Why some parents made firearms more accessible during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic: results from a national study.

The objective of this study was to assess parents' firearm storage behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic and characterize reasons why some parents made their firearms more accessible during this time. In June-July 2020, the study team conducted the FACTS National Survey-a cross-sectional, web-based, survey of 2,924 parents and their teens (ages14-18) regarding firearm-related practices. We weighted descriptive analyses to be nationally representative of parents of teens in the United States. We utilized qualitative thematic analysis to identify parents' reasons for making firearms more access

Differential effects of quinine adulteration of alcohol on seeking and drinking.

Alcohol dependence is characterized by compulsive alcohol use. Alcohol-paired stimuli can drive compulsive alcohol use, induce craving, and lead to relapse. Alcohol dependence is highly heritable, and individuals with a family history are at elevated risk to develop an alcohol use disorder. Understanding the association between genetic vulnerability to alcohol dependence and neural alterations that promote an addiction phenotype are critical to the prevention and treatment of alcohol dependence. Here we use selectively bred alcohol-preferring P rats and their progenitor strain, Wistar rats, to

'An insight into circumcised men seeking foreskin reconstruction: a prospective cohort study'.

The aim of this study was to present a cohort of men seeking assistance with foreskin reconstruction, with the objective to broaden the general understanding for this specific request. All men between January 2015 and May 2019 seeking assistance with foreskin reconstruction were included. We prospectively collected data on patient demographics and outcomes such as their motivations, treatment trajectory, and experiences. A total of 11 patients were identified and included (age range 20-62). The majority were circumcised during adulthood for medical reasons. Among the most prominent motivations

The spectrum of sexual transaction: representations in young Africans' HIV-themed creative narratives.

Sexual transaction, or any exchange of financial or material goods for sex, contributes to the disproportionate HIV burden among young women aged 15-24 years in sub-Saharan Africa. We analysed representations of sexual transactions in a sample of 363 narratives about HIV written by young Africans. The narratives were written at 4 time points (1997, 2005, 2008, 2014) by authors aged 10-24 years in urban and rural areas of Senegal, Burkina Faso, South-east Nigeria, Kenya and Eswatini, formerly Swaziland. We combined three analytical approaches: descriptive statistics of quantifiable characterist

Multifaceted Quality Improvement Initiative Improves Retention in Treatment for Youth with Opioid Use Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: There is a critical need to develop interventions that help adolescents and young adults with opioid use disorders (OUDs) connect with, engage in, and remain consistent with the treatment given that patients who develop long-term OUDs experience long-term medical and mental health sequelae. METHODS: We implemented quality improvement (QI) processes to increase early engagement and 6-month retention within a medication-assisted treatment clinic for youth with OUDs. QI interventions included motivational interviewing (MI) staff training, implementation of reduced initial treatment

Street Medics: An innovative learning opportunity for UK medical students in a primary care outreach setting.

It is well known that recruitment into general practice (GP) is low, particularly in deprived areas. Undergraduate medical students are encouraged to learn about health inequalities. However, teaching on this area has been perceived by some as uninspiring. Innovative teaching opportunities can engage students but more research is needed regarding exposure to deprived inner-city settings. Street Medics is an extra-curricular, educational initiative which enables students to join GPs doing street-outreach work. The aim of the study was to understand what motivates undergraduate medical students t

Eight-month-old infants' behavioral responses to peers' emotions as related to the asymmetric frontal cortex activity.

Infants are sensitive to and converge emotionally with peers' distress. It is unclear whether these responses extend to positive affect and whether observing peer emotions motivates infants' behaviors. This study investigates 8-month-olds' asymmetric frontal EEG during peers' cry and laughter, and its relation to approach and withdrawal behaviors. Participants observed videos of infant crying or laughing during two separate sessions. Frontal EEG alpha power was recorded during the first, while infants' behaviors and emotional expressions were recorded during the second session. Facial and voca

Overexpression of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia major facilitator superfamily protein MfsA increases resistance to fluoroquinolone antibiotics.

BACKGROUND: Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is an opportunistic human pathogen causing nosocomial infections worldwide. S. maltophilia infection is of particular concern due to its inherent resistance to currently used antibiotics. Proton motive force-driven transporters of the major facilitator superfamily frequently contribute to the efflux of substances, including antibiotics, across cell membranes. METHODS: An mfsA expression plasmid (pMfsA) was constructed and transferred into bacterial strains by electroporation. The antibiotic susceptibility levels of S. maltophilia strains were determine

Incidence and associations of intracorneal ring segment explantation.

PURPOSE: To assess the incidence and motivating determinants of explantation of intracorneal ring segments (ICRS) (Intacs) used for the treatment of keratoconus and corneal ectasia. SETTING: Cornea and refractive surgery subspecialty practice. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. METHODS: Consecutive cases of ICRS implantation performed to treat keratoconus or corneal ectasia were reviewed to determine the number that were eventually explanted and the motivating factors for explantation. Cases were assigned to 1 of 2 groups: (1) medical complications requiring removal and (2) refractive/topog

Predictive genetic testing experience for myocilin primary open-angle glaucoma using the Australian and New Zealand Registry of Advanced Glaucoma.

PURPOSE: Predictive genetic testing of relatives of known myocilin (MYOC) gene mutation carriers is an appropriate strategy to identify individuals at risk for glaucoma. It is likely to prevent irreversible blindness in this high-risk group because this treatable condition might otherwise be diagnosed late. The Australian and New Zealand Registry of Advanced Glaucoma has established genetic testing protocols for known glaucoma genes, including MYOC. METHODS: Through the Australian and New Zealand Registry of Advanced Glaucoma, we investigated the experience of 40 unaffected individuals who ha

[Compulsory hospitalisation of patients suffering from severe drug or alcohol addiction].

BACKGROUND: Psychiatrists treating patients with drug and alcohol addiction currently consider these afflicions to be mental disorders. If patients are so mentally disturbed that they are a danger to themselves or others, then compulsory hospitalisation seems to be an acceptable treatment option. However, it would seem that at present this solution is not normal practice in addiction care. AIM: To describe the indications for compulsory hospitalisation when mental disorders associated with addiction and withdrawal cause risks and dangers. METHOD: Discussion of the indications for compulsory

Socio-ecological factors correlate with levels of stereotypic behavior in zoo-housed primates.

Stereotypic behavior often indicates poor welfare. It may develop when the animal's ability to carry out appropriate behavioral responses is limited, despite a high motivation to express them. Behavioral motivations vary across species. Consequently, under similar captive conditions, the sustained inability of animals to express certain behaviors is likely to affect some species more than others. We used a phylogenetic comparative approach to evaluate the socio-ecological factors affecting the manifestation of stereotypic behavior in 24 species of zoo-housed primates. We examined the relations

Effectiveness of an upper extremity exercise device and text message reminders to exercise in adults with spina bifida: a pilot study.

Obesity, deconditioning, cognitive impairment, and poor exercise tolerance are health issues concerning adults with spina bifida (SB). Our aim is to describe exercise participation and identify motivating tactics and exercise devices that increase participation. In a quasi-experimental randomized crossover design, the GameCycle was compared to a Saratoga Silver I arm ergometer. Personalized free or low-cost text/voice message reminders to exercise were sent. Nineteen young adults with SB were assigned to either the GameCycle or Saratoga exercise group. Within each group, participants were rand

Genetic and early environmental contributions to alcohol's aversive and physiological effects.

Genetic and early environmental factors interact to influence ethanol's motivational effects. To explore these issues, a reciprocal cross-fostering paradigm was applied to Fischer and Lewis rats. The adult female offspring received vehicle or the kappa opioid antagonist nor-BNI (1 mg/kg) followed by assessments of conditioned taste aversion (CTA), blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) and hypothermia induced by 1.25 g/kg intraperitoneal ethanol. CTA acquisition in the in-fostered Fischer and Lewis animals did not differ; however, the Fischer maternal environment produced stronger acquisition in

Enhancing attitudes and intentions in prospective blood donors: evaluation of a new donor recruitment brochure.

BACKGROUND: Although little empiric evidence has been published concerning the efficacy of blood donor recruitment materials, research suggests that simple attempts to enhance knowledge may not be sufficient to motivate donation. In contrast, recent donor motivation studies highlight the importance of anxiety, attitudes, and perceived ability to cope with donation (i.e., self-efficacy) as crucial determinants of donation intention. Therefore, recruitment materials that specifically address these constructs have the potential to outperform traditional educational brochures. STUDY DESIGN AND ME

Monetary incentives enhance processing in brain regions mediating top-down control of attention.

To evaluate the effect of an abstract motivational incentive on top-down mechanisms of visual spatial attention, 10 subjects engaged in a target detection task and responded to targets preceded by spatially valid (predictive), invalid (misleading) or neutral central cues under three different incentive conditions: win money (WIN), lose money (LOSE), and neutral (neither gain nor lose). Activation in the posterior cingulate cortex was correlated with visual spatial expectancy, defined as the degree to which the valid cue benefited performance as evidenced by faster reaction times compared to no

Identifying barriers and facilitating factors to improve screening mammography rates in women diagnosed with mental illness and substance use disorders.

Little is known about screening mammography rates among women diagnosed with mental illness-even though some studies have suggested that this population might be particularly vulnerable to breast cancer. The purpose of this pilot study was to identify facilitators and barriers to mammography among women diagnosed with mental illness and/or substance use disorders. Four focus groups were conducted, with a total of 26 women, ages 40-65 years, with mental illness and/ or substance use disorders. Analysis was performed using the grounded-theory editing approach. Several major themes emerged from t

A case study of employment case management with chronically unemployed methadone maintained clients.

Employment interventions implemented in drug treatment programs have been marginally successful, but few interventions have been found to address the needs of chronically unemployed clients. Employment case management (ECM) is a comprehensive employment intervention strategy designed to motivate chronically unemployed persons to engage in work, assist in job placement, and provide post employment support through workforce integration, while maintaining progress in drug treatment. This clinical case study reports on a convenience sample of 10 chronically unemployed methadone maintained clients
