FDA drug approval summary: bevacizumab (Avastin) plus Carboplatin and Paclitaxel as first-line treatment of advanced/metastatic recurrent nonsquamous non-small cell lung cancer.

On October 11, 2006, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted approval for bevacizumab (Avastin; Genentech, Inc., South San Francisco, CA), administered in combination with carboplatin and paclitaxel, for the initial treatment of patients with unresectable, locally advanced, recurrent, or metastatic, nonsquamous, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Approval is based on a significant improvement in overall survival (OS). A randomized, open label, multicenter clinical trial, conducted by the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG), in chemotherapy-naïve patients with stage IIIB/IV nonsqua

Applicability of a "Pick a Winner" trial design to acute myeloid leukemia.

Randomized clinical trials remain the gold standard to establish efficacy and safety of new treatments. In acute myeloid leukemia, large trials have been associated with gradual improvement in outcome over 2 decades in younger patients without major differences emerging between treatments. By contrast, in older patients, improvement has been minimal, which justifies a new approach to identifying effective treatments. Given the urgent unmet need, and with the emergence of several novel agents or combinations that are likely to be expensive, large benefits are probably required to change clinica

Nutritional and Supplemental Interventions for Prevention and Treatment of Oral Mucositis in Pediatric Oncology.

Background: Oral mucositis (OM) is a frequent complication of anticancer therapy which arises from cytotoxic injury, having significant clinical implications. Nutritional and supplement-based interventions have been proposed as adjunctive strategies to improve outcomes. Objectives: This systematic review aimed to identify and synthesize evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating nutritional or natural supplement interventions for prevention or management of OM in pediatric oncology. Methods: We conducted a systematic search (17 August 2025) of Scopus, PubMed/MEDLINE, and Goog

A retrospective analysis of complications associated with postpartum hemorrhage up to 1 year postpartum in mothers with and without a pre-existing mental health diagnosis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: There is limited research on the associated immediate and long-term outcomes of postpartum hemorrhage. Mothers with a pre-existing psychiatric disease prior to delivery may be especially vulnerable to postpartum hemorrhage outcomes but little is known on this topic. Barriers to studying this population exist and add to knowledge gaps. The goal of this study is to determine the clinical characteristics and frequency of complications within 1 year of a postpartum hemorrhage diagnosis and the psychiatric sequelae within 7 days of a postpartum hemorrhage diagnosis in mothers

Efficacy and Tolerability of a Novel Tretinoin 0.05% Lotion for the Once-Daily Treatment of Moderate or Severe Acne Vulgaris in Adult Females.

Background: A novel tretinoin 0.05% lotion formulation has been shown to be efficacious and well-tolerated, and especially effective in adult female acne patients. While it is perhaps counter-intuitive that patients with more severe disease would show clinically significant improvement with topical monotherapy, topical retinoids have been shown to offer realistic treatment options in these patients. Objective: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of once-daily tretinoin 0.05% lotion in adult females with moderate or severe acne. Methods: Post hoc analysis of two multicenter, randomized, double-

Once daily Bromelain-based enzymatic debridement of venous leg ulcers versus gel vehicle (placebo) and non-surgical standard of care: a three-arm multicenter, double blinded, randomized controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Debridement is considered the first step in treatment of chronic wounds, however, current enzymatic and autolytic debridement agents are slow or ineffective. Previous studies have shown positive initial results with EscharEx® (EX-02 formulation), a Bromelain-based enzymatic debridement agent in development for chronic wounds. The main objective of this study was to assess its efficacy in debriding venous leg ulcers (VLU), compared to gel vehicle (GV) as a placebo control and to non-surgical standard of care (NSSOC). METHODS: A prospective, randomized, multicenter, placebo-controll

Antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of clinically relevant blood culture isolates from nine surgical intensive care units, 1996-2000.

In order to elucidate trends in the incidence and susceptibility profiles of causative agents of bacteremia/fungemia in nine surgical intensive care units, a total of 744 isolates obtained during a 5-year period (1996-2000) were studied. The isolates included 698 bacteria and 46 fungi obtained from 523 positive blood cultures, representing 317 episodes of bacteremia/fungemia. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus accounted for 2.3 episodes per 1000 surgical ICU admissions in 1996, 1.6 in 1997, 0.3 in 1998, 0.6 in 1999, and 1.7 in 2000. Research trends in post-ERCP pancreatitis: a dual-database bibliometric analysis.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is associated with several adverse events, of which post-ERCP pancreatitis (PEP) is the most frequent despite established preventive measures. Clinical reviews evaluate risk factors and interventions, but the organization and development of the research field have received less attention. This study examined the development of the literature on PEP incidence, risk stratification, prediction, and prevention. METHODS: The Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) and Scopus were last searched on July 31, 2026. English-language artic

A comprehensive evaluation of Naftifine's efficacy and safety in treating dermatophyte infections; systematic review and meta-analysis.

Dermatophyte infections, including tinea pedis (athlete's foot), tinea corporis (ringworm), and tinea cruris (jock itch), are widespread fungal infections that significantly impact global health and quality of life. Naftifine, an allylamine antifungal agent, is noted for its potent fungicidal activity, targeting fungal cell membranes by inhibiting squalene epoxidase. Additionally, Naftifine has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, enhancing its therapeutic potential. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to comprehensively evaluate the efficacy and safety of Naftifine in tre

Eighteen-hour inhibitory effect of s-ketamine on potassium- and ischemia-induced spreading depolarizations in the gyrencephalic swine brain.

Spreading depolarizations (SDs) are characterized by near-complete breakdown of the transmembrane ion gradients, cytotoxic edema, and glutamate release. SDs are associated with poor neurological outcomes in cerebrovascular diseases and brain trauma. Ketamine, a N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor antagonist, has shown to inhibit SDs in animal models and in humans. However, little is known about its SD-inhibitory effect during long-term administration. Lissencephalic animal models have shown that ketamine loses its SD-blocking effect after some minutes to hours. Physio-anatomical differences between

Appendectomy versus nonoperative management of simple appendicitis: A post hoc analysis of an Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma multicenter study using a hierarchical ordinal scale.

BACKGROUND: Controversy exists about the preferred initial treatment of appendicitis. We sought to compare the two treatments for initial management of simple appendicitis. METHODS: In this post hoc analysis of the Multicenter Study for the Treatment of Appendicitis in America: Acute, Perforated, and Gangrenous database, subjects were divided into appendectomy or nonoperative management (NOM; antibiotics only or percutaneous drainage) cohorts. A novel topic-specific hierarchical ordinal scale was created with eight mutually exclusive categories: mortality, reoperation, other secondary interve

Perioperative Management in Patients With Cleft Lip and Palate.

In cleft care, perioperative treatment strategies like ear nose and throat (ENT) diagnostics as well as postoperative antibiotics, feeding, and duration of inpatient stay are nonstandardized procedures varying between different centers. Likewise, intraoperative choice of suture materials and time of suture removal are performed inconsistently. Therefore, we wanted to collect information on protocols focusing on these topics to summarize and subsume currently approved treatment strategies of centers around the world. We ask members of international cleft centers for their respective treatment s

The Almost-Normal Liver Biopsy: Presentation, Clinical Associations, and Outcome.

Liver biopsies obtained for abnormal liver enzymes or unexplained ascites occasionally appear histologically almost normal. The differential diagnosis for these cases is challenging because literature addressing this topic is lacking. We aimed to establish a differential diagnosis and determine clinical associations and outcomes for almost-normal liver biopsies. Ninety-seven histologically almost-normal liver biopsies were collected from 2 institutions. All cases lacked significant inflammation, fatty change, biliary tract disease, vascular disease, nodular regenerative hyperplasia, iron overl
