A growth-year classification model for cultivated ginseng based on feature-decision-level fusion of leaf hyperspectral and RGB image features.

The growth year of cultivated ginseng is an important factor influencing its quality and price. This study established a dataset comprising leaves from 1- to 5-year-old cultivated ginseng plants. With the aim of distinguishing the growth years of cultivated ginseng plants, a machine-learning and deep-learning dual-branch fusion non-destructive identification model was developed. In the machine-learning branch, 19 spectral features were derived using the leaf hyperspectral data and an SVM identification model was built. The accuracy of this model was 90.89%. The accuracy of the SVM model was im

A new era in computational pathology: A survey on foundation and vision-language models.

Recent advances in deep learning have completely transformed the domain of computational pathology (CPath). More specifically, it has altered the diagnostic workflow of pathologists by integrating foundation models (FMs) and vision-language models (VLMs) in their assessment and decision-making process. The limitations of existing deep learning approaches in CPath can be overcome by FMs through learning a representation space that can be adapted to a wide variety of downstream tasks without explicit supervision. Deploying VLMs allow pathology reports written in natural language be used as rich

Quantum machine learning enhanced laser speckle analysis for precise speed prediction.

Laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI) is an optical technique used to assess blood flow perfusion by modeling changes in speckle intensity, but it is generally limited to qualitative analysis due to difficulties in absolute quantification. Three-dimensional convolutional neural networks (3D CNNs) enhance the quantitative performance of LSCI by excelling at extracting spatiotemporal features from speckle data. However, excessive downsampling techniques can lead to significant information loss. To address this, we propose a hybrid quantum-classical 3D CNN framework that leverages variational qua

Determination of terazosin in the presence of prazosin: Different state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms with UV spectroscopy.

Counterfeit drugs have adverse effects on public health; chromatographic methods can be used but they are costly. In this study, we developed cost-effective and environmentally friendly methodology for the analysis of terazosin HCl (TZ) in the presence prazosin hydrochloride (PZ) using UV spectroscopy in conjunction with machine learning (ML) models. Variable selection algorithms were applied to select most informative spectral variables. Thirty-five ML models were assessed and their performances were compared. The models covered a wide range of prediction mechanisms, such as tree-based, linea

Probabilistic value learning in medial temporal lobe amnesia.

A prevailing view in cognitive neuroscience suggests that different forms of learning are mediated by dissociable memory systems, with a mesolimbic (i.e., midbrain and basal ganglia) system supporting incremental trial-and-error reinforcement learning and a hippocampal-based system supporting episodic memory. Yet, growing evidence suggests that the hippocampus may also be important for trial-and-error learning, particularly value or reward-based learning. In the present report, we use a lesion-based neuropsychological approach to clarify hippocampal contributions to such learning. Six amnesic

Explainable machine learning and unsupervised anatomical phenotyping of mitral valve prolapse in patients with severe mitral regurgitation.

BACKGROUND: Mitral annular disjunction (MAD) is increasingly recognized in mitral valve prolapse (MVP), but its anatomical embedding within degenerative MVP remains incompletely defined. We assessed whether explainable supervised learning and unsupervised clustering could identify MAD-associated MVP phenotypes. METHODS: We analyzed a public surgical cohort of 979 patients with MVP and clinically significant mitral regurgitation. Etiology was classified as Barlow disease (BD) or fibroelastic deficiency (FED). Logistic regression, Random Forest and XGBoost were evaluated for MAD prediction usin

Identifying predictors of student depression through validated machine learning pipelines.

BACKGROUND: Depression among student populations has become a growing public health concern, with prevalence rates ranging from 10 to 30 percent across studies. Machine learning methods offer the potential not only to predict depression risk but also to identify which factors most strongly predict depression through feature importance analysis. However, the validity of such rankings depends critically on the quality of the underlying model's learning dynamics; which is a consideration often overlooked when aggregate performance metrics appear favorable. METHODS: This study evaluated six basel

Oblique Genomics Mixture of Experts: Prediction of Brain Disorder With Aging-Related Changes of Brain's Structural Connectivity Under Genomic Influences.

During the process of brain aging, the changes of white matter structural connectivity are closely correlated with the cognitive traits and brain function. Genes have strong controls over this transition of structural connectivity-altering, which influences brain health and may lead to severe dementia disease, e.g., Alzheimer's disease. In this work, we introduce a novel deep-learning diagram, an oblique genomics mixture of experts(OG-MoE), designed to address the prediction of brain disease diagnosis, with awareness of the structural connectivity changes over time, and coupled with the genomi

Power efficient refined seizure prediction algorithm based on an enhanced benchmarking.

Deep learning techniques have led to significant advancements in seizure prediction research. However, corresponding used benchmarks are not uniform in published results. Moreover, inappropriate training and evaluation processes used in various work create overfitted models, making prediction performance fluctuate or unreliable. In this study, we analyzed the various data preparation methods, dataset partition methods in related works, and explained the corresponding impacts to the prediction algorithms. Then we applied a robust processing procedure that considers the appropriate sampling para

Deep Learning Predicts Hematopoietic Stem Cell Aging From 3D Chromatin Images.

The functional decline of the hematopoietic system during aging affects organismal function and contributes to reduced healthspan. Quantifying hematopoietic aging holds great scientific and clinical relevance. Alterations in chromatin architecture are a well-established hallmark of aging that encode rich and informative signatures of the aging process, yet they remain largely unexplored as quantitative markers. Here, we present an interpretable deep learning approach based on convolutional neural networks, ChromAgeNet, that learns changes in the spatial features of chromatin architecture upon

A pioneering artificial intelligence tool to predict treatment outcomes in ovarian cancer via diagnostic laparoscopy.

Ovarian cancer is associated with high rates of patient mortality and morbidity. Laparoscopic assessment of tumor localization can be used for treatment planning in newly diagnosed high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC). While spread to multiple intra-abdominal areas is correlated with worse outcomes, whether other morphological tumor differences are also associated with patient outcomes is unknown. Given the large volume of visual information in laparoscopic videos, we investigated whether deep-learning models can capture implicit features and predict treatment outcomes. We developed a n

Enhancing identification performance of cognitive impairment high-risk based on a semi-supervised learning method.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive assessment plays a pivotal role in the early detection of cognitive impairment, particularly in the prevention and management of cognitive diseases such as Alzheimer's and Lewy body dementia. Large-scale screening relies heavily on cognitive assessment scales as primary tools, with some low sensitivity and others expensive. Despite significant progress in machine learning for cognitive function assessment, its application in this particular screening domain remains underexplored, often requiring labor-intensive expert annotations. AIMS: This paper introduces a semi-super
