"Bridge population": sex workers or their clients?--STI prevalence and risk behaviors of clients of female sex workers in China.

As the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in China has come to the forefront of public health attention, female sex workers (FSWs) and their clients (CFSWs) are becoming increasingly important to HIV/STI prevention efforts. This secondary analysis uses data abstracted from the Chinese Health and Family Life Survey 1999-2000 to report prevalence rates of two STIs as well as sexual risk behaviors for CFSWs - men who paid for sex with FSWs in the past 12 months - in comparison with men who had not patronized FSWs. Among 1879 Chinese CFSWs who completed anon

Diagnostic testing during pregnancy: a descriptive analysis of utilisation data.

To describe patterns of diagnostic testing during the antenatal period and to assess the potential benefit of using Medicare claims data in monitoring testing practice, we examined the matched claims data (with identifying details removed) on approximately 10,000 women having a confinement for which a Medicare benefit was claimed between 1 July and 30 September 1990. The results showed that almost all the women included in the study sample had an ultrasound and blood group and antibody examination. A smaller proportion had serological tests for syphilis (77 per cent), rubella (51 per cent) and

Civil liability in oral & maxillofacial surgery: Α systematic review.

Maxillofacial surgery is a surgical specialty with anatomical, functional, and aesthetic requirements, which makes it a field at increased risk of medical negligence and subsequent legal claims. The review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines and used international medical and legal databases. Studies that analyzed court decisions, insurance claims, or recorded compensation data related to maxillofacial surgery were included. The extracted data included, among others, the year and country of publication, the causes of action, and the amounts of financial compensation. Most la

Ebola in the rear-view mirror: how epidemic pasts shaped Sierra Leone's preparedness and response to Covid-19.

This paper examines how past experience and legacies of epidemics shaped Sierra Leone's response to COVID-19 and how these influences evolved over time. COVID-19 unfolded in the wake of the West African Ebola epidemic (2013-2016), a crisis which was unprecedented in scale. Despite differing markedly in both transmission patterns and clinical outcomes, the Sierra Leonean government repeatedly invoked Ebola when responding to COVID-19, framing the new outbreak through the lens of the old. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and interviews with policymakers, response personnel, health workers, and

Trends in ferritin measurements in children and adolescents: A Finnish 9-year observational study.

AIM: A lack of stored iron, indicated by low serum ferritin, has been associated with various clinical symptoms. There are no longitudinal data on the frequency of ferritin measurements in children and adolescents. METHODS: A total of 2834 children aged <18 years with serum ferritin and other anaemia-related blood parameters taken during an outpatient visit between 2012 and 2019 were investigated. Patients with acute infections were excluded. Nationwide temporal and regional variations and correlations with public information searches through Google were analysed. RESULTS: A significant incr

[Difficulties accessing abortion in legal termination contexts: high school students' narratives in a rural community in Mexico].

In this article, we analyze beliefs and practices among young high school students who seek out or consider the possibility of terminating a pregnancy. We selected students from a public school located in a rural, peasant community in México City, México. This is a constructivist ethnographic study based on in-depth interviews with 15 sexually-active women aged between 18 and 24 years. The interviews were recorded with participants' authorization and informed consent. Results indicate that social stigmas persist which affect the dignity of women who have chosen to have an abortion. However, Ca

A Systematic Review of Core Outcomes for Hypospadias Surgery.

Although the outcome of hypospadias surgery requires careful scrutiny, there is little consensus on what clinical outcome parameters should be considered essential as part of routine clinical practice. To understand the extent of variation in reported outcome measures, Pubmed was searched to identify outcomes in boys with hypospadias published in the English language from 2008 to 2017. Eligibility criteria were met in 268 publications. Outcomes were inconsistently reported and only 9 (13%) were reported in more than 25% of papers. Outcome studies describing younger boys were overrepresented. U

Ethical considerations in gastroenterology and endoscopy.

Previously doctors decided what was right or wrong in medicine, today our individual freedom is more limited. External influences including the human rights act, government initiatives, management protocols, professional guidelines, multi-disciplinary decision-making and financial restrictions intervene between the doctor and the patient. Furthermore the move away from paternalism in the doctor-patient relationship to patient empowerment (informed consent) has put patients in charge of their medical destiny. Increased public expectations leading to health screening, genetic profiling and treat

MACB CKD Task Force updated recommendations for reporting estimated glomerular filtration rate and albuminuria in adults.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common clinical condition with significant health risks for patients and is widely recognised as a major public health concern. Laboratory medicine plays a crucial role in both diagnosing and managing CKD, as diagnosis and staging rely on estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and evaluating albuminuria (or proteinuria). It was evident that the laboratory assessment of CKD in Malaysia is not standardised. In light of this, the Malaysian Association of Clinical Biochemistry CKD (MACB-CKD) Task Force issued a national recommendation for laboratory diagnosis

Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Global Poliovirus Surveillance.

On January 30, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (1). On March 24, 2020, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) suspended all polio supplementary immunization activities and recommended the continuation of polio surveillance (2). In April 2020, GPEI shared revised polio surveillance guidelines in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, which focused on reducing the risk for transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, to health care workers and communities by modifying a

Leveraging The Affordable Care Act To Enroll Justice-Involved Populations In Medicaid: State And Local Efforts.

The Affordable Care Act provides an unprecedented opportunity to enroll criminal justice-involved populations in health insurance, particularly Medicaid. As a result, many state and county corrections departments have launched programs that incorporate Medicaid enrollment in discharge planning. Our study characterizes the national landscape of programs enrolling criminal justice-involved populations in Medicaid as of January 2015. We provide an overview of sixty-four programs operating in jails, prisons, or community probation and parole systems that enroll individuals during detention, incarc

An Alabama-tailored human trafficking response protocol within the Community, Advocacy, Law, and Medicine framework: a state-adaptable model.

Human trafficking is a major public health and human rights concern associated with high rates of psychiatric disorders, substance use disorders, chronic medical illness, and ongoing exposure to trauma. Patients frequently encounter healthcare systems while still experiencing exploitation, yet trafficking often goes unrecognized. Healthcare professionals are uniquely positioned to identify trafficking and facilitate access to recovery-oriented services. This manuscript describes the development and content of a trauma-informed healthcare response protocol designed to guide Alabama clinicians i

Knowledge, attitude and practice of cervical cancer screening among women infected with HIV in Africa: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: To establish successful strategies and increasing the utilization of preventive services, there is a need to explore the extent to which the general female population is aware and use the service for cervical cancer-screening among women infected with HIV in Africa. Available evidences in this regard are controversial and non-conclusive on this potential issue and therefore, we estimated the pooled effect of the proportion of knowledge, attitude and practice of HIV infected African women towards cervical cancer screening to generate evidence for improved prevention strategies.
