PURPOSE: To assess the correlation between dry eye and pterygium.
METHODS: Tear breakup time (BUT), Schirmer test with/without anesthesia and tear function index were evaluated in both eyes of patients with unilateral pterygium.
RESULTS: Tear BUT, was shortened significantly in the eye with pterygium. The Schirmer test with anesthesia was shortened and the tear function index was decreased in the eye with pterygium with marginal significance.
CONCLUSION: There is a correlation between pterygium formation and shortened BUT. Unstable tear film may contribute to the initiation of pterygium.

Acquired tumours of the nonpigmented ciliary body epithelium are rare. We present herein a case of low-grade adenocarcinoma in order to stress the problems related to the clinical diagnosis. The tumour in our case was circumscribed, localised on the ciliary body, and nonpigmented. The height of the tumour, measured with ultrasound biomicroscopy, was 3.5 mm. Central and peripheral (superior, inferior, nasal, and temporal) corneal thickness was measured in patients with and without keratoconus using ultrasonic pachometry. In 28 normal eyes (14 patients) mean central corneal thickness (CCT) was 0.56 +/- 0.02 mm and the mean difference in thickness between the mean peripheral corneal thickness (PCT) and CCT was 0.24 mm. A simple method for inflicting corneal foreign body injuries on bovine eyes is described and illustrated. The subsequent use of these eyes for teaching corneal and rust-ring removal is demonstrated. This method is suitable for instruction of large numbers of students and could be included in an undergraduate curriculum.

In addition to posing a threat to the patient's life, these tumors can cause severe visual loss or blindness. Surgical techniques of iridocyclectomy, iridochoroidectomy, eye wall resection, eye wall biopsy, and ab interno retinochoridectomy are described. Surgical approaches to uveal neoplasms offer a new alternative for management of these disorders. Uveal and retinal biopsy expand our knowledge of pathological processes involved in tapetoretinal degeneration and uveitides.
