Omega-3 fatty acids for bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder is a complex psychiatric disorder and is amongst the top thirty causes of worldwide disability. Mood stabilisers are the primary pharmacological intervention, both in the treatment of acute episodes and in prophylaxis. There is, however, mounting evidence that dietary supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids may be beneficial in psychiatric conditions, particularly those involving disturbances of mood. OBJECTIVES: To review the efficacy of omega-3 fatty acids as either a monotherapy or an adjunctive treatment for bipolar disorder. SEARCH STRATEGY: Electronic sear

Distinguishing bipolar major depression from unipolar major depression with the screening assessment of depression-polarity (SAD-P).

BACKGROUND: Patients with bipolar I or II major depression are often misdiagnosed with unipolar major depression. The goal of this study was to develop and validate a brief instrument to screen for bipolar disorder in patients actively ill with major depression. METHOD: The sample consisted of subjects who enrolled in the National Institute of Mental Health-Collaborative Program on the Psychobiology of Depression-Clinical Studies from 1978 to 1981 during an episode of major depression and included 91 subjects with bipolar I major depression, 52 with bipolar II major depression, and 338 with u

Gender, suicidality and bipolar mixed states in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between mixed states and suicidality among adolescent outpatients presenting with a DSM-IV defined major depressive episode (MDE). METHODS: Two-hundred and forty-seven adolescents meeting the criteria for MDE were screened for the presence of concurrent, intra-MDE hypomania/mania (i.e., mixed states). All patients were asked whether they had current suicidal ideation or had recently attempted any self-destructive physical act associated with the thought of dying (i.e., a suicide attempt). The data were subjected to analys

Nationwide Transdiagnostic Age and Sex Patterns in Mental Disorder Disease Development.

IMPORTANCE: Individuals with mental disorders often experience multiple disease episodes and diagnostic changes after initial psychiatric contact. However, studies that comprehensively investigate heterogeneity in disease development beyond pairs of comorbid diseases and mortality from a transdiagnostic perspective have been lacking. OBJECTIVE: To comprehensively study sex and age patterns of disease development for 7 major groups of mental disorders. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study included data from linkage of national Danish registers of all adult individuals living i

Polygenic Risk, Psychopathology, and Personalized Functional Brain Network Topography in Adolescence.

IMPORTANCE: Functional brain networks are associated with both behavior and genetic factors. To uncover biological mechanisms of psychopathology, it is critical to define how the spatial organization of these networks relates to genetic risk during development. OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationships among transdiagnostic polygenic risk scores (PRSs), personalized functional brain networks (PFNs), and overall psychopathology (p-factor) during early adolescence. DESIGN: The Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study is an ongoing longitudinal cohort study of 21 collection sites acr

Rapamycin as a Potential Alternative Drug for Squamous Cell Gingiva Carcinoma (Ca9-22): A Focus on Cell Cycle, Apoptosis and Autophagy Genetic Profile.

Oral cancer is considered as one of the most common malignancies worldwide. Its conventional treatment primarily involves surgery with or without postoperative adjuvant therapy. The targeting of signaling pathways implicated in tumorigenesis is becoming increasingly prevalent in the development of new anticancer drug candidates. Based on our recently published data, Rapamycin, an inhibitor of the mTOR pathway, exhibits selective antitumor activity in oral cancer by inhibiting cell proliferation and inducing cancer cell apoptosis, autophagy, and cellular stress. In the present study, our focus

Association between psychiatric symptoms with multiple peripheral blood sample test: a 10-year retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric illness is thought to be a brain somatic crosstalk disorder. However, the existing phenomenology-based Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) diagnostic framework overlooks various dimensions other than symptoms. In this study, we investigated the associations between peripheral blood test indexes with various symptom levels of major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BD), and schizophrenia (SCZ) to explore the availability of peripheral blood test indexes. METHODS: We extracted cases diagnosed with MDD, BD, and SCZ at We

Diagnostic efficiency and psychometric properties of CBCL DSM-oriented scales in a large sample of Chinese school-attending students aged 5-16.

BACKGROUND: Children and adolescents are vulnerable to various psychiatric disorders during the critical phase of individual development. In China, the child behavior checklist (CBCL) is a widely employed psychometric questionnaire for assessing children and adolescents. However, further validation of the psychometric properties and diagnostic effectiveness of the CBCL DSM-oriented scales is necessary. These scales were developed based on DSM diagnosis and require evaluation using a substantial sample of Chinese individuals. METHODS: This study involved the analysis of a substantial dataset c

Clinicodemographic correlates of psychotic features in bipolar disorder - a multicenter study in China.

BACKGROUND: Psychotic symptoms are prevalent in patients with bipolar disorder (BD). However, nearly all previous studies on differences in sociodemographic and clinical factors between patients with (BD P +) and without (BD P-) psychotic symptoms were conducted in Western populations, and limited information is known in China. METHOD: A total of 555 patients with BD from seven centers across China were recruited. A standardized procedure was used to collect patients' sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. The patients were divided into BD P + or BD P- groups based on the presence of

Psychosocial burden of type 1 and 2 hereditary angioedema: a single-center Canadian cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare but serious disorder associated with a multifaceted burden of illness including a high prevalence of psychiatric symptoms and impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Despite recent efforts to clarify the psychosocial implications of HAE, important gaps still remain. The aim of this study was to characterize the psychosocial burden associated with HAE types 1 and 2. METHODS: Type 1 or 2 HAE patients (n  =  17), aged 19 years or older, completed the Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale (DASS-21) and the DSM-5 cross cutting measures to iden

Efficacy and Safety of Intranasal Esketamine in Treatment-Resistant Depression in Adults: A Systematic Review.

Intranasal form of esketamine, the S-enantiomer of racemic ketamine, was approved by the US FDA in 2019 for treatment-resistant depression (TRD) in adults. Since intranasal esketamine is a newly approved drug with a novel mechanism of action, much still remains unknown in regard to its use in TRD. The objective of this study is to systematically review the latest existing evidence on intranasal esketamine, and provide a better insight into its safety and efficacy in TRD in adults. PubMed, MEDLINE (through PubMed), and Google Scholar were systematically searched from 2016 to 2021, using automat

Serum Lipids among Drug Naïve or Drug-Free Patients with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and their Association with Impulsivity: A Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: The derangement of serum lipids is well documented in psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia, mania, and depression but not in obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), where it has been inadequately examined. Also, serum lipid abnormalities are increasingly found in "impulsivity," an important sub-construct of OCD. Our study aimed to examine serum lipid profile among patients with OCD and its association with clinical profile and impulsivity among them. METHODS: Forty drug naïve or drug-free (four weeks for oral and eight weeks for any depot psychotropics) patients with OCD accordin

Psychometric properties of the well-being index (WHO-5) spanish version in a sample of euthymic patients with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: The concept of well-being which focuses on positive emotions has received increased research attention. However, a consensus definition of this term is lacking. The Well-Being Index scale (WHO-5) is a generic, self-report scale that contains five Likert-type items to evaluate psychological well-being. This construct may provide a relevant outcome in bipolar disorder (BD) research and care beyond the rating of mood symptoms. Thus, in the current study, the psychometric properties of the WHO-5 Spanish version were assessed in a sample of euthymic patients with BD. METHODS: Patients

Sex differences in behavioral and neurochemical effects of gonadectomy and aromatase inhibition in rats.

Aromatase inhibitors, which are widely used for the treatment of estrogen-dependent cancers, have been associated with psychiatric side effects ranging from mania to depression. In the present study, we investigated sex differences in the behavioral and neurochemical effects of aromatase inhibition on male and female, sham-operated or gonadectomized adult rats. Three weeks after surgery, rats received chronic treatment with the aromatase inhibitor letrozole or vehicle and were then subjected to the open field test, which assesses general activity. Half of the subjects were subsequently exposed

Efficacy of a Culturally Tailored Therapeutic Intervention Program for Community Dwelling Depressed Korean American Women: A Non-Randomized Quasi-Experimental Design Study.

BACKGROUND: Asian American women are more prone to suffer from depression compared to their non-Asian American counterparts and have lower rates of seeking mental healthcare services due to lack of available culturally appropriate therapies. Two prior studies of a culturally tailored therapeutic intervention called LogoAutobiography were helpful in treating depressed Korean American women. The LogoAutobiography program was revised to enhance its efficacy not only for depressive symptoms and purpose in life but also to increase coping strategies.
