The comparative study of the content of different lymphocyte populations of the peripheral blood in pathological states accompanied by lesions of the mucous membrane of the large intestine has been made. Thirty patients hospitalized for induction chemotherapy of acute leukemia were studied for incidence, severity, and clinical features of oral herpes simplex virus infections. In 50% of the patients with evidence of past herpes infection, recurrent oral herpes developed during the study. Herpes simplex virus was the major cause of oral mucosal lesions seen in patients with leukemia. A majority of the episodes involved multiple oral sites and caused large atypical lesions. All lesions healed after topical or intravenous acyclovir therapy. Herpes simplex infection should be ruled out in all cases

We describe a patient with neutropenia associated with increased circulating large granular lymphocytes (LGL). In an attempt to characterize the prognostic significance of the main initial clinical, haematological and biochemical features of chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia according to the FAB criteria, 29 such patients were analysed by means of univariate and multivariate statistical methods. In 20 patients with chronic neutropenia, serum lactoferrin (S-LF) and serum myeloperoxidase (S-MPO) levels were assessed. In the summer of 1982, we experienced a great number of patients with Japanese encephalitis compared with the previous years. We have studied 85 adult cases of Japanese encephalitis which were diagnosed clinically and/or serologically. A difference between improved and expired cases was also investigated. We found that deteriorated mental state, elevated SGOT (AST) level, lower hemagglutination-inhibition(H-I) titer, and a more acute onset of the illness were associated with higher mortality. The mortality rate in our cases was 35.3 percent.

In fifty newborn babies, gastric aspirate fluids obtained during the one-hour post partum period were examined from the stand point of PML and cultures. A susceptibility to infections (especially lung infections and sepsis) were established in 8 (30.8%) out of 26 cases with EMR more than twelve hours. PML counts of these cases were 13 and more than 13 per high power field. Significant differences were found between the babies with and without EMR, from the point-of-view of PML count in gastric aspirate fluid and the increased incidence of infections (p less than 0.05).

The aetiology of spasmodic torticollis is unknown but the patients form a heterogeneous group among which are cases apparently precipitated by a viral illness and others associated with autoimmune disease. We therefore decided to investigate the immunoregulatory lymphocyte subsets in our 11 cases. A significant decrease of both helper and suppressor lymphocytes was identified in the group, together with in vitro evidence of depressed suppressor cell function. Disturbance of the immune response may play a role in this puzzling disorder.

Peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets were analyzed in nine patients with ataxia-telangiectasia (AT) and their immediate family members. Absolute lymphocyte numbers were slightly low. T-helper/inducer cell, as well as B-cell, percentages were comparable to normal in patients with AT. The percentage of T-suppressor/cytotoxic cells was decreased in five of nine patients. The percentage of large granular lymphocytes was elevated in three patients. No generalities consistent with a disease hypothesis could be made on the basis of lymphocyte subpopulation data.
