INTRODUCTION: In Australia, faecal incontinence, the involuntary loss of liquid or solid stool with or without a person's awareness, has been reported in 8% of the South Australian and 11% of the urban New South Wales community-dwelling populations. Studies conducted in 2004 and 2005 reported faecal incontinence in more than 20% of colorectal and urogynaecological clinic patients at Townsville Hospital (a referral centre serving rural North Queensland). Study group consisted of 84 oncological patients with various tumor localization that received chemotherapy with taxanes. Medium follow up was 32.1 +/- 2.1 months. EBV is an oncogenic herpesvirus associated with a number of human malignancies. The consistent presence of the EBV genome in certain tumors offers the potential for novel EBV-targeted therapies. EBV can infect cells in either a latent or lytic form. Here we demonstrate that a variety of chemotherapeutic agents, including cis-platinum, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), and taxol, induce the switch from the latent to lytic form of EBV infection in tumor cells. A late phase II clinical trial of RP56976 (docetaxel), derived from Taxus baccata was performed to evaluate anti-tumour activity, time to progression and clinical toxicity in patients with advanced or recurrent breast cancer. The cytotoxicity of mitotic spindle poisons, vinca alkaloids and the anthracycline, adriamycin, against cisplatin-sensitive and -resistant rat lymphoma and human ovarian carcinoma cell lines was investigated. The antiapoptosis potential of bcl-2 has now been well established. But the biochemical mechanism of bcl-2 action is still poorly understood. Using the phosphatase inhibitor okadaic acid (OA) or chemotherapeutic agents such as Taxol and 5'-fluorouracil, we found that bcl-2 can be phosphorylated. Taxotere (RP 56976; NSC 628503; N-debenzoyl-N-tert-butoxycarbonyl-10-deacetyl taxol) is a new microtubule stabilizing agent.
