Mindfulness-Based Treatment for Bipolar Disorder: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

Despite the increasing number of studies examining the effects of mindfulness interventions on symptoms associated with Bipolar Disorder (BD), the effectiveness of this type of interventions remains unclear. The aim of the present systematic review was to (i) critically review all available evidence on Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) as a form of intervention for BD; (ii) discuss clinical implications of MBCT in treating patients with BD; and (iii) provide a direction for future research. The review presents findings from 13 studies (N = 429) that fulfilled the following selection c

Mental Health and Self-Worth in Socially Transitioned Transgender Youth.

OBJECTIVE: Social transitions are increasingly common for transgender children. A social transition involves a child presenting to other people as a member of the "opposite" gender in all contexts (e.g., wearing clothes and using pronouns of that gender). Little is known about the well-being of socially transitioned transgender children. This study examined self-reported depression, anxiety, and self-worth in socially transitioned transgender children compared with 2 control groups: age- and gender-matched controls and siblings of transgender children. METHOD: As part of a longitudinal study

Health-Related Quality of Life Trajectories of Extremely Low Birth Weight Survivors into Adulthood.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the health-related quality of life (HRQL) trajectories of a regional cohort of extremely low birth weight (ELBW, <1000 g) survivors (births from 1977 to 1982) and a group of normal birth weight (NBW) controls, at 3 ages: 12-16 years, 22-26 years, and 29-36 years, spanning over 20 years. We hypothesized that the HRQL of the ELBW cohort would be significantly compromised compared with their NBW peers, and that neurosensory impairments (NSI) would have an additional negative effect. STUDY DESIGN: We used the Health Utilities Index Mark 3, in which health status was self-as

Evaluation of the effect of hand hygiene reminder signs on the use of antimicrobial hand gel in a clinical skills center.

Hand hygiene is a critical element of patient care, which needs to be learned and reinforced to become an autonomous behavior. Previous studies have explored aspects of hand hygiene behavior in the clinical workplace, but not in controlled learning environments with health professional students. Development of good hand hygiene behavior requires a multi-faceted approach, including education, reinforcement, feedback and audit. Our study aimed to identify the effect of unannounced hand hygiene reminder signs on the use of antimicrobial hand gel in a clinical skills center. Year 2 MBChB students

Modelling condom use: Does the theory of planned behaviour explain condom use in a low risk, community sample?

To date, most condom research has focused on young or high-risk groups, with little evidence about influences on condom use amongst lower-risk community samples. These groups are not risk free and may still wish to negotiate safer sex; yet the considerations involved could be different from those in higher-risk groups. Our research addresses this gap: We report a cross-sectional questionnaire study enquiring about recent condom use and future use intentions in community settings. Our sample (n = 311) purposively included couples in established relationships, known to be condom users. Items inc

Phonology in Swedish-speaking 3-year-olds born with cleft lip and palate and the relationship with consonant production at 18 months.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 50% of children born with cleft palate present speech difficulties around 3 years of age, and several studies report on persisting phonological problems after palatal closure. However, studies on early phonology related to cleft palate are few and have so far mainly been carried out on English-speaking children. Studies on phonology related to cleft palate in languages other than English are also warranted. AIMS: To assess phonology in Swedish-speaking children born with and without unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) at 3 years of age, and to identify variables a

Behavioral adjustment of toddler and preschool-aged children with single-suture craniosynostosis.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to confirm initial reports of elevated behavior problems in children with single-suture craniosynostosis, using multiple informants, longitudinal analyses, and a control group. The authors hypothesized that children with single-suture craniosynostosis would have higher levels of maladjustment than comparison children, particularly at the older age and in selected areas of previously observed vulnerability: attention and social adjustment. METHODS: The Child Behavior Checklist was completed by 436 mothers (219 with single-suture craniosynostosis) and 3

Life history in male mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx): physical development, dominance rank, and group association.

We assess life history from birth to death in male mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx) living in a semifree-ranging colony in Gabon, using data collected for 82 males that attained at least the age of puberty, including 33 that reached adulthood and 25 that died, yielding data for their entire lifespan. We describe patterns of mortality and injuries, dominance rank, group association, growth and stature, and secondary sexual character expression across the male lifespan. We examine relationships among these variables and investigate potential influences on male life history, including differences in

Examining delinquency in adolescents differentially prenatally exposed to alcohol: the role of proximal and distal risk factors.

OBJECTIVE: An association has been reported between prenatal alcohol exposure and delinquent behavior in adolescents. Problems are believed to be particularly significant for those who were exposed prenatally but do not have full fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). The goals of this study were (1) to examine the relation between a range oflevels of prenatal exposure and delinquent behavior in a community sample and (2) to examine the effect of other current risk factors, in addition to prenatal exposure, on delinquent behavior. METHOD: In this study, 250 low income, predominantly black youths (mean

Evaluation devices in the narratives of deaf/hard of hearing and hearing Arabic-speaking adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Pragmatic language use in general and the use of evaluation devices (EDs) are very important components in everyday communication and expressing thoughts and feelings in narrative production. However, very little is known about the use of evaluative devices in the narratives of Arabic-speaking adolescents, especially those who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH). AIMS: The present study investigated the use of EDs in personal oral narratives elicited from 124 hearing and DHH Arabic-speaking adolescents. METHODS & PROCEDURES: Each participant was asked to tell a personal story abou

Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy With or Without Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation Versus Conventional Therapy for Upper Extremity Function in Chronic Stroke Survivors: Protocol for a Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Motor impairment is a common consequence of stroke, significantly impacting patients' daily functioning and quality of life. More than 80% of stroke survivors experience upper extremity (UE) motor impairments, which severely impact their ability to carry out daily living activities. Combining motor rehabilitation techniques, such as constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT), with sensorimotor stimulation methods, such as neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), may be beneficial in enhancing UE functional recovery after a stroke. This combined approach could activate a broader

Scale-up of the Diactive-1 mHealth program integrating tailored resistance training as an educational strategy for self-management in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes: protocol for an 11-hospital multicenter randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Physical activity is strongly recommended for youth with type 1 diabetes, yet many children and adolescents do not meet current exercise guidelines, partly because of fear of hypoglycemia. Resistance training may offer metabolic and musculoskeletal benefits, but its implementation in routine pediatric diabetes care remains limited. Diactive-1 is an mHealth program designed to deliver tailored resistance-training sessions combined with glucose-management educational support. This multicenter trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Diactive-1 (v2.0) in improving hangrip strengt

Shallow Acupuncture for brainstem infarction: a randomized controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Brainstem infarction is a clinically important subtype of posterior circulation infarction and is often associated with disability and poor functional recovery. Disease-specific therapeutic strategies remain limited, and rehabilitation-oriented evidence specifically targeting functional recovery in this population remains insufficient. Acupuncture has been studied and applied as an adjunctive approach for stroke rehabilitation in multiple regions; however, high-quality evidence for its use in brainstem infarction remains scarce. This trial primarily aims to evaluate whether adjunct

Implementation fidelity of a pilot group-based nutrition intervention for pregnant women (Nutri Pou Ti' Moun 2): a mixed methods assessment.

BACKGROUND: In the context of an overseas territory of a high-income country characterized by high fertility rates, cultural diversity, and food insecurity, a small-scale collective intervention with a focus on nutrition was implemented among pregnant women. Inspired by centering-based group care, without the health care component and with a food aid component, the interactive group sessions were co-facilitated by an expert on the session's topic and a peer-facilitator. The objective of the study was to assess the implementation fidelity to determine whether upcoming intervention outcomes are

Evaluating postoperative pneumatic lymphatic drainage following lymphaticovenous anastomosis for secondary lower extremity lymphoedema in Japan (LVA-PLD trial): protocol for a multicentre randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Secondary lower extremity lymphoedema is a chronic progressive condition that frequently develops after cancer treatment and results in persistent swelling, recurrent cellulitis and impaired quality of life. Lymphaticovenous anastomosis (LVA) is an established physiological microsurgical treatment; however, postoperative outcomes vary and evidence-based adjunctive postoperative management remains limited. A novel pneumatic lymphatic drainage (PLD) system has been developed to deliver anatomically directed, pathway-aligned mechanical stimulation that mimics manual lymphatic draina

Aerobic dance during chemotherapy in patients with breast cancer with cognitive impairment (ADANC): protocol for an assessor-blinded randomised clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Therapeutic exercise has been used to improve cancer-related dysfunction. Recent studies suggest that exercise after chemotherapy can improve cancer-related cognitive impairment. However, the effect of exercise during chemotherapy in patients with breast cancer remains unclear. Aerobic dance is a comprehensive form of aerobic exercise which may be more easily accepted by female patients. The Aerobic Dance Against NeuroCognitive decline (ADANC) trial is designed to evaluate the effectiveness of aerobic dance during chemotherapy on breast cancer-related cognitive impairment. It aim
