Epigenetics of Endometrial Cancer: The Role of Chromatin Modifications and Medicolegal Implications.

Endometrial cancer (EC) is the most common gynecological malignancy in developed countries. Risk factors for EC include metabolic alterations (obesity, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance), hormonal imbalance, age at menopause, reproductive factors, and inherited conditions, such as Lynch syndrome. For the inherited forms, several genes had been implicated in EC occurrence and development, such as POLE, MLH1, TP53, PTEN, PIK3CA, PIK3R1, CTNNB1, ARID1A, PPP2R1A, and FBXW7, all mutated at high frequency in EC patients. However, gene function impairment is not necessarily caused by mutations i

Longitudinal fluctuations in reported background parenchymal enhancement on contrast enhanced mammography.

OBJECTIVES: Background parenchymal enhancement (BPE) and mammographic density (MD) are imaging biomarkers derived from contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM). However, unlike MD, the consistency of BPE across consecutive examinations in pre- and postmenopausal women has remained unexplored. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A computational search was conducted for all screening CEM exams performed at our facility between December-2012 and January-2024 to identify patients with at least five consecutive negative annual screenings. BPE grades and MD categories were extracted from the official radiology repor

Should anti-Müllerian hormone be a diagnosis criterion for polycystic ovary syndrome? An in-depth review of pros and cons.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent endocrine disorder characterized by hyperandrogenism, ovulatory dysfunction, and polycystic ovarian morphology (PCOM). Despite the widespread use of the Rotterdam criteria, challenges in diagnostic accuracy persist. Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), a glycoprotein secreted by ovarian follicles, has emerged as a promising biomarker for refining diagnosis due to its strong correlation with follicular count and elevated levels in women with PCOS. This review critically evaluates the advantages and limitations of incorporating AMH into PCOS diagnostic cr

Association between uric acid to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (UHR) and female infertility: insights from a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Infertility in women of reproductive age is a major worldwide health problem. Oxidative stress, inflammatory responses, and dysregulation of lipid metabolism are among the factors that contribute to female infertility. The ratio of serum uric acid to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (UHR), a novel composite biomarker that reflects oxidative stress and lipid metabolism, has not been extensively studied in relation to female infertility. This study aims to explore the associations between UHR levels and female infertility. METHODS: This cross-sectional study focused on females a

Vascular endothelial cells and angiogenesis.

Physiological vascular endothelial cell division and angiogenesis occur during embryonic development, wound healing, in the endometrium during the menstrual cycle, and during placental development. Otherwise, vascular endothelial cells divide less than once per decade. Neoplasms are limited in size (∼ 1.0 mm) owing to a deficiency of oxygen and metabolic fuels. To grow larger, new blood vessels form from pre-existing vasculature by angiogenesis (capillary sprouting). During this process, mature endothelial cells replicate and become incorporated into new capillaries resulting in tumor growth.

A Case of Familial Mediterranean Fever With Severe Attacks During Withdrawal Bleeding After Controlled Ovarian Hyperstimulation.

Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autoinflammatory disease characterized by periodic fever, serositis, and arthritis. In women, FMF attacks can sometimes be triggered by the menstrual cycle. Once diagnosed, prophylactic treatment with colchicine is generally recommended. Here, we report the case of a 34-year-old nulligravid Japanese woman who met the Tel-Hashomer criteria for FMF with menstruation-associated attacks and experienced a severe FMF episode following controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) for in vitro fertilization (IVF) without prophylactic colchicine. We also discuss ma

Increased ferritin with contraceptives containing ethinyl estradiol drospirenone in polycystic ovary syndrome: a paradox of iron storage and iron deficiency.

OBJECTIVES: The relationship between elevated ferritin levels and metabolic abnormalities in PCOS patients, and whether ferritin is a cause or a consequence, is still debated. This study aimed to evaluate the impacts of the fourth generation combined oral contraceptive containing ethinyl estradiol/drospirenone (EE 30 mcg/DRSP 3 mg), known for its favorable metabolic profile and lower side effect risk, on iron metabolism in PCOS patients, while also exploring the potential relationship between metabolic parameters and iron status. METHODS: The retrospective analysis was conducted on 81 women a
