Validation of the self-rated Dimensional Apathy Scale in community stroke survivors.

Apathy, a disorder of motivation observed in up to 40% of stroke survivors, is negatively associated with stroke rehabilitation outcomes. Different apathy subtypes have been identified in other conditions, but there is currently no validated multidimensional measure of post-stroke apathy (PSAp). The Dimensional Apathy Scale (DAS) assesses apathy across three subtypes: Executive, Emotional and Initiation apathy. We aimed to determine if the DAS is a reliable and valid tool to detect and characterise apathy in stroke. Fifty-three stroke survivors, (45.3% males, median age 54), and 71 people with

Association of insight, avoidance behavior, indecisiveness, and inflated responsibility with other clinical characteristics in children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Although the Children's Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (CY-BOCS) includes ancillary symptom dimensions - insight, avoidance, degree of indecisiveness, inflated sense of responsibility, pervasive slowness/disturbance of inertia, and pathological doubting -, we know little about their clinical/scientific utility. We examined these ancillary dimensions in childhood obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and tested their associations with clinical characteristics. METHODS: Treatment-seeking children and adolescents (n=173) with a DSM-5 OCD diagnosis were recruited from six center

The OCI-4: An ultra-brief screening scale for obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a prevalent and burdensome condition that is typically assessed using in-depth interviews or lengthy self-report measures. Accordingly, routine screening in busy non-mental health settings is impractical, and OCD is often under- (or mis-) recognized. We evaluated an ultra-brief version of a widely used self-report measure, the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised (OCI-R), which may be employed as a routine screener for OCD. A total of 1087 adults diagnosed with OCD, 1306 unselected adults from the community, and 423 adults with anxiety related disorders

Validity of the 15-item social inhibition questionnaire in outpatients receiving psychological or psychiatric treatment: The association between social inhibition and affective symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Social inhibition may promote symptoms of depression and anxiety in adults from an outpatient hospital population. The current work builds on a previously corroborated construct of social inhibition and examines the psychometric properties of this assessment tool and its predictive validity in the adult outpatient hospital population. METHODS: A total of 350 adult outpatients receiving treatment at the department of Medical Psychology or Psychiatry completed measures of social inhibition and symptoms of anxiety (7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale) and depression (9-item Pati

Cross-cultural and gender invariance of emotion regulation in the United States and India.

BACKGROUND: The ability to effectively regulate one's emotions has been established as an important transdiagnostic mechanism in the development and maintenance of psychopathology. To date, much of the research on emotion regulation (ER) has been conducted in Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic (WEIRD) samples. Specifically, there is a dearth of cross-cultural construct equivalence studies on measures of ER. Establishing measurement equivalence is an important first step to facilitate future research on ER in culturally diverse samples. METHODS: The present study sought to

Reliability and validity of the Brief Assessment of Impaired Cognition (Chinese version) for stroke patients.

Objective and accurate cognitive assessment scales are essential for guiding cognitive rehabilitation following stroke. The aim of this study was to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Mandarin Chinese version of the Brief Assessment of Impaired Cognition (BASIC) in stroke patients. The English version of the BASIC scale was translated into Mandarin Chinese, and 56 stroke patients at a stroke treatment center were enrolled in the study. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and BASIC scale were used to evaluate the patients' cognitive function, and content validity, structural vali

Reliability and validity of the Korean version of the MacNew heart disease Health-related Quality of Life questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Myocardial infarction and unstable angina are prevalent in Korea. The MacNew Heart Disease health-related quality of life questionnaire is a widely used patient-reported outcome measure for patients with heart disease in several countries. In this study, we tested the validity and reliability of the Korean version of the MacNew (K-MacNew). METHODS: Participants were 200 patients who had experienced unstable angina or myocardial infarction, and were recruited from a tertiary hospital in Korea. The K-MacNew was developed using forward-backward translation techniques. Construct valid

Validity and Reliability of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Barriers Scale in the Czech Republic (CRBS-CZE): Determination of Key Barriers in East-Central Europe.

Cardiovascular rehabilitation (CR) is an effective secondary preventive model of care. However, the use of CR is insufficient, and the reasons for this are not well-characterized in East-Central Europe. This prospective observational study psychometrically validated the recently translated Cardiac Rehabilitation Barriers Scale for the Czech language (CRBS-CZE) and identified the main CR barriers. Consecutive cardiac in/out-patients were approached from January 2020 for 18 months, of whom 186 (89.9%) consented. In addition to sociodemographic characteristics, participants completed the 21-item

Maternal childhood abuse and neglect predicts offspring development in early childhood: The roles of reflective functioning and child sex.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that offspring of mothers having been exposed to childhood abuse and neglect (CA&N) are at increased risk of developmental problems and that boys are more affected by maternal CA&N than girls. Since impairments in reflective functioning (RF) have been associated with maternal CA&N and offspring development, RF could represent a key mechanism in these intergenerational risk trajectories. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated mediating (RF) and moderating (child sex) mechanisms in the association between maternal CA&N and child development. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTI

Past perspectives and new opportunities for the explanatory item response model.

Models of word reading that simultaneously take into account item-level and person-level fixed and random effects are broadly known as explanatory item response models (EIRM). Although many variants of the EIRM are available, the field has generally focused on the doubly explanatory model for modeling individual differences on item responses. Moreover, the historical application of the EIRM has been a Rasch version of the model where the item discrimination values are fixed at 1.0 and the random or fixed item effects only pertain to the item difficulties. The statistical literature has advance

Assessment of the Performance of a Modified Motor Scale as Applied to Juvenile Onset Huntington's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease can present at almost any age but traditionally, those with an onset ≤20 years are described as having juvenile onset Huntington's disease (JOHD). They are more likely to have bradykinesia and dystonia earlier in the course of the disease. The Total Motor Score of the Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale (UHDRS-TMS) is often used as the principal outcome measure in clinical trials. OBJECTIVE: To identify a motor scale more suitable for JOHD patients. METHODS: A working group reviewed the UHDRS-TMS and modified it by adding four further assessment items.

Evaluating soreness symptoms of fibromyalgia: Establishment and validation of the Revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire with Integration of Soreness Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain. A common complaint is soreness. However, until now, no assessment tool is available to address soreness and evaluate its impact on disease severity. We aimed to establish a questionnaire for soreness assessment and to evaluate its validity in fibromyalgia patients. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia per the American College of Rheumatology criteria (2011) were recruited. The Revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire with an integration of Soreness Assessment (FIQRS) was established by a

Let's Call it Quits: Break-Even Effects in the Decision to Stop Taking Risks.

"Chasing" behavior, whereby individuals, driven by a desire to break even, continue a risky activity (RA) despite incurring large losses, is a commonly observed phenomenon. We examine whether the desire to break even plays a wider role in decisions to stop engaging in financially motivated RA in a naturalistic setting. We test hypotheses, motivated by this research question, using a large data set: 707,152 transactions of 5,379 individual financial market spread traders between September 2004 and April 2013. The results indicate strong effects of changes in wealth around the break-even point o

The Padua Inventory-Washington State University Revision of Obsessions and Compulsions: A Reliability Generalization Meta-Analysis.

The Padua Inventory-Washington State University Revision (PI-WSUR) is a frequently used test to assess obsessive-compulsive symptoms in screening and clinical contexts. A reliability generalization meta-analysis was carried out to estimate the average reliability of the PI-WSUR scores and its subscales and to search for characteristics of the studies that can explain the heterogeneity among reliability coefficients. A total of 124 independent samples reported some coefficient alpha or test-retest correlation with the data at hand for the PI-WSUR scores. The average internal consistency reliabi
