Wolbachia strain wAlbB shows favourable characteristics for dengue control use in Aedes aegypti from Burkina Faso.

Dengue represents an increasing public health burden worldwide. In Africa, underreporting and misdiagnosis often mask its true epidemiology, and dengue is likely to be both more widespread than reported data suggest and increasing in incidence and distribution. Wolbachia-based dengue control is underway in Asia and the Americas but has not to date been deployed in Africa. Due to the genetic heterogeneity of African Aedes aegypti populations and the complexity of the host-symbiont interactions, characterization of key parameters of Wolbachia-carrying mosquitoes is paramount for determining the

Temporal genetic diversity of Schistosoma japonicum in two endemic sites in China revealed by microsatellite markers.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is one of the neglected tropical diseases. The causative agent of schistosomiasis in China, Schistosoma japonicum, has long been a major public health problem. An understanding of fundamental evolutionary and genetic processes in this species has major implications for its control and elimination. Intensive control efforts have greatly reduced the incidence of schistosomiasis in China, but little is known about the genetic consequences of these efforts. METHODS: To investigate this, we sampled twice (years 2003 and 2011) from two endemic regions where populations o

XRCC1 gene polymorphisms and breast cancer risk in different populations: a meta-analysis.

We performed a meta-analysis to investigate the role of XRCC1 polymorphisms Arg194Trp, Arg280His and Arg399Gln in breast cancer. The results were pooled in a manner that appropriately reflects a biological model of gene effect using a random effects logistic regression model without multiple comparisons. Forty studies from 31 reports were included with 10 465 cases and 10 888 controls at Arg194Trp, 6156 cases and 5806 controls at Arg280His, and 21 467 cases and 22 766 controls at Arg399Gln. Our analysis found a tendency towards a recessive effect of Arg280His variant in Asian population only (

Prevalence of dermatophytosis in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of dermatophytic infections in rheumatoid arthritis is unknown. This study investigated the prevalence of dermatophytosis in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and the relationship between sulfasalazine, low-dose methotrexate and steroid therapy. METHODS: We examined 53 consecutive patients with rheumatoid arthritis for evidence of dermatophytosis and compared them 55 with age- and sex-matched, nonimmunocompromised controls recruited from the low back pain population. Nail scrapings were obtained from the subjects, and the clinical diagnosis of dermatophytosis was co

A comparative analysis of Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti subjected to diapause-inducing conditions reveals conserved and divergent aspects associated with diapause, as well as novel genes associated with its onset.

Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti are mosquito species that are distributed worldwide and transmit diverse arboviruses of medical importance, such as those causing yellow fever, dengue, chikungunya and Zika. A. albopictus embryos may remain viable for long periods in the environment due to their ability to become dormant through quiescence or diapause, a feature that contributes to their dispersion and hinders control actions. Diapause incidence can vary among natural populations of A. albopictus, but metabolic and genetic parameters associated with its induction still need to be better defin

Identification of rare variants in cardiac sodium channel β4-subunit gene SCN4B associated with ventricular tachycardia.

Ventricular tachycardia (VT) causes sudden cardiac death, however, the majority of risk genes for VT remain unknown. SCN4B encodes a β-subunit, Navβ4, for the voltage-gated cardiac sodium channel complex involved in generation and conduction of the cardiac action potential. We hypothesized that genomic variants in SCN4B increase the risk of VT. We used high-resolution melt analysis followed by Sanger sequencing to screen 199 VT patients to identify nonsynonymous variants in SCN4B. Two nonsynonymous heterozygous variants in SCN4B were identified in VT patients, including p.Gly8Ser in four VT pa

Toxicity of spinosad to temephos-resistant Aedes aegypti populations in Brazil.

The mosquito Aedes aegypti is the primary vector of different arboviruses and represents a major public health problem. Several Brazilian populations of Ae. aegypti have developed resistance to temephos, the most used organophosphate larvicide. New tools which are less harmful to the environment and safer for humans are becoming increasingly important to control this insect vector. Spinosad, an aerobic fermentation product of a soil actinobacteria, has a favorable environmental profile. It presents selective insecticide properties, a mechanism of action that differs from those of many syntheti

Taking the Pulse of Atrial Fibrillation: A Practical Approach to Rate Control.

Despite major advances in atrial fibrillation (AF) catheter ablation, rate control remains the most widely used management strategy for AF in the general population. In addition to its use as a primary approach to control symptoms and prevent complications of AF, rate control is often a necessary complement to rhythm-control strategies, especially with antiarrhythmic drugs. The value of rate-control therapy is supported by several large randomized clinical trials showing no difference in major cardiovascular outcomes between rate-control and rhythm-control strategies with currently available t

Screening-to-intervention pathway for child anxiety problems alongside usual school practice versus usual school practice only (iCATSi2i): a cluster-randomised, controlled trial in primary schools in England.

BACKGROUND: Screening for anxiety problems in primary schools and offering parent-led cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) via online and telephone support for those who screen positive could address key barriers to effective early intervention for some of the most prevalent child mental disorders. We aimed to evaluate outcomes from a screening-to-intervention pathway for child anxiety problems alongside usual school provision compared with assessment and usual school provision only. METHODS: iCATSi2i was a pragmatic, parallel-group, superiority, cluster-randomised, controlled trial in 84 prim

Ecological Momentary Assessment Studies of Binge Eating in Non-Clinical Populations: A Scoping Review.

Background/Objectives: Binge eating (BE)-eating an objectively large amount of food with a subjective loss of control-occurs broadly beyond formal eating disorder diagnoses. However, its real-time occurrence in the general population remains poorly understood due to reliance on retrospective, clinic-based self-reporting. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) captures repeated, real-time reports of BE and may overcome these limitations. This scoping review mapped EMA studies of BE in non-clinical, general population samples, paying attention to population characteristics, methodological approac

Effectiveness and acceptability of biometrics to evaluate intervention coverage and contamination in a cluster randomised trial of community-based sexual and reproductive health services for youth in Zimbabwe.

OBJECTIVES: Low intervention uptake and contamination can dilute effects of cluster randomised trials (CRTs). We investigated the feasibility of digital fingerprints to assess intervention coverage and contamination in a CRT of community-based sexual and reproductive health services for youth (CHIEDZA). METHODS: 24 clusters in Zimbabwe were randomly allocated to intervention/control. In intervention clusters, CHIEDZA services were provided in community halls for 30 months. A population-based survey of youth aged 18-24 (700/cluster) was conducted to ascertain impact. Digital fingerprints were

Ex Vivo Expanded Regulatory T Cells Inhibit AAA Progression by Limiting CD4+ and CD8+ T Cell Accumulation in Aortic Tissue.

BACKGROUND: Regulatory T cells (Tregs) play a crucial role in the pathophysiology of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA), a chronic inflammatory condition with few treatment options for patients with early-stage disease. Treg therapy for AAA is potentially beneficial but its specific mechanism requires further investigation for clinical applications. METHODS: After identifying the critical role of T-cells in AAA using human and mouse AAA single-cell RNA sequencing data, we investigated the influence of Tregs on immune cell infiltration within mouse AAA-specifically CD3+ T cells-using congenic tr

Epidemiology, fibrinogen, clot properties, and cardiovascular disease risk-an African perspective.

A state of the art lecture titled "Epidemiology, fibrinogen, clot properties and cardiovascular disease risk: an African perspective" was presented at the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) congress in 2025. Altered fibrin clot structure, characterized by tightly packed fibers, stiffer networks, and resistance to lysis, contributes to thrombosis. However, most of the available evidence comes from relatively small-sized observational, case-control studies or from animal models or in vitro studies. Much less is known regarding clot properties on population level. Epidemio

Genetic association study between rs2234253 (p.T96K) variant of TREM2 and Alzheimer's disease in a Tunisian population.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the leading cause of major neurodegenerative cognitive impairment. The risk of developing AD is influenced by a complex interaction of genetic predisposition and environmental factors. Among the genetic risk factors, the APOE ɛ4 allele is the most significant, while variants in the TREM2 (Triggering Receptor Expressed on Myeloid Cells 2) and ABCA7 (ATP-binding cassette transporter A7) genes have also been associated with an increased risk of AD. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the association of APOE ɛ4, TREM2 gene variants (rs75932628 [p.R47
