words closer in semantic space for at least 12 h.

Recent experience with a word significantly influences its subsequent interpretation. For instance, encountering bank in a river-related context biases future interpretations toward 'side of a river' (vs. 'financial bank'). To explain this effect, the episodic context account posits that episodic memory helps bind word meanings in the language input, creating a temporary, context-specific representation that can bias subsequent lexical interpretation. This account predicts that even unrelated words would be linked together in episodic memory, potentially altering their interpretation. In Exper

Can large language models provide accurate and empathetic answers to the most frequently asked questions by infertile patients? A pilot study.

RESEARCH QUESTION: Is the quality, relevance and empathy of the answers provided by large language models (LLMs) in response to the most frequently asked patient questions in reproductive medicine comparable to those provided by human specialists? DESIGN: This monocentric, double blind, prospective study involved two clinicians and two embryologists who answered 13 frequently asked questions in their respective field. The same questions were asked to a free online LLM, with the same constraint of text length as practitioners. All answers were blindly evaluated by four assessors (two gynaecolo

Verbal Memory Localized in Non-language-dominant Hemisphere: Atypical Lateralization Revealed by Material-specific Memory Evaluation Using Super-selective Wada Test.

Hippocampectomy is effective for drug-resistant mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis. However, multiple studies have reported high risks associated with hippocampectomy in patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy without hippocampal sclerosis on magnetic resonance imaging and in those with preserved memory function. Verbal memory and language functions are believed to coexist in the same hemisphere. We present a case of left mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with atypical memory function lateralization revealed by super-selective infusion of propofol to the intracranial arte

Project ImPACT Reduces Social Hyporesponsiveness and Translates to More Optimal Expressive Language Outcomes in Some Infants at Increased Likelihood of Autism.

Low responsiveness to sensory stimuli, particularly stimuli that are social in nature (i.e., social hyporesponsiveness), predicts expressive language in autistic children and in infant siblings of autistic children (Sibs-autism), who are at high likelihood for a future diagnosis of autism and developmental language disorder. However, our understanding of whether social hyporesponsiveness can be addressed via early intervention to improve expressive language outcomes of Sibs-autism is limited. This randomized controlled trial investigated whether Project ImPACT, a caregiver-implemented Naturali

Should Parents Only Use One Language with Their Autistic Children? The Relations Between Multilingualism, Children's Social Skills, and Parent-Child Communication.

PURPOSE: Parents of autistic children are often advised to use only one language to simplify their child's language acquisition. Often this recommendation orients towards the geographically predominant language, which may cause difficulties especially for minority-language families. On the other hand, scientific evidence suggests that multilingualism does not hinder language acquisition and that communicating in exclusively foreign languages may even impede social interaction. Therefore, we investigated how parent language use is linked to the social skills of 68 autistic children and to their

Early motor, cognitive, language, behavioural and social emotional development in infants and young boys with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy- A systematic review.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked recessive disorder caused by mutations in the dystrophin gene. Deficiency of the dystrophin protein causes not only motor, but also cognitive, language, behavioural and social emotional problems. This is the first systematic review investigating five early developmental domains in boys with DMD between 0 and 6 years old. Interactions between different domains and links with mutation types and sites were explored. A systematic search was performed in PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus. An adapted version of the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines

A comparative study of large language model-based zero-shot inference and task-specific supervised classification of breast cancer pathology reports.

OBJECTIVE: Although supervised machine learning is popular for information extraction from clinical notes, creating large annotated datasets requires extensive domain expertise and is time-consuming. Meanwhile, large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated promising transfer learning capability. In this study, we explored whether recent LLMs could reduce the need for large-scale data annotations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We curated a dataset of 769 breast cancer pathology reports, manually labeled with 12 categories, to compare zero-shot classification capability of the following LLMs: GPT-4,

Interpretation services used for non-English language speaking patients with head and neck cancer: Findings from a tertiary London cancer centre.

BACKGROUND: Treatment for head and neck cancer (HNC) can lead to profound changes in swallowing function and nutrition. UK HNC standards recommend informational counselling is provided pre-treatment by the dietitian and speech and language therapist (SLT). Non-english speaking patients treated in English speaking countries have poorer treatment outcomes. UK guidance recommends all patients should have access to interpretation services where required. This audit aimed to investigate the language needs and utilisation of interpretation services for patients with HNC attending pre-treatment clini

Analyzing language ability in first-episode psychosis and their unaffected siblings: A diffusion tensor imaging tract-based spatial statistics analysis study.

Schizophrenia (SZ) is a highly heritable mental disorder, and language dysfunctions play a crucial role in diagnosing it. Although language-related symptoms such as disorganized speech were predicted by the polygenic risk for SZ which emphasized the common genetic liability for the disease, few studies investigated possible white matter integrity abnormalities in the language-related tracts in those at familial high-risk for SZ. Also, their results are not consistent. In this current study, we examined possible aberrations in language-related white matter tracts in patients with first-episode

Algorithmic Identification of Treatment-Emergent Adverse Events From Clinical Notes Using Large Language Models: A Pilot Study in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Outpatient clinical notes are a rich source of information regarding drug safety. However, data in these notes are currently underutilized for pharmacovigilance due to methodological limitations in text mining. Large language models (LLMs) like Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) have shown progress in a range of natural language processing tasks but have not yet been evaluated on adverse event (AE) detection. We adapted a new clinical LLM, University of California - San Francisco (UCSF)-BERT, to identify serious AEs (SAEs) occurring after treatment with a non-steroi
