Types and complications of femoral neck fractures in children.

This multicenter collaborative study was undertaken to review the types and complications of femoral neck fractures in children. It is a retrospective clinical and radiological review of 108 femoral neck fractures. Cases originated from four different pediatric hospitals. All the patients had plain radiographs. Fractures occurred at all ages (one day to 18 years), and 63% of the patients were boys. Forty-nine fractures were traumatic; 37 were pathologic, 19 were insufficiency fractures; and three were fatigue fractures. Unless the underlying bone was abnormal, significant high velocity trauma,

Investigation of the dilated urinary tract.

Dilatation of the urinary tract does not necessarily imply obstruction, and other factors may be operative: maldevelopment, infection, reflux, and polyuria. Obstruction of the urinary tract in intra-uterine life is associated with renal dysplasia: the original obstructive lesion may be transient but the consequent dysplasia and dilatation may be permanent. Routine antenatal ultrasound identifies a new population of infants with urinary tract dilatation, many of whom remain asymptomatic and would not otherwise have come to medical attention: the natural history and appropriate schedules of inve

[Simple and rapid method for the fractionation of red blood cells in sickle cell anemia].

The density of normal red blood cells increases during their 3-month life span. This characteristic has been used for many years to separate younger from older cells by centrifugation, allowing biochemical and physiological studies on the ageing process in red cells to be performed. The methods which have been proposed to date using discontinuous density gradients made of high density chemical compounds required high speed centrifugation of long duration. These gradients with pre-established density layers are well designed to separate red cells when their density varies over a small range as

Osteosarcoma of extragnathic craniofacial bones.

Osteosarcomas of extragnathic craniofacial bones--those bones of the skull excepting the jaw bones--are rare lesions, constituting fewer than 2% of all osteosarcomas. In our series of 21 patients (12 male and 9 female), the ages ranged from 6 to 77 years, and 10 patients were in the third or fourth decade of life. At least six patients had predisposing conditions: Paget's disease of bone in three and prior regional irradiation in three. Most of these tumors were high-grade lesions, and most were extensive when treated. There were 11 osteoblastic, 6 fibroblastic, and 1 small cell variant; 2 les

Transgenerationally inherited incisor aberration mediated by stress in two isolated populations of Microtus hartingi vole.

Environmental and social stress (SS) can alter phenotypic expression at both individual and population levels. We examined the effects of ancestral SS, imposed through forced polygyny, on reproductive success and maxillary incisor overgrowth in 2 isolated populations of Microtus hartingi vole: from Central Anatolia (CAP) and Eastern Rhodope (RP). In addition to ancestral SS, CAP voles were exposed to environmental stress during prenatal, lactation, and early-life periods. Under control conditions, the prevalence of incisor overgrowth was at a stable rate of ∼16.7% in RP and occurred very rarel

Endobronchial Extension of Metastatic Osteosarcoma Causing Central Airway Obstruction: A Case Report.

Metastatic osteosarcoma most commonly involves the lungs and typically presents as peripheral pulmonary nodules amenable to limited resection. Endobronchial extension of metastatic osteosarcoma resulting in critical central airway obstruction, however, is rare. We present a woman in her late 60s with a history of distal femoral osteosarcoma treated 15 years earlier who developed progressive respiratory symptoms initially treated as pneumonia. Imaging demonstrated a large right-sided endobronchial mass causing obstruction of the right mainstem bronchus and impending compromise of the left mains

GNSS Spoofer Localization with Counterfeit Clock Bias Observables in a Dynamic Scenario.

Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSSs) are widely used in daily life, and the popularity of GNSS-based applications has triggered concerns about the potential vulnerabilities of GNSS. One of the major threats is the spoofing signal, and localizing the spoofer enables the threat to be mitigated at its source. Most spoofer localization methods rely on a spatially distributed sensor network with accurate time synchronization requirements. Recent research has used a least-squares (LS) estimator to localize a static spoofer using clock bias or clock drift from a single antenna. In this paper,

Dopamine suppresses pathological retinal oscillations and enhances the signal-to-noise ratio.

Infantile nystagmus is a debilitating involuntary eye movement disorder often associated with retinal diseases such as congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB). The oscillating eye movements of infantile nystagmus come with reduced visual acuity and strongly impair quality of life. No cure exists for this condition. Previously, we demonstrated that nystagmus in the CSNB mouse model Nyxnob has a retinal cause. Specifically, we found that synchronized oscillations of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) are transmitted to the accessory optic system, triggering compensatory eye movements. The RGC os

Closed-Loop Recyclable Solid Polymer Electrolytes via Dynamic Lipoate Cross-Linking.

Growing demand for electrochemical energy storage has intensified concerns over battery end-of-life disposal, driving an urgent need for recyclable electrolyte materials. Here, we report a photo-curable, chemically recyclable solid polymer electrolyte platform built on a bio-derived difunctional cross-linker, poly(ethylene glycol) bis(lipoate) (PEG-LP2), prepared from naturally occurring α-lipoic acid. Visible-light-driven copolymerization of PEG-LP2 with poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate in the presence of an ionic liquid (BMITFSI, 45 wt%) yields flexible, ionically conductive membr

Dissected Thoracic Aorta Masked as Seizures: A Case Report.

Background: Aortic dissection (AoD) is a life-threatening medical emergency characterized by the separation of the layers of the aortic wall. The typical clinical presentation of AoD includes intense thoracic pain in the anterior chest or interscapular region, often described as migratory and tearing in nature. However, in rare cases, AoD can present without classic signs but with neurological symptoms, including seizures. Case Presentation: A 60-year-old patient experienced a sudden loss of consciousness followed by a tonic-clonic seizure and subsequently developed right-sided weakness. He ha

Cadmium Impairs Human GnRH Neuron Development: Mechanistic Insights into Reproductive Dysfunction.

There is increasing evidence that exposure to environmental toxicants may impact fertility, especially during critical windows of reproductive axis development. Hypothalamic gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons, essential for puberty onset and fertility, originate from the olfactory placode and migrate toward the hypothalamus during development, making them particularly vulnerable to environmental insults. Cadmium (Cd), a widespread heavy metal, is well known for its gonadotoxicity, but its impact on human hypothalamic neuron development remains unclear. Using human fetal GnRH neurobl

Extracellular Vesicles Drive Coagulopathy Across Hematologic Cancers.

Coagulopathies are common in hematological malignancies and can cause life-threatening bleeding or thrombosis. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), including exosomes, microvesicles, and apoptotic bodies, carry cargo that reflects their cellular origin. They frequently express tissue factor (TF) and expose phosphatidylserine (PS), which initiate and amplify coagulation and can also transport fibrinolytic mediators that modulate plasmin generation. Procoagulant EVs are commonly assessed using TF- and PS-dependent functional assays, global hemostasis tests such as overall hemostatic potential, and flow

The weight concerns scale in Australian adolescents: Factor structure, gender invariance, and screening utility.

Despite the increased incidence of disordered eating among adolescents and low help-seeking rates, there is currently a lack of evidence supporting use of screening tools for this population. The present study aimed to address this gap by examining the factor structure, gender invariance, and psychological correlates of the Weight Concerns Scale (WCS) in a large sample of Australian adolescents to evaluate its potential suitability as a screening tool. Participants (n = 1022) aged 12-17 (Mage = 14.73; SD = 1.55) were recruited from five public secondary schools in South Australia between May a

Latent transition of posttraumatic reactions' co-existent patterns in adolescents following a devastating flood: A longitudinal study.

Extant studies investigated co-existent patterns of post-traumatic reactions in adolescents following natural disasters and examined changes in these patterns over time. However, they focused exclusively on specific or non-specific reactions, or only on positive or negative reactions. To fill this gap, this study considered specific/non-specific and positive /negative valence in posttraumatic reactions, and then examined the latent patterns of post-traumatic stress disorder, post-traumatic growth, depression, and life satisfaction and further assessed changes in these patterns. Following a dev

Three Versus 6 Months of Adjuvant Oxaliplatin-Fluoropyrimidine Chemotherapy for Colorectal Cancer: Final Results of SCOT-An International, Randomized, Phase III, Noninferiority Trial.

Adjuvant chemotherapy for colorectal cancer (CRC) with oxaliplatin and fluoropyrimidine was traditionally given for 6 months but is associated with cumulative peripheral neuropathy. The SCOT study (ISRCTN59757862) was an international, randomized, phase III, noninferiority trial investigating treatment reduction from 6 to 3 months. It originally reported noninferior disease-free survival with reduced toxicity and improved quality of life for 3 months of treatment in 6,088 patients. Here, we report overall survival (OS) with 38 months of additional follow-up. Patients with high-risk stage II an

Activating Progressive Sn2+ Nucleation by Micellar Structure Electrolyte for Dead-Sn-Free Aqueous Batteries.

The instantaneous nucleation of Sn originating from the uncontrolled diffusion of Sn2+ ions typically forms large, electrochemically inactive "dead Sn" that severely constraints the plating/stripping reversibility of Sn anode for acidic aqueous batteries. Herein, nanoscale spatial confinement of Sn2+ ions is realized in SnSO4 electrolyte by strategically dictating spontaneous assembly of nanomicelles with amphipathic sulfolane. The as-constructed locally heterogeneous environment ensures the sustainable release of Sn2+ ions, which reprograms the nucleation manner from instantaneous to progress

Wearable Sleep Detection System Based on Piezoelectric Signals and Convolutional Neural Network Analysis.

Long-term and comfortable sleep monitoring is a core requirement for daily health management. However, existing sleep monitoring technologies fail to simultaneously achieve accurate sleep stage classification, wearing comfort, and direct monitoring of characteristic physiological signals. Here, we report a wearable sleep monitoring system (SMS) based on piezoelectric sensing and convolutional neural network (CNN) analysis. The system assesses sleep structure and quality by capturing characteristic eye movement signals and provides actionable recommendations for long-term sleep health managemen

SWM dataset: A large-scale annotated benchmark for Sclerotinia sclerotiorum object detection in white mold management.

Computer vision enables automated, accurate plant disease scouting, especially for diseases with patchy field distributions and lifecycles that begin in the soil and evolve across soil and plants. This is the case for the soilborne fungal pathogen Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, the causal agent of white mold in over 400 hosts, such as common bean, soybean, cotton, sunflower, canola, and tobacco, threatening sustainable agriculture on all continents. There are image datasets focused on plant disease detection, including the Plant Disease Database (PDDB) and PlantDoc, which cover a large range of pla
