Leveling Up Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Autistic Individuals with Emotion Dysregulation: Clinical and Personal Insights.

Autistic people may experience high emotion and sensory sensitivities and a slow return to baseline emotional state. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) was developed to address reactivity, impulsivity, and mood dysregulation in individuals with mood and personality disorders. DBT may be therapeutically beneficial to autistic individuals struggling with these or similar emotional and sensory challenges. This article is a synthesis of the first author's experiences of DBT as an autistic person and professional insights from all authors. We provide an overview of the development of DBT, its found

Diurnal cognitive functioning in patients with myasthenia gravis with the role of chronotype and depression: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disease manifested by fatigue and weakness of the skeletal muscles. Recent research has indicated that MG patients perform significantly worse than healthy controls in cognitive domains such as attention, verbal fluency, visual learning, and memory. This study aimed to investigate the diurnal fluctuations in cognitive performance in patients with myasthenia gravis in relation to selected clinical and socioeconomic parameters of the disease course, along with the role of chronotype and depression. METHODS: The participants were recruited from a

Amygdala neuronal dyshomeostasis via 5-HT receptors mediates mood and cognitive defects in Alzheimer's disease.

Behavioral changes or neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPSs) are common features in dementia and are associated with accelerated cognitive impairment and earlier deaths. However, how NPSs are intertwined with cognitive decline remains elusive. In this study, we identify that the basolateral amygdala (BLA) is a key brain region that is associated with mood disorders and memory decline in the AD course. During the process from pre- to post-onset in AD, the dysfunction of parvalbumin (PV) interneurons and pyramidal neurons in the amygdala leads to hyperactivity of pyramidal neurons in the basal state a

The potential role of the orexin system in premenstrual syndrome.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) occurs recurrently during the luteal phase of a woman's menstrual cycle and disappears after menstruation ends. It is characterized by abnormal changes in both the body and mood, and in certain cases, severe disruptions in daily life and even suicidal tendencies. Current drugs for treating PMS, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, do not yield satisfactory results. Orexin, a neuropeptide produced in the lateral hypothalamus, is garnering attention in the treatment of neurological disorders and is believed to modulate the symptoms of PMS. This paper revie

Microdosing Psychedelics: Current Evidence From Controlled Studies.

Taking regular low doses of psychedelic drugs (microdosing) is a practice that has drawn recent scientific and media attention for its potential psychotherapeutic effects. Yet, controlled studies evaluating this practice have lagged. Here, we review recent evidence focusing on studies that were conducted with rigorous experimental control. Studies conducted under laboratory settings using double-blind placebo-controlled procedures and investigator-supplied drug were compiled. The review includes demographic characteristics of participants and dependent measures such as physiological, behaviora

Neuropsychiatric Manifestations of a Frontal Lobe Meningioma: A Case Report.

The exclusion of organic causes for psychiatric symptoms is a routine practice in mental healthcare. Brain tumors can elicit a range of mood, behavioral, or cognitive symptoms that mimic mental health disorders, significantly altering a patient's personality and behavior if left undiagnosed or untreated. This case report presents a 56-year-old Middle Eastern male with no prior history of mental illness who exhibited a three-week history of depressive symptoms, social withdrawal, and poor self-care. Despite treatment, his condition deteriorated, manifesting psychomotor retardation, urinary inco

Life stress influences the relationship between sex hormone fluctuation and affective symptoms in peripubertal female adolescents.

Female adolescents have a greatly increased risk of depression starting at puberty, which continues throughout the reproductive lifespan. Sex hormone fluctuation has been highlighted as a key proximal precipitating factor in the development of mood disorders tied to reproductive events; however, hormone-induced affective state change is poorly understood in the pubertal transition. The present study investigated the impact of recent stressful life events on the relationship between sex hormone change and affective symptoms in peripubertal female participants. Thirty-five peripubertal participa

Evaluation of an Augmented Cognitive Behavioural Group Therapy for Perinatal Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The perinatal period is considered a window of vulnerability given the increased risk of psychiatric difficulties during this time, such as mood and anxiety disorders (ADs). Pre-pandemic rates of ADs in perinatal women were one in five but have since increased with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic (COVID). In addition, recent research suggests that the focus of worry has shifted during the pandemic, with perinatal women reporting significantly more COVID-specific worries. The objective of this study was to augment our current evidence-based Cognitive Behavioural Group Therapy (CBGT) for peri

Negative cognitive styles as risk factors for the occurrence of PMS and PMDD.

Background: The purpose of our study is to verify whether elements of cognitive vulnerability to affective disorders may enhance the occurrence of PMS/PMDD. Methods: In total, 293 women with regular cycles took part in the study. The subjects were exposed to failure during the follicular phase or luteal phase, as appropriate, and the attributional style of failure, cognitive triad inventory (CTI) and presence of biased information processing were determined. The mood of the subjects before and after failure was measured, and the depressive mood was screened by CES-D. The occurrence of PMS/PMDD

Korean survey data reveals an association of chronic laryngitis with tinnitus in men.

The association between chronic laryngitis and tinnitus is not a well-studied topic, unlike the association of these two conditions with many other disorders. Cross-sectional data of 11,347 adults (males: 4,934; females: 6,413), who completed the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) from 2010 to 2012 were used to investigate this association. Lifestyle patterns, including smoking and alcohol habits, regular exercise, physical and mental health status, socioeconomic status, nutritional status, and other chronic diseases, were analyzed. Chronic laryngitis and tinnitus

Vestibular stimulation improves insight into illness in schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

Impaired insight into illness (IMP-INS) is common among individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD), contributing to medication nonadherence and poor clinical outcomes. Caloric vestibular simulation (CVS) is typically used to assess peripheral vestibular system function. Left cold CVS is also a transiently effective treatment for IMP-INS and hemineglect secondary to right brain hemisphere stroke, and possibly for IMP-INS and mood stabilization in patients with SSD. Participants with SSD and moderate-to-severe IMP-INS participated in an exploratory double blind, crossover, randomize

Maladaptive and adaptive emotion regulation through music: a behavioral and neuroimaging study of males and females.

Music therapists use guided affect regulation in the treatment of mood disorders. However, self-directed uses of music in affect regulation are not fully understood. Some uses of music may have negative effects on mental health, as can non-music regulation strategies, such as rumination. Psychological testing and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) were used explore music listening strategies in relation to mental health. Participants (n = 123) were assessed for depression, anxiety and Neuroticism, and uses of Music in Mood Regulation (MMR). Neural responses to music were measured in

Juvenile fibromyalgia: current status of research and future developments.

Juvenile-onset fibromyalgia (JFM) is a poorly understood chronic pain condition most commonly affecting adolescent girls. The condition is characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain and other associated symptoms, including fatigue, nonrestorative sleep, headaches, irritable bowel symptoms, dysautonomia and mood disorders such as anxiety and/or depression. In the past few years, there has been a greater focus on understanding JFM in adolescents. Research studies have provided insight into the clinical characteristics of this condition and its effect on both short-term and long-term psycho

Reduced left subgenual anterior cingulate cortical activity during withdrawal-related emotions in melancholic depressed female patients.

BACKGROUND: Research regarding the neurocircuitry in mood disorders suggests an important role for affective information processing of the subgenual part of the anterior cingulate cortex (Cg25: Brodmann area 25). OBJECTIVE: In this study, we focused on Cg25 neuronal responses in depressed females using a paradigm in which emotions are elicited without explicit cognitive control, relying on the salient nature of the mood inducing stimuli eliciting approach-related emotions (like happiness) or withdrawal-related emotions (like disgust). METHODS: Twelve treatment-resistant melancholic depressed

Polish version of the Hypomania Checklist (HCL-32) scale: the results in treatment-resistant depression.

We performed the factor analysis of the Polish version of the Hypomania Check List (HCL-32) scale and assessed the utility of HCL-32 in discriminating patients with treatment-resistant and treatment non-resistant depression. The study included 1,051 patients with single or recurrent depressive episode among which 569 met the criteria for treatment-resistant depression. The Polish version of HCL-32 was employed to all patients. The Cronbach's alpha for entire scale was 0.93 which indicates high degree of consistency. The factor analysis of the scale yielded three factors with item loadings of 0

Mixed anxiety depression: taxometric exploration of the validity of a diagnostic category in youth.

BACKGROUND: Mixed anxiety depression (MAD) is a provisional diagnosis in the DSM-IV. This study determined whether MAD represents a discrete category thereby evaluating the validity of MAD as a diagnostic entity. METHODS: Taxometric analyses and mixture modeling were used to discern whether MAD indicators constitute a distinct psychopathological category (i.e., a taxon) in a large school-based sample of adolescents (N=706). RESULTS: Each taxometric procedure (MAXCOV, MAMBAC) identified a taxon with a prevalence of 13%+/-2%. A non-taxometric procedure (multivariate mixture modeling) also supp

Valproate attenuates dextroamphetamine-induced subjective changes more than lithium.

Dextroamphetamine administration in healthy controls produces a range of subjective and physiological effects, which have been likened to those occurring during mania. However, it is uncertain if these can be attenuated by lithium since conflicting results have been reported. To date there have been no previous studies examining the effects of valproate on dextroamphetamine-induced mood and physiological changes. The current study was a double-blind, placebo-controlled, study in which volunteers received either 1000 mg sodium valproate (n=12), 900 mg lithium (n=9), or placebo (n=12) pre-treatm

Endocrinology of menopausal transition and its brain implications.

The central nervous system is one of the main target tissues for sex steroid hormones, which act on both through genomic mechanisms, modulating synthesis, release, and metabolism of many neuropeptides and neurotransmitters, and through non-genomic mechanisms, influencing electrical excitability, synaptic function, morphological features, and neuron-glia interactions. During the climacteric period, sex steroid deficiency causes many neuroendocrine changes. At the hypothalamic level, estrogen withdrawal gives rise to vasomotor symptoms, to eating behavior disorders, and altered blood pressure co
