Learning in repeated visual search.

Visual search (e.g., finding a specific object in an array of other objects) is performed most effectively when people are able to ignore distracting nontargets. In repeated search, however, incidental learning of object identities may facilitate performance. In three experiments, with over 1,100 participants, we examined the extent to which search could be facilitated by object memory and by memory for spatial layouts. Participants searched for new targets (real-world, nameable objects) embedded among repeated distractors. To make the task more challenging, some participants performed search

Response acquisition by humans with delayed reinforcement.

The present experiment examined whether a response class was acquired by humans with delayed reinforcement. Eight white circles were presented on a computer touch screen. If the undergraduates touched two of the eight circles in a specified sequence (i.e., touching first the upper-left circle then the bottom-left circle), then the touches initiated an unsignaled resetting delay culminating in point delivery. Participants experienced one of three different delays (0 s, 10 s, or 30 s). Rates of the target two-response sequence were higher with delayed reinforcement than with no reinforcement. Te

Experimental sleep fragmentation impairs spatial reference but not working memory in Fischer/Brown Norway rats.

Sleep fragmentation is a common symptom in sleep disorders and other medical complaints resulting in excessive daytime sleepiness. The present study seeks to explore the effects of sleep fragmentation on learning and memory in a spatial reference memory task and a spatial working memory (WM) task. Fischer/Brown Norway rats lived in custom treadmills designed to induce locomotor activity every 2 min throughout a 24-h period. Separate rats were either on a treadmill schedule that allowed for consolidated sleep or experienced no locomotor activation. Rats were tested in one of two water maze-base

Further considerations of visual cognitive neuroscience in aided AAC: the potential role of motion perception systems in maximizing design display.

Current augmentative and alternative communication technologies allow animation within visual symbol displays. Clinicians therefore have the option of incorporating motion-based effects into AAC displays. Yet there is no research in the field of AAC to guide this clinical decision-making, in terms of the number or types of animated symbols that would best suit specific communication needs. A great deal is known within the discipline of cognitive neuroscience about how humans perceive motion, however. In this paper we propose that the field of AAC might exploit these known principles of motion

Diagnostic sensitivity/specificity of preattentive vision tests in glaucoma.

PURPOSE: Damage to the nerve fiber layer or visual pathway might be expected to reduce the efficiency with which the visual system performs analysis of the ever-changing field of vision. The purpose of this article is to provide a further analysis of previously reported data (Loughman J, Davison P, Flitcroft I, Br J Ophthalmol 2007;91:1493-98.) to: (i) determine the sensitivity and specificity of a test of preattentive vision for glaucoma detection and (ii) provide a cutoff performance level that would serve to distinguish glaucoma in early cases. METHODS: Three groups of observers (glaucoma,

Sensitivity to object viewpoint and action instructions during search for targets in the lower visual field.

We contrasted visual search for targets presented in prototypical views and targets presented in nonprototypical views, when targets were defined by their names and when they were defined by the action that would normally be performed on them. The likelihood of the first fixation falling on the target was increased for prototypical-view targets falling in the lower visual field. When targets were defined by actions, the durations of fixations were reduced for targets in the lower field. The results are consistent with eye movements in search being affected by representations within the dorsal

Wheel-chair driving improvement following visuo-manual prism adaptation.

Prism adaptation has been used for several years to improve several aspects of unilateral neglect. Parameters ranging from the classical neuropsychological tests to mental imagery or to tactile extinction have been successfully ameliorated following a brief period of adaptation to wedge prisms shifting the visual field to the right. However the potential therapeutic implications of this technique depend on the investigation of more functional and ecological parameters. Here we describe a patient with left hemiplegia and unilateral neglect who was impaired during wheel-chair navigation in the c

Mental rotation of body parts and non-corporeal objects in patients with idiopathic cervical dystonia.

Mental rotation of body parts is performed through inner simulation of actual movements, and is likely to rely upon cortical and subcortical systems (e.g. motor and premotor areas and basal ganglia) involved in motor planning and execution. Studies indicate that sensory and motor deficits, such as for example pain, limb amputation or focal hand dystonia, bring about a specific impairment in mental rotation of the affected body parts. Here we explored the ability of patients affected by idiopathic cervical dystonia (CD) to mentally rotate affected (neck) and unaffected (hands and feet) body dis

Emergence of self and other in perception and action: an event-control approach.

The present paper analyzes the regularities referred to via the concept 'self.' This is important, for cognitive science traditionally models the self as a cognitive mediator between perceptual inputs and behavioral outputs. This leads to the assertion that the self causes action. Recent findings in social psychology indicate this is not the case and, as a consequence, certain cognitive scientists model the self as being epiphenomenal. In contrast, the present paper proposes an alternative approach (i.e., the event-control approach) that is based on recently discovered regularities between per

Clock drawing in developmental dyslexia.

Although developmental dyslexia is often defined as a language-based reading impairment not attributable to low intelligence or educational or socioeconomic limitations, the behavioral manifestations of dyslexia are not restricted to the realm of language. Functional brain imaging studies have shed light on physiological differences associated with poor reading both inside and outside the classical language areas of the brain. Concurrently, clinically useful tests that elicit these nonlinguistic deficits are few. Specifically, the integrity of the dorsal visual pathway, which predominantly pro

The role of visuospatial attention in developmental dyslexia: evidence from a rehabilitation study.

Shifting of visual attention induced by peripheral cues was studied in 24 children with specific reading disorder (SRD) or dyslexia and was compared with that of 19 normal readers by means of a covert orienting paradigm. This paradigm presents participants with valid, neutral and invalid spatial cues preceding the presentation of a target stimulus. As compared to normal readers, in SRD children the inhibition effect (i.e. the difference between neutral and invalid cues) was absent. The 24 SRD children were divided into two groups matched for age, IQ and reading ability to study the efficacy of

Optokinetic nystagmus, vection, and motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: Two current theories concerning the etiology of motion sickness (MS)-the eye movement hypothesis and sensory conflict theory-were evaluated under conditions that manipulated the degree of optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) and/or vection. METHOD: Eye movement and perceptual responses were elicited with whole field stimulation in a vertically striped rotating drum and modulated with fixation and/or a restriction of the field of view (FOV). Measures of OKN, vection, and MS were recorded under the various conditions. RESULTS: Both visual field restriction and/or fixation diminished circula

Aetiology of congenital and paediatric cataract in an Australian population.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Paediatric cataract is a major cause of childhood blindness. Several genes associated with congenital and paediatric cataracts have been identified. The aim was to determine the incidence of cataract in a population, the proportion of hereditary cataracts, the mode of inheritance, and the clinical presentation. METHODS: The Royal Children's Hospital and the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital have a referral base for almost all paediatric patients with cataracts in south eastern Australia. The database contains cases seen over the past 25 years. The medical histories of these

Is there a distortion of body projection in extracorporeal space in neglect patients?

Neglect patients often present with a rightward shift of the direction straight-ahead of body midline. We investigated whether directions ahead of other body parts were similarly shifted or were differentially affected. Right brain-damaged patients, with and without neglect, and normal subjects had to indicate by manual pointings, the directions straight-ahead of the navel, the nose, the left and right shoulders. In neglect patients, constant errors varied across directions with a decrease in magnitude from left to right, suggesting a compression of body projection in extracorporeal space. Mor

To see better to the left when looking more to the right: effects of gaze direction and frames of spatial coordinates in unilateral neglect.

Unilateral spatial neglect entails a failure to detect or respond to stimuli in the space opposite to a brain lesion. However, the contralesional hemispace can be determined by different frames of spatial coordinates, such as eyes-, head-, body-, or environment-centered coordinates. We observed 2 patients with a right hemisphere stroke whose left spatial neglect was modulated by distinct coordinates systems depending on the task. Four tasks were given in different conditions of central gaze and either the eyes or the head rotated 30 degrees to the right or 30 degrees to the left. While the 2 p

The relationship between language-processing and visual-processing deficits in developmental dyslexia.

Some research on developmental dyslexia focuses on linguistic abnormalities such as poor reading of nonwords or poor reading of exception words. Other research focuses on visual abnormalities such as poor performance on psychophysical tasks believed to assess the functioning of the magnocellular and parvocellular layers of the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN). Little is known about what the relationships are between these two types of abnormalities. We measured nonword reading, exception word reading, and performance with Ternus apparent movement displays (the perception of which is believed t

[Balint syndrome and associated disorders. Anamnesis--diagnosis--approaches to treatment].

Balint syndrome is a combination of symptoms including simultanagnosia, a disorder of spatial and object-based attention, disturbed spatial perception and representation, and optic ataxia resulting from bilateral parieto-occipital lesions. Fixation and ocular exploration of space are severely impaired, as are reading, writing, drawing and orientation as well as movement in space. Low-level visual impairments may be associated and difficult to evaluate but are not a necessary element of Balint syndrome. This review summarizes the relevant facts of the etiology, localization of lesions, and the

Spatial vision in the course of an insect's life.

Praying mantises are considered to be phylogenetically ancient insects with their roots in the palaeozoic Protoblattoidea. They have evolved two mechanisms for spatial vision: (a) estimating the distance to moving prey objects with the use of binocular disparity [Rossel, 1983] and (b) estimating the distance to stationary target objects with motion parallax produced by head movements [Poteser and Kral, 1995]. There is no doubt that the ability to use both visual cues is congenital, but the degree to which either mechanism is developed and its significance to the individual depends to some exte

A belongingness principle of motion perception.

Four experiments are reported that investigated the role of the perceived coplanarity of a moving target with respect to a frame of reference in the third dimension on the perceived path of that target. When a target dot and small moving frame appeared coplanar, the dot's perceived trajectory was governed entirely by its changing position relative to the moving frame. However, when the target and a large stationary frame appeared in a different plane than the small moving frame, the motion of the dot was seen independently of the moving frame. The results support a belongingness principle of m
