BACKGROUND: Gingival fibromatosis is a rare condition characterized by a generalized enlargement of the buccal and lingual aspects of the attached and marginal gingiva.
METHODS: This case report describes the periodontal management of a 13-year-old female patient with gingival fibromatosis associated with Zimmermann-Laband syndrome. The patient presented with gingival enlargement involving the maxillary and the mandibular arches, anterior open bite, and non-erupted teeth. Periodontal treatment included gingivectomy in all four quadrants.
RESULTS: Histopathologic evaluation of the excised tis

From anatomic and functional aspects the stomatognathic system and the upper cervical spine are closely interlinked. Together with complex neuromuscular relationships, this gives rise to an important field of cooperation between orthodontics and orthopedics. The literature appeals for close interdisciplinary cooperation for patients with syndromes and for those with torticollis and scoliosis. Since orthopedic points of contact are obvious in these special cases, orthopedic aspects are now being taken increasingly into account in farther-reaching studies. With the rising popularity of manual me

The impacted palatal canine requires a combination of both surgical and orthodontic management. Two types of approach are commonly used: simple exposure, or exposure with bracketing at the time of surgery. In this study 104 consecutively treated patients with palatally impacted canines were examined at two centres, one at which the ectopic tooth was surgically exposed alone and the other where an orthodontic bracket was bonded to facilitate early traction, and the flap replaced. The aim was to compare the outcome and complication rate for each type of procedure. In 30.7 per cent of all cases e

The present cross-sectional study was based on orthopantomograms of 1245 Greek children (590 males and 655 females), whose ages ranged from 6 years 10 months to 14 years. Three orthodontic practices were the source of these orthopantomograms which were taken before the start of orthodontic treatment. The resorption process of the deciduous mandibular canine and molar roots was divided into five stages and the root formation process of their permanent successors into eight stages. The percentage distribution of the deciduous root resorption stages for each root formation stage of the correspond

The long axis of the maxillary incisor root is not always identical to that of the crown. Instead, there is appreciable variation in the crown-root angle, generally with the crown torqued lingual to the root axis. In orthodontic cases assessed before and at the end of full-banded treatment, the crown-root angle was significantly deflected in the Class III molar relationship series, notably so in moderate to severe cases where the maxillary incisors are constrained lingual to the lower arcade. Apical root resorption was not significantly associated with the crown-root angle before or after comp

Nasal respiratory function and its relationship to growth development of the craniofacial structure has been a subject of interest and controversy for over 100 years. The otolaryngologist as the primary physician with responsibility of managing the upper respiratory tract is obviously most intimately involved with diagnosis and treatment of upper respiratory tract problems. To further evaluate the evidence regarding causes of craniofacial growth, a study was done involving pretreatment orthodontic subjects and their manifestation of classic signs of adenoid facies ("long-face syndrome"). BACKGROUND: Increased interest in intraoral devices like Bionator III, reverse twin block, and removable mandibular retractor (RMR), which modify tissues beneficially. The emerging Orthodontic Removable Traction Appliance (ORTA™) or the lower-clear-plate-based intermaxillary traction (LCP-IMT) has shown promising results, especially in stimulating maxillary growth and inhibiting mandibular growth in Class III malocclusion. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of the LCP-IMT against the RMR during the early correction of Class III deformities in growing patients regarding skeletal, dental,

The aim of this prospective, longitudinal, controlled study is to describe the long-term safety and efficacy of growth hormone (GH) administration on craniofacial morphology in boys with short stature. Forty-six boys, who started GH treatment at the Department of Paediatrics Göteborg Paediatric Growth Research Centre, were consecutively included in the study. Twenty-five boys were classified as growth hormone-deficient (GHD) and 21 as idiopathic short stature (ISS). The patients were injected with 33 (n=31) or 67 (n=15) microg GH/kg body weight/day. The mean age at the start of treatment was 1

A case report of treatment for a traumatically intruded maxillary central incisor is described. An attempt at accelerating eruption via surgical exposure of the embedded tooth was only partially successful. Orthodontic extrusion of the partially erupted tooth brought the tooth into correct position.

Palatally displaced canines (PDCs) are a common orthodontic anomaly that frequently require surgical exposure to facilitate orthodontic alignment. Two primary techniques exist: open surgical exposure, where the canine is left to erupt spontaneously, and closed surgical exposure, where an attachment is bonded for immediate orthodontic traction. This meta-analysis aims to compare the efficacy of closed versus open surgical exposure for PDCs regarding pain, surgical time, complications, eruption time, and patient-reported outcomes. We systematically searched the following databases: PubMed, Cochr

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) are structural anomalies resulting from the failure of craniofacial prominences to fuse during embryonic development. Orthodontic treatment seeks to address these conditions by improving dentofacial balance and restoring oral function, but long-term post-treatment stability continues to pose a challenge. This systematic review included a literature search of four electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane CENTRAL) to identify observational evidence on the stability of orthodontic treatment in CLP. Six studies, comprising three cohort studies a

INTRODUCTION: This case report describes the multidisciplinary treatment of a patient with mandibular retrognathia and hyperdivergent skeletal pattern, condylar resorption, and severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
CASE PRESENTATION: A 42-year-old female patient presented with a chief complaint of mandibular retrognathia. The patient had no significant medical history, and her body mass index was 18.8. She had a +9.0 mm overjet and +1.0 mm overbite, and an Angle Class II molar relationship. Cephalometric analysis revealed SNA, SNB, and FMA of 76.0°, 67.5°, and 50.5°, respectively. Computed to

PURPOSE: The indication for orthodontic treatment in children and adolescents is based on severity of tooth and jaw malocclusions that lead to limitations in oral health-related quality of life (QoL). We have already shown how overbite and overjet deviations negatively affect QoL. However, few studies have investigated the influence of anterior crowding in the upper jaw on QoL.
METHODS: We selected 734 children and adolescents aged 11-14 years from a population-based longitudinal cohort study (LIFE Child). The data used in this study were retrospectively analyzed. Evaluable jaw models were av
