We report a 45-year-old man with granulocytic sarcoma who, following anticancer chemotherapy, developed florid strongyloidiasis, wherein eggs of Strongyloides stercoralis embedded in the exfoliated mucosa were seen in the stools. The eggs were interspersed with numerous rhabditiform larvae. He was treated with albendazole.

Recognition of the characteristic cutaneous eruption of disseminated strongyloidiasis can be crucial for early diagnosis and treatment of this potentially fatal infestation. We describe a corticosteroid-dependent elderly man who had a purpuric eruption. Filariform larvae of Strongyloides stercoralis were found in dermal granulomas and also in the sputum.

A 38-year-old man presented with severe loss of weight, diarrhoea alternating with constipation and blood in the stool. Clinically, colonic malignancy was suspected, but this was not confirmed. Fresh stool contained numerous larvae of Strongyloides stercoralis. The patient responded promptly to levamisole, with cessation of symptoms and rapid weight gain.

This study presents the first detailed histological description of wing primordium development in Mecoptera and demonstrates a late-forming, non-invaginated developmental mode lacking a morphologically distinct peripodial epithelium. Wing primordium development in holometabolous insects follows two major modes, early-forming and late-forming. Late-forming primordia are epidermal cell populations that remain integrated within the larval epithelium, contribute to cuticle production during each larval molt, and begin morphogenesis only in the final instar. The order Mecoptera remains among the le

Vibrio pectenicida is a marine Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, rod-shaped bacterium that exists in coastal waters. First described in 1998, these bacteria are associated with deadly disease outbreaks including sea star wasting disease (SSWD) and high mortality in larval scallops in hatcheries. Multiple strain types exist, and V. pectenicida A365 is associated with mortality in scallop larvae due to vibrio haemocyte-killer toxin. V. pectenicida strain FHCF-3 is associated with SSWD which causes sea stars to 'melt' to death. Current research efforts focus on isolating potential new strai

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) are effective biocontrol agents against soil-borne insect pests, yet the risks they pose to beneficial insects are understudied, particularly when applied outside soil environments. With growing interest in above-ground applications of EPNs such as on crop foliage or against pests of the western honey bee (Apis mellifera) in hives, it is essential to evaluate their effects on honey bees. We conducted a large-scale assessment of honey bee brood and adult worker susceptibility to Australian EPN isolates ex situ and in situ. At 25 °C, filter paper bioassays showe

The zebrafish (Danio rerio) has become an essential model in fields such as developmental biology, toxicology, genetics, and regenerative medicine due to its low cost, small size, transparent embryos, and genetic similarity to humans. Nowadays, this model is increasingly recognized as a valuable tool in other fields, including veterinary medicine and animal production research, particularly aquaculture, due to its unique characteristics that make it suitable for studying economically significant diseases affecting production species. However, unlike established models such as mice, zebrafish l

The growing demand for sustainable agricultural pest control solutions has increased the use of microbial bioinput. This study characterized an industrial bioinput produced by Saccharopolyspora spinosa, focusing on identifying metabolites and quantifying spinosyns A and D by HPLC-MS. The concentrations of these compounds were 29.4 ± 3.6 mg L-1 and 13.3 ± 1.5 mg L-1, respectively, for a total of 42.7 mg L-1. The limit of quantification (LOQ) and limit of detection (LOD) values obtained were 13.7 ng L-1 and 4.16 ng L-1 for spinosyn A and 7.63 ng L-1 and 2.31 ng L-1 for spinosyn D, respectively.

Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) injury to soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) may result in yield loss. To minimize loss, economic thresholds are used to make treatment decisions. However, many of these thresholds are based on studies using determinate soybean varieties, and it remains unclear whether indeterminate varieties have a greater capacity to compensate for H. zea herbivory compared to determinate ones. For this reason, we investigated whether soybean varieties with different growth habits vary in their ability to compensate for H. zea feeding injury in double-crop syst

The vertebral column of anurans exhibits morphological diversity that is often used in phylogenetic studies. The family Ranidae is one of the ecologically most successful groups of anurans, with the genus Rana being distributed broadly in Eurasia. However, there are relatively sparse detailed studies on the development of the vertebral column in Rana species, and images of the entire axial skeleton have seldom been illustrated till date. Here, we provide an illustrated description on the development of the entire vertebral column in Rana kobai, a Japanese small frog from the Amami Islands. Our

Biomphalaria spp. snails are freshwater gastropods that responsible for Schistosoma mansoni transmission. Schistosomiasis is a chronic illness that occurred in underdeveloped regions with poor sanitation. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the molluscicidal activity of benzylamine against B. alexandrina snails and it larvicidal effects on the free larval stages of S. mansoni. Results showed that benzylamine has molluscicidal activity against adult B. alexandrina snails after 24 h of exposure with median lethal concentration (LC50) 85.7 mg/L. The present results indicated the exposure

The three larval instars of Japanolaccophilus niponensis (Kamiya, 1939) (Coleoptera: Adephaga, Laccophilinae) are described for the first time according to the now genevralized larval descriptive format of Dytiscidae (Coleoptera: Adephaga), which incorporates detailed chaetotaxic and morphometric analyses. A parsimony analysis based on larval characteristics of 14 Laccophilini species in seven genera was conducted using the program TNT. One of the main results is that Japanolaccophilus Satô, 1972, which so far was treated as being related to Neptosternus Sharp, 1882 now stands out as sister to

Extreme heat events and emerging infectious diseases negatively impact wildlife populations, but the interacting effects of infection and host heat tolerance remain understudied. The few studies covering this subject have demonstrated that pathogens lower the heat tolerance of their hosts, which places infected hosts at a greater risk experiencing lethal heat stress. Here, we studied how ranavirus infection influenced heat tolerance in larval wood frogs (Lithobates sylvaticus). In line with similar studies, we predicted the elevated costs of ranavirus infection would lower heat tolerance, meas

The herbicides not only produce a lethal effect on herbs but also indirectly harm those species which use herbs as host plants during their life cycle. The adverse effect of herbicide is comparatively more than any insecticide found in the agricultural industry. Herbicides act as enzyme inhibitors that block the synthesis of essential biomolecules in herbs. Action mechanisms in which herbicides act on the plant body as well as the classification of the herbicides according to their mode of action have been recorded. Lethal effects of herbicides cause qualitative and quantitative losses of herb

Lucilia cuprina is a vector of important diseases in humans and animals that causes myiasis in sheep, leading to enormous damage to the sheep sector. Chemical products are used to control these flies; however, there are reports of resistance in addition to these products causing toxicity to the environment, humans, and animals, so alternative controls have been studied to reduce these impacts. Pleurotus spp. are basidiomycete fungi and present bioactive compounds with medicinal properties. Due to the potential use of fungi to control Diptera, this study aimed to verify the activity of Pleurotu

The in vitro life cycle of zoonotic helminths is an essential tool for -omic translational studies focused on disease control and treatment. Anisakiosis is an emerging zoonosis contracted by the ingestion of raw or undercooked fish infected with the third stage larvae (L3) of two sibling species Anisakis simplex sensu stricto (s.s.) and Anisakis pegreffii, the latter being the predominant species in the Mediterranean basin. Recently, in vitro culture of A. pegreffii has been developed to enable fast and large-scale production of fertile adults. However, the conditions for larval development fr

Oxygen is an important and often limiting reagent of a firefly's bioluminescent chemical reaction. Therefore, the development of the tracheal system and its subsequent modification to support the function of firefly light organs are key to understanding this process. We employ micro-CT scanning, 3D rendering, and confocal microscopy to assess the abdominal tracheal system in Photinus pyralis from the external spiracles to the light organ's internal tracheal brush, a feature named here for the first time. The abdominal spiracles in firefly larvae and pupae are of the biforous type, with a filte

BACKGROUND: The general principle of using microbes from one species to manage a different pest species has a clear precedent in the large-scale release of mosquitoes carrying a Wolbachia bacterium derived from Drosophila flies. New technologies will facilitate the discovery of microbes that can be used in a similar way. Previously, we found three novel partiti-like viruses in the African armyworm (Spodoptera exempta). To investigate further the utility and consistency of host shift of insect viruses as a potential pest management tool, we tested the interaction between the partiti-like viruse
