Children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis: are health outcomes better for those diagnosed younger?

BACKGROUND: Children living with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) have swollen, painful and stiff joints, which may have an impact on all spheres of their life, as well as their family. While children diagnosed in their preschool years may be at risk for worse physical outcomes than children diagnosed later in life, it is not clear whether they have worse psychological outcomes and whether these outcomes have an impact on their everyday life. The aim of this study was to examine the association between age at diagnosis and health outcomes in families of children with JIA. METHODS: Parents

Personal risk factors for first-time low back pain.

STUDY DESIGN: A prospective study of personal risk factors for first-time low back pain. OBJECTIVES: To construct and validate a multivariate model to predict low back pain. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Various physical and psychological factors have been reported to increase the risk of low back pain, but conflicting results may be attributable to inaccurate "clinical" measures and to poorly validated statistical models. METHODS: A total of 403 health care workers aged 18-40 years volunteered for the study. None had any history of "serious" back pain requiring medical attention or time off

Quantifying and explaining heterogeneity in meta-analytic structural equation modeling: Methods and illustrations.

As a method for developing and testing hypotheses, meta-analytic structural equation modeling, or MASEM, has drawn the interest of scholars. However, challenges remain in how we can model and explain meaningful heterogeneity in structural equation modeling (SEM) parameters. To address this issue, two novel methods have recently been proposed in the literature: Bayesian MASEM (BMASEM) and one-stage MASEM (OSMASEM). How the two methods can be applied to address actual psychological research questions involving heterogeneity is a topic of debate and confusion. In this study, we describe and compa

Generative language models exhibit social identity biases.

Social identity biases, particularly the tendency to favor one's own group (ingroup solidarity) and derogate other groups (outgroup hostility), are deeply rooted in human psychology and social behavior. However, it is unknown if such biases are also present in artificial intelligence systems. Here we show that large language models (LLMs) exhibit patterns of social identity bias, similarly to humans. By administering sentence completion prompts to 77 different LLMs (for instance, 'We are…'), we demonstrate that nearly all base models and some instruction-tuned and preference-tuned models displ

The Self and alien self in psyche and soma.

This paper compares presentations of disorders of the sense of body ownership and agency from psychoanalytic and neurological perspectives to demonstrate similarities in symptomatology proposing these similarities arise from adjustments in Friston's generative model of self-organization and selfhood. The implications for the analytic model of the Self, for clinical practice and for neuroscience research are considered. Patients with narcissistic disorders use projective defences resulting in a disordered sense of what belongs to whom. This applies to mind and body of self and other and is cent

How to generate graded spinal cord injuries in swine - tools and procedures.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a medically, psychologically and socially disabling condition. A large body of our knowledge on the basic mechanisms of SCI has been gathered in rodents. For preclinical validation of promising therapies, the use of animal models that are closer to humans has several advantages. This has promoted the more-intensive development of large-animal models for SCI during the past decade. We recently developed a multimodal SCI apparatus for large animals that generated biomechanically reproducible impacts in vivo. It is composed of a spring-load impactor and support systems

1H NMR-Based Metabonomic Study of Functional Dyspepsia in Stressed Rats Treated with Chinese Medicine Weikangning.

1H NMR-based metabolic profiling combined with multivariate data analysis was used to explore the metabolic phenotype of functional dyspepsia (FD) in stressed rats and evaluate the intervention effects of the Chinese medicine Weikangning (WKN). After a 7-day period of model establishment, a 14-day drug administration schedule was conducted in a WKN-treated group of rats, with the model and normal control groups serving as negative controls. Based on 1H NMR spectra of urine and serum from rats, PCA, PLS-DA, and OPLS-DA were performed to identify changing metabolic profiles. According to the key

Everyday cognitive failure and depressive symptoms predict fatigue in sarcoidosis: A prospective follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue is a major and disabling problem in sarcoidosis. Knowledge concerning correlates of the development of fatigue and possible interrelationships is lacking. OBJECTIVE: A conceptual model of fatigue was developed and tested. METHODS: Sarcoidosis outpatients (n = 292) of Maastricht University Medical Center completed questionnaires regarding trait anxiety, depressive symptoms, cognitive failure, dyspnea, social support, and small fiber neuropathy (SFN) at baseline. Fatigue was assessed at 6 and 12 months. Sex, age, and time since diagnosis were taken from medical records. Pat

[Disorders of body schema].

A variety of disorders have been associated with the concept of body schema. However, this concept has been interpreted in many ways, and there is no consensus on the nature and cognitive mechanisms of body schema. Historically, two major issues have been discussed. One was the body-specificity of the body schema, and the other was the relationship between input and output modality. Autotopagnosia, an inability to localize and orient different parts of the body, has been a focus of attention because it is thought to provide insight into the function of body schema. Although there have not been

The HR/LR model: Further evidence as an animal model of sensation seeking.

Sensation seeking is a personality trait characterized by risk-taking and the desire to experience novel stimuli. Evidence suggests that sensation seeking may increase an individual's psychological and neurobiological vulnerabilities to drug abuse. One potential animal model of human sensation seeking is high response to novelty in rats. High responders (HRs) prefer a novel environment to a familiar one and show an increase in locomotor activity in the new environment. These rats also show lower levels of anxiety-like behaviour on several tests. Furthermore, HRs display a much higher propensit

A novel rat model of comorbid PTSD and addiction reveals intersections between stress susceptibility and enhanced cocaine seeking with a role for mGlu5 receptors.

PTSD is highly comorbid with cocaine use disorder (CUD), and cocaine users with PTSD + CUD are more resistant to treatment. Here we sought to develop a rat model of PTSD + CUD in order to identify the neurobiological changes underlying such comorbidity and screen potential medications for reducing cocaine seeking in the PTSD population. We utilized a predator scent stress model of PTSD, wherein rats received a single exposure to the fox pheromone 2,5-dihydro-2,4,5-trimethylthiazoline (TMT). One week after TMT exposure, stress-susceptible (susceptible), intermediate, and resilient phenotypes we

Enhancing questioning skills through child avatar chatbot training with feedback.

Training child investigative interviewing skills is a specialized task. Those being trained need opportunities to practice their skills in realistic settings and receive immediate feedback. A key step in ensuring the availability of such opportunities is to develop a dynamic, conversational avatar, using artificial intelligence (AI) technology that can provide implicit and explicit feedback to trainees. In the iterative process, use of a chatbot avatar to test the language and conversation model is crucial. The model is fine-tuned with interview data and realistic scenarios. This study used a

Assessment of Deployment-Related Exposures on Risk of Incident Mental Health Diagnoses Among Air Force Medical Service Personnel: Nested Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Recent military conflicts in Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom), Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom), and elsewhere have been associated with psychological impacts among military personnel. However, relatively little is known about the relationship between those conflicts and psychological health of military health care professionals. Previous work has shown certain demographic factors associated with diagnosed mental health conditions after deployment. However, unique exposures in the deployed environment may be present that are also associated. Understanding the relationship bet

Adherence to oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapies in chronic myeloid leukemia.

Ensuring adherence to therapy is a challenge in chronic diseases, particularly in cancers such as chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), where there has been increased availability and use of oral formulations. A conceptual model of adherence was developed based on findings from a comprehensive literature review, to inform strategies for improving adherence to oral CML therapies. A complex interplay of factors (including clinical, psychological and behavioural) influence adherence to such therapies. Healthcare professionals have a key role in promoting and facilitating adherence and future strategies

[Intervention in children with pragmatic language and communication disorders].

AIMS: In this paper we analyse the educational and therapeutic needs of children who present pragmatic disorders in language and communication. DEVELOPMENT: Pragmatic disorders in language and communication stand apart from the other disorders affecting the remaining aspects of language development. Their less specific nature goes beyond the purely linguistic domain and involves wide areas of the patient's affective and social development. CONCLUSIONS: Not only is it necessary to adapt the general model of speech therapy intervention, but also to include it within a set of pedagogical (based

Application Efficacy of the FACE-Q Scale Combined With Anatomic Landmark-Based Evaluation in Preoperative 3D-Printed Model Simulated Surgical Reduction for Cranio-Maxillofacial Multiple Fractures.

BACKGROUND: The evaluation of therapeutic efficacy for cranio-maxillofacial fractures necessitates balancing objective anatomic reduction accuracy with subjective patient-reported quality of life. Traditional methods rely on radiographic metrics while neglecting multidimensional patient experiences. OBJECTIVE: This study integrates 3D-printed model-based anatomic landmark validation with quantitative FACE-Q scale evaluation, conducting a synergistic analysis between surgical precision (submillimeter-level error control) and patient-reported outcomes (appearance, function, psychology), thereby

Association between health-related quality of life and medication discrepancies: a cross-sectional study of older Chinese adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a widely used indicator for assessing individuals' subjective perception of life quality and population health status. It evaluates the multiple dimensions related to health, including physical, psychological, and social aspects, and may be associated with self-management behaviors and treatment adherence in patients with chronic diseases. This study examines the association between HRQoL and medication discrepancies (MDs) among older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) during the transition from hospital to home care.
