Of the single-suture craniosynostoses, unicoronal synostosis (UCS) is widely acknowledged to represent the most varied and complex set of craniofacial deformities. This is attributed to the endocranial base being affected along with the coronal suture. This deformity may present with both coronal and frontosphenoidal synostosis and has been associated with elevated intracranial pressure; brain morphological abnormalities; vertical dystopia; ambylopia; malformations of the forehead, orbit, midface, and mandible; and behavioral, cognitive, and speech abnormalities. It is the variable structural

A 3-year 10-month-old child initially developed locally recurrent cutaneous eruptions within the first 2 weeks after sustaining a jellyfish sting to her lower extremities. After 5 asymptomatic weeks, she developed unilateral orbital inflammation that did not respond to systemic antibiotics, antihistamines, or steroids. Imaging revealed a rapidly growing mass of the right lacrimal gland. Urgent anterior orbitotomy was performed and the lacrimal gland was biopsied. Histopathologic diagnosis revealed sclerosing dacryodenitis consistent with orbital inflammatory syndrome and/or an immune response

OBJECTIVE: To present the case of a leptomeningeal cyst involving the orbital roof in an adult.
DESIGN: Case report and literature review.
SETTING: Tertiary referral center.
SUMMARY: A 47-year-old female with a remote history of a skull fracture at 3 years of age presented with increasing headaches and retro-orbital pain. A computed tomogram and magnetic resonance image revealed a leptomeningeal cyst of the orbital roof.
RESULTS: Only one previous leptomeningeal cyst of the orbital roof has been reported in an adult. Surgical excision of the lesion was performed and follow-up imaging 18 mo

The full clinical manifestations of complications due to odontogenic foci are rarely seen in daily dental practice and can take a clinically foudroyant course of development in young people owing to anatomic conditions, as demonstrated in this clinical case in a 12-year-old girl. Endodontic treatment of the first right upper molar was started owing to increasing toothache and swelling of fossa canina and the periorbital region. During the course of treatment, the patient exhibited an acute increase in orbital inflammation, which required immediate surgical intervention with postsurgical intrav

Young diabetics can sometimes have difficulty with insulin compliance for various reasons. This can be exacerbated if associated with body dysmorphic disorder or other eating disorders. The manipulation of insulin to lose weight can have devastating consequences. The authors describe a fatal case of rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis secondary to insulin manipulation for the purpose of weight loss.

Fibro-osseous lesions of the face and paranasal sinuses are relatively uncommon. These lesions have overlapping clinical, radiologic and pathologic features causing difficulty in diagnosis. Neoplastic fibro-osseous paranasal sinus lesions can be benign or malignant. The benign fibro-osseous lesions described are: ossifying fibroma (and its histologic variants) and fibrous dysplasia. The variants of ossifying fibroma differ in the nature of calcified material (i.e. cementum versus bone), in the location of the lesion (oral versus paranasal sinus or orbital), other morphologic variations (presen

We report a case of dentigerous cyst of the maxilla and maxillary sinus that caused the ectopic displacement of an unerupted tooth into the orbital rim and floor. After an incisional biopsy, marsupialization of the lesion promoted its involution and stimulated osteogenesis. This in turn simplified the surgical enucleation of the specimen and removal of the unerupted tooth without the excessive loss of the bony contours of the maxilla.

OBJECTIVE: High-resolution MRI (HR-MRI) is a powerful non-invasive tool that provides images of higher spatial resolution and enables visualization of tissues previously unidentified with conventional techniques. The utilization of HR-MRI in the eye and orbit is essential due to the minute structure with great tissue diversity. The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of a novel surface coil and to explore the potential of this approach to depict normal anatomy.
METHODS: MR images were acquired using a commonly available 1.5T scanner. Ten normal volunteers were imaged using a surfa

Orbital Cellulitis is a dreaded ophthalmologic disease. It may destroy vision and the eye and may even become life threatening. Often visual loss is the result of exposure and subsequent destruction of ocular tissue commonly the cornea and the uvea. We report a case of combined central retinal artery and vein occlusion complicating orbital cellulitis in a 35 year old patient who was 37 weeks pregnant resulting in loss of vision in the affected eye. There have been few case reports of this type of complication of orbital cellulitis.

The infection of the orbita and ocular tissues can result in severe local and systemic complications. We aimed to determine the predisposing factors for preseptal and orbital cellulitis, the clinical and routine laboratory differences between orbital and preseptal cellulitis, and the change in the spectrum of the pathogens and the antibiotics used in the last 10 years. One hundred thirty-nine patients, hospitalized in Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Children's Hospital between 1 January 1990 and 31 December 2003 with diagnosis ofperiorbital or orbital cellulitis, were reviewed retrosp

BACKGROUND: Tear trough deformity is a primary complaint in those who believe it causes an old and tired appearance. This deformity naturally increases with aging, but there are younger people that also complain about the appearance of their lower eyelid area. Recently, many authors have reported good results treating this deformity with transconjunctival orbital fat repositioning. Although Kawamoto has pointed out a possible need for a procedure modification in Asians with a brachycephalic face, thus far, there have been no reports evaluating such procedures in Asians.
OBJECTIVE: In November

PURPOSE: Orbital lymphangioma is a rare vascular malformation; it is a benign but severe anomaly because of its infiltrative, diffuse, and hemorrhagic nature, and its high morbidity rate. Surgical resection is a real challenge on account of the intricate architecture of the lesion. The authors report their surgical experience concerning two cases of diffuse orbital lymphangioma whose diagnosis was established in adulthood and whose surgical treatment was successful.
CASE REPORTS: Two patients presented with adult orbital lymphangioma. Progression was slow during the first decade and then was

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop and assess the computer-assisted fabricated individual titanium mesh technique applied for reconstruction of fractured orbital walls to correct post-traumatic enophthalmus and diplopia.
METHODS: Twenty patients (12 males and 8 females) were included in this study. All of patients suffered from unilateral impure orbital fractures. Group A included 8 patients who were reconstructed for the fractured orbit with computer-assisted fabricated titanium mesh technique. Group B had 12 patients treated with traditional methods (titanium meshes in 2, autog

PURPOSE: Moderate-energy zygoma fractures result frequently in a posteromedially displaced bone fragment. Closed reduction using a force vector directed in an anterolateral direction frequently produces stable repair of these injuries. Exploration of the orbital floor (OF) is not routinely undertaken. However, as the zygoma forms a significant portion of the OF, realignment may create an unrecognized OF defect. Routine OF exploration may be unnecessary and carries the risks of eyelid malposition, scarring, and extraocular muscle injury. Our goal was to quantitatively describe the effect of zyg

PURPOSE: To investigate the drainage patterns of radiolabeled colloids of different sizes injected into the orbital cavity in an animal model.
METHODS: Twenty-one orbits of 11 rabbits were included in the study. In group 1, human serum macroaggregates with particle sizes of 10 to 100 microm, labeled with 10 mL of 1480 MBq (40 mCi) technetium pertechnetate Tc 99m (99mTc), were used. In group 2, human serum albumin colloidal particles with particle sizes of 50 to 80 nm, labeled with 5 mL of 740 MBq (20 mCi) 99mTc, were used. In group 3, colloidal tin with particle sizes of 300 to 600 nm, labele

INTRODUCTION: Meningocele of the optic nerve is a rare condition defined as dilatation of the optic nerve by spinal fluid not due to other pathology, classically presenting with headaches or progressive visual decline and usually follows a rapidly progressive course.
DISCUSSION: Surgical decompression is the standard treatment with improvement or arrest of progression in most cases. We describe a case of a child with multiple congenital anomalies including a left optic nerve meningocele that progressively expanded and caused displacement of the orbit laterally resulting in severe cosmetic def

Orbital emphysema following conjunctival tear in the absence of orbital wall fracture, caused by air under pressure is rare. Usually orbital emphysema is seen in facial trauma associated with damage to the adjacent paranasal sinuses or facial bones. To the best of our knowledge, there have been only eight reports of orbital emphysema following use of compressed air during industrial work. The air under pressure is pushed through the subconjunctival space into the subcutaneous and retrobulbar spaces. We present here a rare cause of orbital emphysema in a young man working with compressed air gu

Late enophthalmos is a well-known consequence of large orbital floor fractures. In rare cases, late enophthalmos can occur after direct trauma to the maxillary ostiomeatal complex and present as silent sinus syndrome (SSS). We report two cases of SSS manifesting as enophthalmos years after facial trauma. The first patient developed SSS 4 years after a minimally displaced orbital floor fracture. The second patient had progressive enophthalmos as a result of atelectasis of the maxillary sinus years after facial trauma and surgical repair of nasal fractures. There have been two prior reports of S
