Observations on a new collagen barrier membrane in 16 consecutively treated patients. Clinical and histological findings.

BACKGROUND: Space-maintaining capacity, cell disclusive potential, and stability over time are crucial factors to achieving sufficient bone augmentation with membrane barriers. The case series presented here assessed a new collagen barrier used in bone augmentation. Clinically, the healing pattern, especially in cases of secondary healing, was studied. METHODS: Soft tissue healing was documented by photographs, and the size of the dehiscences calculated by image analysis. The measurements were performed on digitized photographs. During reentry, barrier remnants were dissected and histological

SenseCam as a rehabilitation tool in a child with anterograde amnesia.

We present the case of a 13-year-old boy, CJ, with profound episodic memory difficulties following the diagnosis of a metastatic intracranial germ cell tumour and subsequent treatment with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. At the core of this study is the first application of SenseCam to a child with severe memory impairment. CJ was taken for a walk while he was wearing SenseCam. This included visiting four different locations. We manipulated the number of locations he could review on SenseCam "films" and then tested recognition memory (forced choice) for both reviewed and non-reviewed locations.

Evaluation of the efficacy, safety, and satisfaction rate of topical latanoprost in patients with hypopigmented burn scars treated with fractional CO2 laser: a double-blind randomized controlled clinical trial.

Burn scars present psychological and social challenges for patients, classified into atrophic and hypertrophic types. Treatments like corticosteroid injections, laser therapy, and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are commonly recommended for hypertrophic scars, while regenerative medicine and fractional CO2 lasers are linked to some degree of improvement for atrophic scars. Hypopigmented and depigmented burn scars pose ongoing challenges for healthcare providers and patients, with therapies such as intense pulsed light and fractional CO2 laser showing variable effects in treating these co

A deep learning system for differential diagnosis of skin diseases.

Skin conditions affect 1.9 billion people. Because of a shortage of dermatologists, most cases are seen instead by general practitioners with lower diagnostic accuracy. We present a deep learning system (DLS) to provide a differential diagnosis of skin conditions using 16,114 de-identified cases (photographs and clinical data) from a teledermatology practice serving 17 sites. The DLS distinguishes between 26 common skin conditions, representing 80% of cases seen in primary care, while also providing a secondary prediction covering 419 skin conditions. On 963 validation cases, where a rotating

Calvarial Metastasis as the Initial Presentation in Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Rare Entity.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) presenting as calvarial metastasis (CM) is a rare situation with limited reports in literature. We present a case of a 64-year-old gentleman, who presented with an 8-month history of swelling on the right forehead, associated with decreased vision and size of the right eye. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a partially hemorrhagic lesion in the right frontal bone, extending into the scalp and causing a midline shift, with intra-orbital and intraconal extension. Positron emission tomography showed multiple bi-lobar liver metastases. The patient was diagnosed wit

Visualization of Keratopathy Associated With the Antibody-Drug Conjugate Belantamab Mafodotin Using Infrared Imaging in Patients With Multiple Myeloma.

PurposeThe treatment of patients with relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM) with the antibody-drug conjugate belantamab mafodotin is affected by ocular adverse effects, most frequently keratopathy with corneal microcyst-like epithelial changes (MECs). To assess ocular side effects, the Keratopathy and Visual Acuity (KVA) scale, based on the extent of keratopathy subjectively graded on slit-lamp examination and the change in best corrected visual acuity from baseline, was created. Advanced corneal imaging techniques have been explored to further characterize MECs and identify objective im

Orthognathic positioning system: intraoperative system to transfer virtual surgical plan to operating field during orthognathic surgery.

PURPOSE: To introduce the concept and use of an occlusal-based "orthognathic positioning system" (OPS) to be used during orthognathic surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The OPS consists of intraoperative occlusal-based devices that transfer virtual surgical planning to the operating field for repositioning of the osteotomized dentoskeletal segments. The system uses detachable guides connected to an occlusal splint. An initial drilling guide is used to establish stable references or landmarks. These are drilled on the bone that will not be repositioned adjacent to the osteotomy line. After mobili

Corneal Epithelial Findings in Patients with Multiple Myeloma Treated with Antibody-Drug Conjugate Belantamab Mafodotin in the Pivotal, Randomized, DREAMM-2 Study.

IntroductionPatients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM) represent an unmet clinical need. Belantamab mafodotin (belamaf; GSK2857916) is a first-in-class antibody-drug conjugate (ADC; or immunoconjugate) that delivers a cytotoxic payload, monomethyl auristatin F (MMAF), to myeloma cells. In the phase II DREAMM-2 study (NCT03525678), single-agent belamaf (2.5 mg/kg) demonstrated clinically meaningful anti-myeloma activity (overall response rate 32%) in patients with heavily pretreated disease. Microcyst-like epithelial changes (MECs) were common, consistent with reports from oth

Mcl-1 downregulation enhances BCG treatment efficacy in bladder cancer by promoting macrophage polarization.

BackgroundBacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is the primary method of postoperative perfusion treatment for bladder cancer. The myeloid cell leukemia gene-1 (Mcl-1) is closely associated with the development of malignant tumors. Previous research by our group has demonstrated that downregulating Mcl-1 using shRNA can enhance the efficacy of BCG treatment in bladder cancer. This study aims to investigate the impact of Mcl-1 downregulation in combination with BCG treatment on bladder cancer, macrophage polarization, and the underlying mechanism of action, with the goal of reducing recurrence and met
