We report a 49-year-old woman with an eccrine syringofibroadenoma. An asymptomatic nodule appeared on the right heel, and subsequently enlarged gradually. Histological examination revealed anastomosing strands of pale epithelial cells, with occasional duct formation and mucinous fibrovascular stroma. There were two types of strands: thick and thin. Immunohistochemical study, using a panel of monoclonal antikeratin antibodies, revealed that the immunoreactivity differed between the two types of strands. Fifty 22-month-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed for 8 weeks ad libitum with either a 20% protein diet (control) or a 5% protein diet (protein malnourished group). Submandibular glands were removed, weighed and homogenate prepared. After the low protein diet, there was a slight but significant decrease in body weight, glandular content of total protein (mg/g tissue), kallikrein activity/mg protein and glutamine-rich peptide. The incidence of cysts in pregnancy was established with ultrasound. In 3,330 pregnant patients who underwent sonography, 38 adnexal cystic lesions (1.14%) were found. Iodoacetamide (IAA), an ulcerogenic compound, was continuously given to male Wistar rats for up to 74 weeks. No carcinomas developed but marked glandular hyperplasias were frequently observed accompanied by chronic ulcer or erosion in the fundic region.
