Intrauterine effects of electromagnetic fields--(low frequency, mid-frequency RF, and microwave): review of epidemiologic studies.

Electromagnetic radiations are named according to frequency or to wavelength (which is inversely proportional to frequency) and create electromagnetic fields (EMFs). Frequencies widely vary according to sources: high-voltage power lines, electrically heated beds, MRI, VDTs, microwave ovens, satellite, and radio/TV transmissions or cellular phone transmitters/receivers. Public concern has increased about the potential health effects of EMFs. There are arguments in favour of EMFs being biologically active, but no mechanism has been identified that explains the link between EMFs and bioeffects. H

Urinary 1-hydroxypyrene and other PAH metabolites as biomarkers of exposure to environmental PAH in air particulate matter.

Humans are exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from occupational, environmental, medicinal and dietary sources. PAH metabolites in human urine can be used as biomarkers of internal dose to assess recent exposure to PAHs. The most widely used urinary PAH metabolites are 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP) or 1-hydroxypyrene-O-glucuronide (1-OHP-gluc), the major form of 1-OHP in human urine, because of their relatively high concentration and prevalence in urine and their relative ease of measurement. Elevated levels of 1-OHP or 1-OHP-gluc have been demonstrated in smokers, in patients receivi

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon metabolites in urine as biomarkers of exposure and effect.

Humans are exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from various occupational, environmental, medicinal, and dietary sources. PAH metabolites in human urine can be used as biomarkers of internal dose to assess recent exposure to PAHs. PAH metabolites that have been detected in human urine include 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP), 1-hydroxypyrene-O-glucuronide (1-OHP-gluc), 3-hydroxybenzo[a]pyrene, 7,8,9,10-tetrahydroxy-7,8,9, 10-tetrahydrobenzo[a]pyrene, and a number of other hydroxylated PAHs. The most widely used of these is 1-OHP-gluc, the major form of 1-OHP in human urine, by virtue of i

Patient experiences and perspectives of health service access for carpal tunnel syndrome in Aotearoa New Zealand: a normalisation process theory-informed qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Early access to care for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) can avoid higher rates of surgery and permanent harm yet is often delayed, particularly for populations more likely to underutilise care. OBJECTIVE: We sought to explore patient experiences and perspectives of health service access for CTS to inform an equity-focussed co-design of a health service for improving early care access. METHODS: In this Normalisation Process Theory (NPT)-informed qualitative study we conducted semistructured in-depth interviews with 19 adults with experience of CTS. Recruitment prioritised New Zealan

Health and immunology study following exposure to toxigenic fungi (Stachybotrys chartarum) in a water-damaged office environment.

There is growing concern about adverse health effects of fungal bio-aerosols on occupants of water-damaged buildings. Accidental, occupational exposure in a nonagricultural setting has not been investigated using modern immunological laboratory tests. The objective of this study was to evaluate the health status of office workers after exposure to fungal bio-aerosols, especially Stachybotrys chartarum (atra) (S. chartarum) and its toxigenic metabolites (satratoxins), and to study laboratory parameters or biomarkers related to allergic or toxic human health effects. Exposure characterization an

Risk Assessment in the Working Environment in Estonia.

The first step to chart hazards in the working environment in Estonia (labour force: 0.65 million) was taken by the National Board of Health Protection in the beginning of 1996. The existing chemical, physical, and biological agents in the working environment were investigated with the help of local health inspectors in all counties. An identification of hazards and workers at risk was carried out. The results of the analysis showed that 16% of Estonian industrial workers are exposed to different hazards: 20,000 persons are exposed to noise, 11,000 are working in the conditions of vibration, 1

Proactive Resilience Programmes for Improving Resilience and Psychological Adaptation in Employees in High-Risk Occupations: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Promoting positive mental health is important due to its beneficial influence on not only educational attainment, productivity, employment and earnings, but also social cohesion, engagement, and quality of life. Individuals employed in occupations associated with high stress levels and extreme conditions (such as the police, fire and rescue services, health and social services, and the military) commonly report stress-related mental health conditions arising from their exposure to multiple traumas. Thus, especially for individuals employed in occupations associated with high stress

Long-term whiplash-associated disorders, sickness absence, and disability pension following rear-end car crashes and associations with whiplash protection systems: a longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) are common injuries from car crashes, with a significant proportion leading to permanent medical impairment (PMI), especially among women and in rear-end impacts. While previous research has shown mixed results regarding work incapacity following WAD, severe cases may lead to long-term health and functional consequences. This study aimed to examine the occurrence of long-term WAD – based on insurance compensation, future PMI, and work incapacity (sickness absence (SA) and disability pension (DP)) among front seat occupants in rear-end crashes, an
