An atypical case of chronic equine bronchopulmonary aspergillosis with an unusual hyphal morphology was diagnosed in a horse with Cushing's syndrome. Because of the hyphal localization in chronic ectatic bronchi and bronchioles, and juxtabronchiolar processes, the observed type of aspergillosis is similar to 'saprophytic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis' or 'semi-invasive pulmonary aspergillosis' in humans. The aetiological diagnosis of aspergillosis was accomplished by the application of a panel of monospecific polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies in immunohistochemical techniques.

A 50-year-old gardener with a 3-year history of pemphigus vulgaris and steroid-induced diabetes complained of various papulonodular lesions on the left elbow. Blastomyces dermatitidis yeast-phase antigens (killed cell, KWY; lysate, Lys; and filtrate, Fil) from canine isolate T-58 were compared with respect to the induction and detection of cellular immune responses in mice. Of 1400 pupils from two public primary schools in Ekpoma, Edo State, Nigeria, who were screened for dermatophyte infection, 188 (13.4%) were infected. The causative agents isolated included Microsporum audouinii in 88 (46.8%), Trichophyton mentagrophytes in 48 (25.5%), T. rubrum in 40 (21.3%), T. tonsurans in four (2.1%) and Epidermophyton floccosum in eight (4.3%). There were significant differences in the rate of infection between male and female schoolchildren as well as between children from different socioeconomic backgrounds.

The present report shows the efficacy of ajoene, a garlic-derived organic trisulphur, for short-term therapy of tinea pedis. The use of ajoene as a 0.4% (w/w) cream resulted in complete clinical and mycological cure in 27 of 34 patients (79%) after 7 days of treatment. The remaining seven patients (21%) achieved complete cure after seven additional days of treatment. All patients were evaluated for recurrence of mycotic infections 90 days after the end of treatment, yielding negative cultures for fungus. These results show that ajoene is an alternative, efficient and low-cost antimycotic drug

In a retrospective analysis, 79 allogeneic bone marrow recipients treated with AmBisome prophylactically or because of proven or suspected invasive fungal infection (IFI) were evaluated in 92 episodes. The median duration of treatment was 14 (range 1-112) days. The mean maximum dose given was 1.64 +/- 0.8 mg kg-1 day-1 and the mean total dose was 1.29 +/- 2.28 g. 67 women with chronic recurrent or persistent vaginal candidosis between 5-79 years of age were seen in our outdoor department. In 34 cases, yeasts could be isolated in a vaginal swab taken at the first consultation. On average the patients reported 5 episodes per year during the last years. Total cellular DNA was extracted from 18 isolates of Trichophyton mentagrophytes and six isolates of unidentified Trichophyton species taken from tinea corporis, tinea cruris and tinea pedis patients by a minipreparation method. Between 1.5% and 2.5% of the population in Karonga District, northern Malawi (Africa), were diagnosed as having tinea faciei, corporis, inguinalis or cruris in the course of a total population survey carried out between 1987 and 1989. With regard to the relative frequency distribution of dermatophytes, the main findings were the rarity of Trichophyton rubrum (around 1%) and the predominance of Microsporum audouinii (57%) in this part of Africa. In the genital area Epidermophyton floccosum was the most common isolate (56%).

The morphological, cultural and biochemical characteristics of 80 M. pachydermatis strains isolated from cases of canine otitis externa were studied. Microscopically, the strains could be subdivided into two phenotypes. Forty AIDS patients suffering from fluconazole-resistant oropharyngeal candidosis were treated with oral itraconazole solution (200-800 mg/day). In 39/49 patients the disease could be initially cured or significantly improved. In contrast to the good clinical results, however, only in six patients a yeast count reduction was observed, and in four patients unchanged high yeast counts persisted. A 62-year-old woman with sarcoidosis II, status post systemic steroid treatment, developed an inflammatory, infiltrative skin lesion in the area of a traumatic haematoma of the right forearm. The clinical appearance at first corresponded to bullous erysipelas. Antibiotic therapy, which was instituted immediately, proved to be ineffective. A microbiological swab revealed infection with Cryptococcus neoformans. A systemic cryptococcosis could be excluded. Therapy with 200 mg itraconazole twice daily resulted in a prompt improvement.

Blastomyces dermatitidis yeast lysate antigen (T-58, dog isolate) fractions prepared using the Rotofor preparative isoelectric focusing (IEF) cell (Bio-Rad) were compared with B. dermatitidis yeast lysate and filtrate reagents with respect to the detection of antibodies in sera from dogs with blastomycosis, histoplasmosis, coccidioidomycosis, cryptococcosis and aspergillosis. Dermatophytes are usually isolated from house dust by using actidione-chloramphenicol Sabouraud glucose medium (ACS medium). We have prepared a new medium, 5FC medium, by adding gentamicin sulphate (GS) and 5-fluorocytosine (5FC) to ACS medium to achieve more efficient isolation of dermatophytes from house dust. 5FC medium was more effective in isolating dermatophytes than ACS medium or ACS medium supplemented with GS alone.
