Routine Psychological Screening for Parent Depressive Symptoms in an Outpatient Pediatric Specialty Burn Clinic.

Pediatric burn injuries are stressful for parents, yet few burn clinics report screening caregivers. We evaluated psychometric properties of a two-item depression screener administered to parents of children with burns during outpatient clinic visits. We also examined associations between parent depression symptoms and child characteristics. We used a retrospective review of pediatric patients with burn injuries (n = 496, age range: 0-21 years; M = 5.0 years, SD = 4.4 years) from an outpatient specialty burn clinic. Sample was 54.8% male; ethnicity was 42.4% Black/African American and 42.2% Wh

Parenting Among Mothers Who Experienced Child Sexual Abuse: A Qualitative Systematic Review.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) represents a significant public health problem. While CSA is associated with several adverse outcomes, recent attention has been given to its effect on maternal parenting. Despite a growing literature on this topic, a comprehensive systematic review has not been conducted. Thus, this review aimed to fill this gap. Several search strategies were used, including searches in academic databases. Two reviewers completed screening, full-text review, data extraction, and quality determinations. Extracted qualitative data were synthesized for the 108 studies meeting inclusion

Attachment behavior and hostility as explanatory factors linking parent-adolescent conflict and adolescent adjustment.

This study examined whether adolescents' behavior in a support-seeking context helped to explain associations between increases in mother-adolescent conflict during early adolescence and changes in adolescents' internalizing and externalizing symptoms. A sample of 194 adolescents aged 12 to 14 (51% female) and their mothers were followed over 1 year. Mother-adolescent pairs participated in a speech task introducing an external social stressor into the parent-child relationship. Using a latent difference score model, adolescents' observed attachment behavior and hostility were compared as poten

Epigenetic transgenerational inheritance of parent-of-origin allelic transmission of outcross pathology and sperm epimutations.

Epigenetic transgenerational inheritance potentially impacts disease etiology, phenotypic variation, and evolution. An increasing number of environmental factors from nutrition to toxicants have been shown to promote the epigenetic transgenerational inheritance of disease. Previous observations have demonstrated that the agricultural fungicide vinclozolin and pesticide DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) induce transgenerational sperm epimutations involving DNA methylation, ncRNA, and histone modifications or retention. These two environmental toxicants were used to investigate the impacts o

Parental home removal of urethral catheters after urological surgery-a prospective benchmarking study.

INTRODUCTION: Many urological operations require placement of a urethral Foley catheter. The catheter often needs to remain in situ for a period of time after discharge; and patients subsequently require either a further hospital admission or community nurse review for catheter removal. Parents can easily remove the catheter at home by cutting the balloon port. This disrupts the valve and hence deflates the retaining balloon, thereby facilitating spontaneous passage of the catheter. The authors introduced this practice to their institution. AIM: The aim was to assess safety and success of par

Transition to Self-Management among Adolescents with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: Parent and Adolescent Perspectives.

PURPOSE: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder among females. The foundation of PCOS self-management is engaging in healthy lifestyle habits, however, there is limited literature regarding adolescents' transition to PCOS self-management. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to explore parental and adolescent views of the transition to PCOS self-management. DESIGN AND METHODS: A qualitative descriptive approach was used through focus groups (N = 4) with adolescents diagnosed with PCOS and their parents. RESULTS: A total of seven adolescents and eight paren

Different parental origins of supernumerary X chromosomes in brothers with Klinefelter syndrome: A case report.

RATIONALE: Recurrence of Klinefelter syndrome (KS) in non-twin brothers is very rare. This study examined the inheritance pattern of supernumerary X chromosomes in non-twin brothers. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 16-year-old man presented with small-sized testicles. During his diagnostic work-up, his brother, in his late 20's, also complained of small testes and erectile dysfunction. DIAGNOSIS: Chromosome analysis in peripheral blood revealed non-mosaic 47,XXY karyotype in both brothers. Their mother showed a normal 46,XX karyotype. INTERVENTIONS: To examine the inheritance pattern of supernumerary X

Pain Sensitization, Breastfeeding Effectiveness, and Parental Preferences by Antibiotic Route in Suspected Neonatal Sepsis.

OBJECTIVES: Intravenous (IV) and intramuscular (IM) antibiotics have comparable efficacy in treating neonates undergoing sepsis evaluations. There are no clinical data favoring the use of either route regarding newborn pain and parental preferences. We hypothesized that pain associated with IM injections would worsen breastfeeding effectiveness and decrease parental satisfaction, making IV catheters the preferred route. METHODS: This prospective cohort study took place in an academic institution with nurseries in 2 separate hospitals, 1 providing IV antibiotics, and the other, IM antibiotics.

Relative contributions of parental intention and provider recommendation style to HPV and meningococcal vaccine receipt.

We described the relative contributions of parental intention and provider recommendation style to HPV and meningococcal vaccine receipt. Parent-child dyads that were eligible for both meningococcal and HPV vaccines participated in pre-visit surveys and consented to audio recording of their clinical interactions with healthcare providers related to vaccination. Surveys were analyzed for parent and child demographics and parental intention to vaccinate children with HPV and/or meningococcal vaccines. Audio recordings were analyzed for provider recommendation style, defined as indicated (provide

Parenting Stress through the Lens of Different Clinical Groups: a Systematic Review & Meta-Analysis.

Research has demonstrated an association between parenting stress and child behavior problems, and suggested levels of parenting stress are higher among parents of children at risk for behavior problems, such as those with autism and developmental delay (ASD/DD). The goal of the present study was to conduct a systematic review of parenting stress and child behavior problems among different clinical groups (i.e., ASD/DD, chronic illness, with or at-risk for behavioral and/or mood disorders). We also examined demographic and methodological variables as moderators and differences in overall level

Contribution of parenting to complex syntax development in preschool children with developmental delays or typical development.

BACKGROUND: Despite studies of how parent-child interactions relate to early child language development, few have examined the continued contribution of parenting to more complex language skills through the preschool years. The current study explored how positive and negative parenting behaviours relate to growth in complex syntax learning from child age 3 to age 4 years, for children with typical development or developmental delays (DDs). METHODS: Participants were children with or without DD (N = 60) participating in a longitudinal study of development. Parent-child interactions were transc

Associations of adiposity and parental diabetes with prediabetes among adolescents in Kuwait: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Prediabetes, a high-risk state for developing diabetes, has become more prevalent among children and adolescents in recent decades. This study sought to estimate the prevalence of prediabetes and assess its association with adiposity among adolescents in Kuwait. Also, to determine whether maternal and paternal history of diabetes associate with offspring prediabetes in a sex-specific manner. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted by enrolling students (n = 1959; aged 14-19 years) attending high schools across Kuwait. Body mass index-for-age z-scores were estimated using th

Impact of child and informant gender on parent and teacher ratings of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) rating scales typically provide normative tables arranged according to child age, child gender, and type of informant, which facilitates addressing the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders developmental deviance requirement for diagnosing ADHD. Missing, however, is any consideration of the gender of the informant. The purpose of this paper was to conduct an exploratory examination of informant gender via secondary analyses of a large data set used to standardize the ADHD Rating Scale-5. Two (informant

Trajectories of Social Anxiety in Children: Influence of Child Cortisol Reactivity and Parental Social Anxiety.

Few studies have examined the interactive effect of intra- and extra-individual vulnerability factors on the trajectory of social anxiety in children. In this study, we examined the joint influence of familial vulnerability (i.e., parental social anxiety) and child biological stress vulnerability (i.e., cortisol reactivity) on trajectories of social anxiety. Children (N = 112 (57 males), M age = 8.14 years, S.D. = 2.25) were followed over three visits spanning approximately three years. Parental social anxiety was assessed using the Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory, children's behavior and
