Preventing the onset of diabetes with precision delivery of mesenchymal stem cells to the pancreas in a preclinical model.

BACKGROUND: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) represent a promising regenerative therapy associated with anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and pro-proliferative properties. Despite their significant potential for treating diabetes, the clinical application of MSCs has been hindered mainly due to the low number of intravenously (IV) injected cells that successfully reach the pancreas. METHODS: In this study, we assessed the protective potential of adipose tissue-derived MSCs (AD-MSCs) in preventing the development of diabetes using a streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rat model. AD-MSCs were a

Vegfr3 activation of Pkd2l1+ CSF-cNs triggers the neural stem cell response in spinal cord injury.

Activating adult neural stem cells (NSCs) located within the spinal cord niche is considered a promising therapeutic approach for treating spinal cord injury (SCI). Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-contacting neurons expressing Pkd2l1 exhibit phenotypic and molecular traits similar to those of adult NSCs. However, the mechanism responsible for regulating the activation of Pkd2l1+ CSF-cNs still needs to be discovered. This research demonstrated that Pkd2l1+ CSF-cNs have a high concentration of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 3 (Vegfr3) and that SCI results in elevated Vegfr3 levels. The ov

The efficacy of antenatal Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for antenatal and postnatal depression: A PRISMA based systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Considerable research has assessed the effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for perinatal depression, however limited attention has been paid to its effectiveness when delivered during pregnancy. The primary aim of this review was to review evidence of the efficacy of CBT interventions delivered antenatally to treat symptoms of depression in women during the antenatal and postnatal periods. The review's secondary aim was to evaluate potential moderators of treatment outcome. METHODS: Electronic Databases; CINAHL, PsycINFO, Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science were s

Comparative Genomic Analysis of 66 Bacteriophages Infecting Morganella morganii Strains.

Bacteriophages are viruses that specifically target bacteria and play a crucial role in influencing bacterial evolution and the transmission of antibiotic resistance. In this study, we explored the genomic profiles of 66 bacteriophages that infect Morganella morganii, an opportunistic pathogen associated with difficult-to-treat nosocomial and urinary tract infections. Our findings highlight the extraordinary diversity within this phage population, reflected in their genomic features, evolutionary relationships, and potential contributions to bacterial pathogenicity. The 66 phage genomes exhibi

Surgical predictors of osteoradionecrosis in irradiated head and neck cancer patients: Jaw resection increases risk whereas neck dissection does not.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigated the impact of jaw resection (JR) and neck dissection (ND) on the incidence of jaw osteoradionecrosis (JORN) in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) who underwent head and neck radiotherapy (HNR) involving the jawbone with/without ablative surgery. Evidence on this association remains scarce. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study examined irradiated HNC patients treated at a German university hospital between 2007 and 2022, with follow-up until December 2024. The predictor variables were JR and ND, with JORN as the main outcome. Appropriate s

Intratumoral delivery of PD-1/PD-L1 and CTLA-4 inhibitors for recurrent/refractory solid tumors: a proof-of-concept treatment strategy.

BACKGROUND: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are a leading immunotherapy. However, their application has not universally translated into significant benefits. A substantial number of patients either show resistance or relapse post-initial response, which emphasizes the need for more sophisticated therapeutic approaches. The drug combination is one promising route. The cancer-immunity cycle reveals the anti-tumor immune-related rate limiting steps of tumors. Theoretically, focusing on different phases of the cancer-immunity cycle can enhance therapeutic results. However, combination therapy

Management of Relapsing Catatonia After Lorazepam Discontinuation: A Systematic Review of Published Case Reports.

BACKGROUND: Lorazepam is the mainstay of pharmacological treatment of catatonia. It is recommended that lorazepam, when effective, be tapered and gradually stopped depending upon maintenance of clinical improvement. This recommendation is not supported by any controlled studies. There are case reports on relapses of catatonia while tapering lorazepam; these patients required long-term maintenance treatment for sustained symptomatic management. OBJECTIVE: This is a review of published literature focusing on relapse of catatonia following lorazepam discontinuation after maintenance treatment.

Formulation development, characterization and evaluation of nanoemulsions containing Moringa oleifera seed proteins as biocoagulant for water purification.

The availability and supply of potable water remains elusive especially in low-income economies with attendant life-threatening health risks. Moringa oleifera seed proteins have been reported to possess water purification activity; thus, there is a need to prepare the proteins in a useable, sustainable, and readily acceptable manner through nanotechnology. This work is aimed at developing, characterizing, and evaluating nanoemulsions loaded with proteins extracted from M. oleifera seeds for water purification. Various batches of nanoemulsions were formulated by spontaneous emulsification and t

Revisiting strategies to target ABC transporter-mediated drug resistance in CNS cancer.

A significant number of anticancer drugs fail to treat primary and metastatic brain tumors primarily because of the complex blood-brain barrier (BBB) and overexpression of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, which decrease drug penetration into the central nervous system and ultimately into tumors. It is noteworthy that the ABC transporters, ABCB1 [known as P-glycoprotein (P-gp)] and ABCG2 [known as breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP)], are overexpressed in brain tumors, including common gliomas. The co-presence of these transporters may negate the inhibition of either transporter, pa

A value-based evaluation of cefazolin and vancomycin for prosthetic joint infection prophylaxis in total hip arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: The most cost-effective intravenous antibiotic prophylaxis for preventing prosthetic joint infection (PJI) in total hip arthroplasty (THA) has been a matter of debate. The aim of this study was to compare the cost differential between cefazolin and vancomycin as prophylactic options with a particular focus on costs associated with PJI management. METHODS: Using previously published data on PJI rates associated with cefazolin and vancomycin, we modelled the cost of each prophylactic option. This model included unit prices for each drug obtained from our hospital's pharmacy service,
