Symptoms intuitively associated with wind turbine infrasound.

In many countries, a certain proportion of individuals living in the vicinity of wind power areas have reported symptoms that they have intuitively associated with infrasound from wind turbines. While the reason for these symptoms remains under debate, this is the first study to describe the phenomenon by assessing the prevalence and severity of these wind turbine infrasound related symptoms as well as factors associated with being symptomatic. Four wind power areas in Finland assessed to have the most problems intuitively associated with wind turbine infrasound were selected for the study. Th

Cochlear synaptopathy: new findings in animal and human research.

In animal models, prolonged exposure (2 h) to high-level noise causes an irreparable damage to the synapses between the inner hair cells and auditory nerve fibers within the cochlea. Nevertheless, this injury does not necessarily alter the hearing threshold. Similar findings have been observed as part of typical aging in animals. This type of cochlear synaptopathy, popularly called "hidden hearing loss," has been a significant issue in neuroscience research and clinical audiology scientists. The results obtained in different investigations are inconclusive in their diagnosis and suggest new st

Identification of Al13 on the Colloid Surface Using Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy.

Al13 is the most active polymeric Al species responsible for coagulation at the solid-liquid interface, whereas the detection techniques for Al13 at the interface are currently limited. In this study, for the first time, the identification of Al13 on the silicon dioxide-based colloid surface was realized by using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), which is an ideal surface method sensitive for single-molecule detection. The high purity Al13 salts were prepared by an electrolysis procedure followed by precipitation or metathesis. Al13-Cln was determined to be feasible for the Raman detec

Exposure to seismic air gun signals causes physiological harm and alters behavior in the scallop Pecten fumatus.

Seismic surveys map the seabed using intense, low-frequency sound signals that penetrate kilometers into the Earth's crust. Little is known regarding how invertebrates, including economically and ecologically important bivalves, are affected by exposure to seismic signals. In a series of field-based experiments, we investigate the impact of exposure to seismic surveys on scallops, using measurements of physiological and behavioral parameters to determine whether exposure may cause mass mortality or result in other sublethal effects. Exposure to seismic signals was found to significantly increa

A compact representation for the auditory full-range response and its fast denoising using an image filter based on the Radon transform.

The Auditory Brainstem, Middle-Latency and Late Responses, a class of event-related potentials (ERPs), are of considerable interest in neuroscience research as robust neural correlates of different processing stages along the auditory pathway. While most research to date centers around one of the responses at a time for practical reasons, recent efforts indicate a paradigm shift towards acquiring them together, enabling the simultaneous monitoring of all auditory processing stages from the brainstem to the cortex. In this paper, we introduce a compact representation for this Auditory Full-Rang

Effects of Hatchery Rearing on the Structure and Function of Salmonid Mechanosensory Systems.

This paper reviews recent studies on the effects of hatchery rearing on the auditory and lateral line systems of salmonid fishes. Major conclusions are that (1) hatchery-reared juveniles exhibit abnormal lateral line morphology (relative to wild-origin conspecifics), suggesting that the hatchery environment affects lateral line structure, perhaps due to differences in the hydrodynamic conditions of hatcheries versus natural rearing environments, and (2) hatchery-reared salmonids have a high proportion of abnormal otoliths, a condition associated with reduced auditory sensitivity and suggestive

Exposure of fish to high-intensity sonar does not induce acute pathology.

This study investigated immediate effects of intense sound exposure associated with low-frequency (170-320 Hz) or with mid-frequency (2.8-3.8 kHz) sonars on caged rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus and hybrid sunfish Lepomis sp. in Seneca Lake, New York, U.S.A. This study focused on potential effects on inner ear tissues using scanning electron microscopy and on non-auditory tissues using gross and histopathology. Fishes were exposed to low-frequency sounds for 324 or 628 s with a received peak signal level of 193 dB re 1 microPa (root mean square, rms) or t

The differential vulnerability of the inner ear end-organs to several external factors.

In a number of recently conducted animal studies, the effect of various external factors such as ototoxic substances, different types of noise and systemic disease on the different end-organs of the inner ear has been investigated. These studies are distinguished by the use of short latency vestibular evoked potentials (VsEPs) (to both linear and angular acceleration), an objective method for directly assessing the function of the different vestibular end-organs. In addition, the well known auditory brainstem response (ABR) was used to assess cochlear function. The studies are reviewed and it

[Evaluation of a linear TEOAE protocol in hearing screening of neonates: feasibility study].

The audiological screening of newborns based on recording TEOAEs--the expression of anatomical-functional integrity of the cochlea--has unanimously gained importance. The prevalence of severe of genetic or congenital hearing loss in the healthy infant population and in the population at risk for audiological disorders, as well as the consequent psycholinguist and socialization problems such children have to deal with, have led the authors to set up a preliminary protocol for the audiological screening of neonates. The purpose of this protocol is to improve the feasibility of applying such a pr

["The cochlear amplifier". A crucial component of the hearing mechanism].

The function of the normal hearing organ; as reflected in electrophysiological recordings from the auditory nerve, is characterised by high sensitivity, fine frequency selectivity (tuning), and the presence of non-linearities. These characteristics are already manifest prior to the neural responses, however, and have now been observed in the mechanics of the cochlea in recordings from the organ itself. Cochlear mechanics are linked to the vulnerable 'cochlear amplifier' and the motile capacity of the sensory outer hair cells. Exposure to intense sound or ototoxic drugs may damage the outer hai

[Acoustic trauma from firearms: study of auditory function].

This article deals with the shift in audiometric tracings brought about by the discharge of firearms (acute acoustic trauma). The study included 60 subjects with normal hearing, between 18 and 20 years of age. Each individual shot 25 bullets in about 5 minutes, at an intensity level calculated at 163 dB. None of them related antecedents of sensorineural deafness. The audiometric examinations were performed as follows: the first one prior to the experiment, the second immediately after the series of shots, and others 8 and 40 hours later. These are the conclusions drawn out by the AA.: the most

Diazepam and muscimol blockade of the gastrointestinal motor disturbances induced by acoustic stress in dogs.

The influence of various drugs on the gastric motor inhibition induced by acoustic stress (AS) was investigated in fasted dogs fitted with strain-gauge transducers implanted on the antrum and proximal jejunum at 10 and 80 cm from the pylorus respectively. Started 40-50 min after the last gastric migrating motor complex (MMC), a 1 h acoustic stress delayed by 75% the occurrence of the next gastric but not jejunal MMC and was associated with a 4-fold increase in plasma cortisol. This AS-induced inhibition of the gastric MMC cycle was abolished after previous administration of diazepam (0.2 and 0

The effects of audiogenic stress on the growth of long bones in the laboratory rat (Rattus norvegicus).

It has been demonstrated that experimentally induced cold stress produces a stunting effect in the limbs of rodents. Such an effect has also been reported for the dentition and limbs in response to other stressors (heat, cold). Recent research into the effects of various stressors on the magnitude of fluctuating dental asymmetry demonstrated that general stress increases the magnitude of fluctuating dental asymmetry in experimental animals. However, no increase in the magnitude of fluctuating asymmetry of limb length was reported as a response of general stress. In the light of such studies th

Cell DiffErential Expression by Pooling (CellDEEP) highlights issues in differential gene expression in scRNA-seq.

Accurate identification of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in single-cell RNA sequencing data remains challenging. Single-cell-specific statistical models often report large numbers of candidate genes but can exhibit inflated false positive rates, whereas pseudobulk approaches improve false discovery control at the cost of reduced sensitivity. To overcome the noise and bias that other tools have, and allow the user to have more control of the DEG process, we present CellDEEP, which uses a cell aggregation (metacell) approach. This tool provides a framework for flexible selection of pooli

Improved Retinex model for enhancement and denoising of fringe patterns with non-uniform illumination.

To address phase demodulation challenges in electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI) fringe patterns from non-uniform illumination and heavy noise in dark regions, an improved Retinex-based denoising algorithm is proposed. First, nonlinear gamma correction is applied to the hue, saturation, and value (HSV) value channel to adaptively compress the dynamic range and improve dark-area visibility. Next, block-matching and 3D filtering (BM3D) denoises the reflectance component, while a fractional-order directional-total variation (TV) term, solved in the fast Fourier transform (FFT) domain,

MDRSGAN : Multi-Scale Deep Residual Shrinkage Generative Adversarial Network for Medical Image Enhancement.

High quality medical images are the foundation of clinical diagnosis and treatment, but their quality may decrease due to imaging noise, artifacts, and uneven lighting. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel Multi-scale Deep Residual Shrinkage Generative Adversarial Network (MDRSGAN) for non paired medical image enhancement. Its core innovations include: (1) Adopting a customized generator with learnable channel shared soft threshold (DRSN-CS), which can achieve hierarchical feature extraction and adaptive noise suppression; (2) Combining dual core discriminator to ensure global st
