Essential oils (EOs) are unique materials with healing powers that have been extensively reported. Yet their full antimicrobial potential is still underexplored due to their complex molecular properties, high viscosity, and low solubility, which limit their wide pharmaceutical application. In this study, we report the formulation of water-soluble nanoemulsions (NEs) of three EOs, namely, Artemisia vulgaris, Rhododendron anthopogon, and Eremophila mitchellii. The prepared NEs had an average particle diameter between 190 and 230 nm and remained physically stable at 4°C for up to 6 months. Most i

Biofilm-associated infections pose formidable clinical challenges due to their complicated microenvironment characterized by dense extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), hypoxia, and excessive H2O2. While microneedles can mechanically penetrate biofilms, their efficacy is limited by poor diffusion of antibacterial agents through EPS and secondary infection resulting from escaping planktonic bacteria. Herein, we proposed an oxygen-powered microneedle (FeCN@MN) that synergistically eradicates biofilms through a dual mechanism: ferroptosis-like death-mediated bacterial killing and neutrophil r

Antibacterial screening of endophytic fungi from Salacia intermedia identified Diaporthe longicolla as a potent strain exhibiting good activity against multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, with an MIC of 39.1 µg/mL. Scale-up fermentation and chromatographic purification of this strain yielded three known compounds, which were cytochalasin J (1), cytochalasin H (2), and dicerandrol C (3), as identified by liquid chromatography - high mass resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Among those compounds, dicerandrol

Staphylococcus aureus is widely distributed in environment and can cause various human infection and food poisoning cases. Also, this pathogen is a typical biofilm former, which further complicates its pathogenicity. Antibiotics have been widely used to eliminate pathogenic bacteria, but their indiscriminate use has also led to the widespread emergence of drug-resistant bacteria, such as Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). In this study, the effect of antibiotics on biofilm formation of MRSA strains 875 and 184 was explored. Firstly, MRSA 875 belongs to SCCmec type IV, ST239, c

Staphylococcus aureus is an opportunistic human pathogen that can frequently be found at various body locations, such as the upper respiratory tract, nostrils, skin, and perineum. S. aureus is responsible for causing a variety of conditions, which range from minor skin infections and food poisoning to life-threatening sepsis and endocarditis. Furthermore, S. aureus has developed resistance to numerous antimicrobial agents, which has made treatment of S. aureus infections difficult. In the present study, we examined lifestyle factors that could increase the likelihood of S. aureus carriage, the

INTRODUCTION: Understanding risk factors for antibiotic resistance (AR) in patients with hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is important to select appropriate initial antibiotics and reduce broad-spectrum antibiotic overuse. However, available evidence is limited. We aimed to identify risk factors for AR in those patients.
METHODS: This prospective observational study was conducted at a tertiary-care hospital. Pathogens with AR were defined as those resistant to ampicillin-sulbactam or ceftriaxone. Risk factors for AR in patients with HAP and VAP were

Human infections with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are commonly treated with vancomycin, and strains with decreased susceptibility, designated as vancomycin-intermediate S. aureus (VISA), are associated with treatment failure. Here, we profiled the phenotypic, mutational, and transcriptional landscape of 10 VISA strains adapted by laboratory evolution from one common MRSA ancestor, the USA300 strain JE2. Using functional and independent component analysis, we found that: 1) despite the common genetic background and environmental conditions, the mutational landscape diverg

Antimicrobial coatings are one method to reduce the spread of microbial diseases. Transparent coatings preserve the visual properties of surfaces and are strictly necessary for applications such as antimicrobial cell phone screens. This work describes transparent coatings that inactivate microbes within minutes. The coatings are based on a polydopamine (PDA) adhesive, which has the useful property that the monomer can be sprayed, and then the monomer polymerizes in a conformal film at room temperature. Two coatings are described (1) a coating where PDA is deposited first and then a thin layer

In methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) treatment, the vancomycin minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) increase, vancomycin heteroresistance (hVISA) presence, and accessory gene regulator (agr) dysfunction are predictors of vancomycin therapy failure. This study evaluated the association between vancomycin MIC (≥ 1.0 μg/mL) and agr dysfunction in invasive MRSA isolates. Vancomycin MIC, hVISA phenotype, agr group, and function were determined in 171 MRSA isolates obtained between 2014 and 2019 from hospitals in Porto Alegre, Brazil. All MRSA were susceptible to vancomycin; 16.4%

The occurrence of multidrug-resistant zoonotic bacteria in animals has been increasing worldwide. Working in close contact with livestock increases the risk of carriage of these bacteria. We investigated the occurrence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) and plasmidic AmpC beta-lactamase producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL/pAmpC-PE) and livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) in Finnish veterinarians (n = 320). In addition to microbiological samples, background information was collected. Bacterial whole genome sequencing was performed to deduce sequence

Successful pathogen detection is crucial for public health as the threat of infectious disease is dramatically increasing globally due to bacteria developing resistance to many antimicrobial drugs. The increase in bacterial infections has led to urgent demands for simpler, faster, and more reliable detection methods to be developed allowing the most appropriate therapy to be provided. Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is an analytical technique which has gained a great deal of interest for biosensing due to its sensitivity, selectivity, and multiplexing capabilities. A new bionanosensor

The aim of this work was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of ethanol (EEAC) and hexane (HFAC) extracts from the stem bark of Anadenanthera colubrina (Vell.) Brenan var. cebil alone or in combination with aminoglycosides against multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria. Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the extracts were determined by using microdilution assay. For the evaluation of extracts as modulators of antibiotic resistance, MICs of neomycin and amikacin were determined in presence or absence of each compound at sub-inhibitory concentrations. Both EEAC and HFAC did not show ant

Livestock-associated bacteria with resistance to two or more antibiotic drug classes have heightened our awareness for the consequences of antibiotic consumption and spread of resistant bacterial strains in the veterinary field. In this study we assessed the prevalence of concomitant colonization with livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) and enterobacteriaceae expressing extended-spectrum betalactamases (ESBL-E) in farms at the German-Dutch border region. Nasal colonization of pigs with MRSA (113/547 (20.7%)) was less frequent than rectal colonization with
