A quantitative test to detect lymphocytes sensitized against the surface of muscle cells.

A test is described which assesses quantitatively the capacity of lymphocytes taken from myositic animals to adhere to skeletal muscle cells in vitro. Lymphocytes were taken from guinea-pigs in which a polymyositis had been induced by injection of rabbit skeletal muscle and complete Freund's adjuvant. These lymphocytes attached themselves preferentially to multinucleate myotubes as opposed to the mononuclear cells in tissue cultures made from chick skeletal muscle. The degree of preference was calculated as a Preferential Attachment (PA) index. This index was high in those animals which develo

Sensorimotor Time Delay Estimation by EMG Signal Processing in People Living with Spinal Cord Injury.

Neuro mechanical time delay is inevitable in the sensorimotor control of the body due to sensory, transmission, signal processing and muscle activation delays. In essence, time delay reduces stabilization efficiency, leading to system instability (e.g., falls). For this reason, estimation of time delay in patients such as people living with spinal cord injury (SCI) can help therapists and biomechanics to design more appropriate exercise or assistive technologies in the rehabilitation procedure. In this study, we aim to estimate the muscle onset activation in SCI people by four strategies on EM

Locomotor patterns during obstacle avoidance in children with cerebral palsy.

We investigated how early injuries to developing brain affect the interaction of locomotor patterns with the voluntary action required by obstacle clearance. This task requires higher cognitive load and specific anticipatory sensorimotor integration than more automated steady-state gait. To this end, we compared the adaptive gait patterns during obstacle clearance in 40 children with cerebral palsy (CP) (24 diplegic, 16 hemiplegic, 2-12 yr) and 22 typically developing (TD) children (2-12 yr) by analyzing gait kinematics, joint moments during foot elevation, electromyographic (EMG) activity of

Erythroderma and extensive poikiloderma - a rare initial presentation of dermatomyositis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Dermatomyositis is a humoral-mediated inflammatory myopathy with symmetrical proximal muscle weakness and dermatological manifestations such as Gottron's papules, heliotrope rash, periungual abnormalities, and flagellate erythema. Erythroderma is a severe and potentially life-threatening dermatological condition with diffuse erythema and scaling involving more than 90% of the skin surface area. Poikiloderma vasculare atrophicans refers to mottled hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation of the skin with in-between telangiectases and areas of atrophy and is considered a variant of myc

Simultaneous Occurrence of Buckle Infection and Migration: A Case Report.

Background: When scleral buckling is performed using a #240 encircling band anterior to the equator for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, buckle migration may occur anteriorly, eroding the rectus muscle. There are few cases of buckle migration occurring simultaneously with buckle infection. Notably, most previous reports included inadequate data on the pathophysiology of buckle migration and did not include the Hess test and perioperative images. Case presentation: A 36-year-old man with a history of atopic dermatitis underwent scleral buckling for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment of the lef

A Mouse Model of Delayed Rotator Cuff Repair Results in Persistent Muscle Atrophy and Fatty Infiltration.

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff (RC) tears are common tendon injuries seen in orthopaedic patients. Successful repair of large and massive RC tears remains a challenge due to our limited understanding of the pathophysiological features of this injury. Clinically relevant small animal models that can be used to study the pathophysiological response to repair are limited by the lack of chronic repair models. PURPOSE: To develop a highly clinically relevant mouse model of delayed RC repair. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: Three-month-old C57BL/6J mice underwent unilateral supraspi

A Meta-Analysis to Determine if Lower Extremity Muscle Strengthening Should Be Included in Military Knee Overuse Injury-Prevention Programs.

CONTEXT: Knee overuse injuries are the most common musculoskeletal complaints in military trainees and are common in active-duty warfighters. Muscle strengthening is usually recommended; however, research is conflicting in this area, which makes it difficult to develop effective screening, prevention, and training interventions for warfighters. OBJECTIVE: To determine if lower extremity muscular weakness contributes to knee overuse injuries and identify specific muscular involvement. DATA SOURCES: We searched MEDLINE, PubMed, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, CINAHL, and Military & Government Col

Clinical progression in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A duplication: clinico-electrophysiological and MRI longitudinal study of a family.

Long-term follow-up studies in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1 duplication (CMT1A) are scanty. Here we describe a longitudinal study in a CMT1A pedigree. Our CMT1A pedigree comprised 11 examined patients, ages between 13 and 83 (median, 36) years, serially evaluated for up to 26 years. In all 11 patients we carried out electrophysiological evaluation, and in three of them magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of lower-limb musculature. The 54-year-old proband patient, yearly examined as of age 28, developed at age 48 gradual and progressive distal lower-leg weakness ascending to thigh musculatur

Muscle synergies for evaluating upper limb in clinical applications: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Muscle synergies have been proposed as a strategy employed by the central nervous system to control movements. Muscle synergy analysis is a well-established framework to examine the pathophysiological basis of neurological diseases and has been applied for analysis and assessment in clinical applications in the last decades, even if it has not yet been widely used in clinical diagnosis, rehabilitative treatment and interventions. Even if inconsistencies in the outputs among studies and lack of a normative pipeline including signal processing and synergy analysis limit the progres

A review of the diagnosis and treatment of chronic pancreatitis-associated sarcopenia.

Chronic pancreatitis (CP) causes inflammation of the pancreas, resulting in structural damage and impaired exocrine and endocrine function. Chronic pain, nutritional deficiencies from nutrient maldigestion, and hyperglycemia cause a large number of consultations and hospital admissions, and a significant burden on the health care system. Intractable pain, alcoholism, and malabsorption place these patients at considerable risk of developing sarcopenia, with a prevalence of 17-62 %. While diagnostic methods have been developed to assess muscle mass in these patients, they still lack standardizat

Diagnosis in Disarray: A Rare Case of Leiomyoma of the Vulva.

Extrauterine leiomyomas are more uncommon and difficult to diagnose. These smooth muscle cell-based tumours, which are histologically benign, often develop in the genitourinary tract (in the vulva, ovaries, urethra, and urinary bladder); however, they can develop in almost any anatomic region. As reported in the literature, vulval leiomyomas are rare and commonly misdiagnosed as Bartholin cysts prior to surgery. These painless, isolated, well-circumscribed smooth muscle tumours can afflict females of any age group. This report describes the case of a 25-year-old female who visited the hospital

Molecular specification of facial branchial motor neurons in vertebrates.

Orofacial muscles are critical for life-sustaining behaviors, such as feeding and breathing. Centuries of work by neuroanatomists and surgeons resulted in the mapping of bulbar motor neurons in the brainstem and the course of the cranial nerves that carry their axons. Despite the sophisticated understanding of the anatomy of the region, the molecular mechanisms that dictate the development and maturation of facial motor neurons remain poorly understood. This fundamental problem has been recently revisited by physiologists with novel techniques of studying the rhythmic contraction of orofacial

A Case Report of Drug-Induced Myopathy Involving Extraocular Muscles after Combination Therapy with Tremelimumab and Durvalumab for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.

Recently developed anti-tumour therapies targeting immune checkpoints include tremelimumab and durvalumab. These agents have incompletely characterised side effect profiles. The authors report a 68-year-old man treated for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with a combination of tremelimumab and durvalumab. After treatment he developed diplopia, ptosis, fatigue, weakness, and an inflammatory myopathy affecting the extraocular muscles requiring hospitalisation. Electromyography (EMG) testing and muscle biopsy suggested inflammatory myopathy without sign of myasthenia. Within 1 month of withdraw

Clinical Reasoning: a 57-year-old man with jaw spasms.

A 57-year-old man presented with spasms of his left jaw. Two years prior, he had developed left-sided facial numbness followed by development of left-sided shock-like pain and then involuntary and repetitive movements of the jaw-closing muscles. Jaw muscle contractions were episodic, interfered with chewing and talking, and led to frequent tongue biting. Individual spasms varied from seconds to minutes and he reported that function in between episodes was normal, although his wife felt he spoke with reduced mouth opening. He sometimes awoke with a bloody tongue, suggesting that contractions oc

[Diagnosis and classification of headache and temporomandibular disorders, a new opportunity].

Patients with orofacial pains are generally treated by physicians. A small number of patients are treated for pain in the temporomandibular joint, the masticatory and the neck muscles, by dentists and orofacial surgeons. Among half of the patients being treated in neurological headache clinics, the temporomandibular joint and the masticatory muscles are the source of the pain. In order to achieve better research and a classification, the International Headache Society, consisting largely of neurologists, developed a classification system. A comparable development occurred among oral health spe

A motor function for the DEAD-box RNA helicase, Gemin3, in Drosophila.

The survival motor neuron (SMN) protein, the determining factor for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), is complexed with a group of proteins in human cells. Gemin3 is the only RNA helicase in the SMN complex. Here, we report the identification of Drosophila melanogaster Gemin3 and investigate its function in vivo. Like in vertebrates, Gemin3 physically interacts with SMN in Drosophila. Loss of function of gemin3 results in lethality at larval and/or prepupal stages. Before they die, gemin3 mutant larvae exhibit declined mobility and expanded neuromuscular junctions. Expression of a dominant-negati

[The etiology and pathogenesis of infantile pyloric stenosis].

As it is known, pyloric stenosis among newborns and infants represents a high or complete obturation caused by stomach circular muscles hypertrophy. This disease is widely spread in the world. According to the reference data, the prevalence of this disease is about one per 200-300 newborns. Despite of the many surveys and investigations, ethiopathogenesis of pylorostenosis remains the issue of debates. Some of the authors consider pyloric stenosis as the innate defect of evolution, while others think that the enlargement of pylorus circular muscles is caused by working hypertrophy. According t

Clinical case of the month. 3-year-old boy presenting with a hand rash. Juvenile dermatomyositis.

Of the diseases within the spectrum of the juvenile idiopathic inflammatory myopathies, juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) is the most common. As the name implies, JDM affects the muscles and skin most commonly, but can involve other organ systems as well. Dermatologic manifestations often precede other signs and symptoms by months or even years and frequently are the primary reason the patient seeks medical attention. In the case presented here, a 3-year-old boy initially developed a hand rash that brought him to his primary care physician. By the time muscle weakness had developed, the patient h

The receptor tyrosine kinase, Cek8, is transiently expressed on subtypes of motoneurons in the spinal cord during development.

Receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) play important roles in cellular proliferation, differentiation, and survival. We performed reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reactions (RT-PCR) from enriched embryonic day 5 (E5) chick motoneurons by panning to identify RTKs involved in the early development of motoneuron. In situ hybridization revealed that Cek8, a member of the eph family, was specifically expressed on motoneurons at the brachial and lumbar segments of the spinal cord which innervate limb muscles, and disappeared after the naturally occurring cell death period (E6-E11).
