Increased public health threat of avian-origin H3N2 influenza virus caused by its evolution in dogs.

Influenza A viruses in animal reservoirs repeatedly cross species barriers to infect humans. Dogs are the closest companion animals to humans, but the role of dogs in the ecology of influenza viruses is unclear. H3N2 avian influenza viruses were transmitted to dogs around 2006 and have formed stable lineages. The long-term epidemic of avian-origin H3N2 virus in canines offers the best models to investigate the effect of dogs on the evolution of influenza viruses. Here, we carried out a systematic and comparative identification of the biological characteristics of H3N2 canine influenza viruses

Risk for psychiatric and substance use disorders as a function of transitions in Sweden's public educational system: a national study.

BACKGROUND: To clarify, in a national sample, associations between risk for seven psychiatric and substance use disorders and five key transitions in Sweden's public educational system. METHODS: Swedish-born individuals (1972-1995, N = 1 997 910) were followed through 12-31-2018, at mean age 34.9. We predicted, from these educational transitions, risk for major depression (MD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bipolar disorder (BD), schizophrenia (SZ), anorexia nervosa (AN), alcohol use disorder (AUD), and drug use disorder (DUD), assessed from Swedish national registers, by Cox regressio

The Exodus Of State And Local Public Health Employees: Separations Started Before And Continued Throughout COVID-19.

Understanding the size and composition of the state and local governmental public health workforce in the United States is critical for promoting and protecting the health of the public. Using pandemic-era data from the Public Health Workforce Interests and Needs Survey fielded in 2017 and 2021, this study compared intent to leave or retire in 2017 with actual separations through 2021 among state and local public health agency staff. We also examined how employee age, region, and intent to leave correlated with separations and considered the effect on the workforce if trends were to continue.

Return-to-learn after concussion in Washington state public high schools during the COVID-19 pandemic.

AIM: To understand academic support structures for Washington state public high school students with concussion during the COVID-19 pandemic. MATERIALS & METHODS: Prospective, repeated cross-sectional study of 21 schools in 2020 and 2021. RESULTS: About 28% of schools reported not providing any return-to-learn (RTL) accommodations for students with concussion throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. RTL accommodation provision was associated with larger student body size (β = 0.002) and higher graduation rate (β = 0.261) but was not associated with presence of RTL school policy. About 38.1% of scho

SARS-CoV-2 variants resistant to monoclonal antibodies in immunocompromised patients constitute a public health concern.

COVID-19 in immunocompromised hosts has emerged as a difficult therapeutic management problem. Immunocompromised hosts mount weak responses to SARS-CoV-2 and manifest infection outcomes ranging from severe disease to persistent infection. Weakened immune systems mean greater viral loads and increased opportunities for viral evolution. Gupta, Konnova, et al. report the emergence of resistant SARS-CoV-2 variants in immunocompromised patients after monoclonal antibody (mAb) therapy. mAbs target only a single determinant in the viral Spike protein, which is a weakness of such therapy when treating

Age-Based Genomic Screening during Childhood: Ethical and Practical Considerations in Public Health Genomics Implementation.

Genomic sequencing offers an unprecedented opportunity to detect inherited variants that are implicated in rare Mendelian disorders, yet there are many challenges to overcome before this technology can routinely be applied in the healthy population. The age-based genomic screening (ABGS) approach is a novel alternative to genome-scale sequencing at birth that aims to provide highly actionable genetic information to parents over the course of their child's routine health care. ABGS utilizes an established metric to identify conditions with high clinical actionability and incorporates informatio

Temporal and Spatial Trends of Adverse Pregnancy and Birth Outcomes in a Sample of Births from a Public Hospital in Chile.

Understanding temporal and spatial trends in pregnancy and birth outcomes within an urban area is important for the monitoring of health indicators of a population. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of all births in the public hospital of Temuco, a medium-sized city in Southern Chile between 2009 and 2016 (n = 17,237). Information on adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes, as well as spatial and maternal characteristics (insurance type, employment, smoking, age, and overweight/obesity), was collected from medical charts. Home addresses were geocoded and assigned to neighborhood. We teste

Carbon sequestration potential of different forest types in Pakistan and its role in regulating services for public health.

A high amount of CO2 causes numerous health effects, including headaches, restlessness, difficulty in breathing, increased heart rate, high blood pressure, asphyxia, and dizziness. This issue of increasing atmospheric CO2 can only be solved via above-ground and below-ground carbon sequestration (CS). This study was designed to determine the relationship between CS with the crown area (CA), diameter at breast height (DBH), height (H), species richness (SR), and elevation in different forest types of Pakistan with the following specific objectives: (1) to quantify the direct and indirect relatio

Public health indicators for cerebral palsy: A European collaborative study of the Surveillance of Cerebral Palsy in Europe network.

BACKGROUND: Public health indicators (PHIs) play an increasingly important role in health policy decision-making. Although cerebral palsy (CP) is the commonest physical disability in children, its impact at population level has not been systematically measured so far. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to propose six PHIs for CP designed to annually document the extent of CP and effectiveness of perinatal organisation, the burden of this condition, access to health services and preventive health strategies in the post-neonatal period and to report on the latest updated estimations using population-based da

Public trust in the Government to control the spread of COVID-19 in England after the first wave-a longitudinal analysis.

BACKGROUND: To control the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), governments are increasingly relying on the public to voluntarily manage risk. Effectiveness is likely to rely in part on how much the public trusts the Government's response. We examined the English public's trust in the Conservative Government to control the spread of COVID-19 after the initial 'crisis' period. METHODS: We analyzed eight rounds of a longitudinal survey of 1899 smartphone users aged 18-79 in England between October 2020 and December 2021. We fitted a random-effects logit model to identify personal char

Recent Advances in Sources, Migration, Public Health, and Surveillance of Bisphenol A and Its Structural Analogs in Canned Foods.

The occurrence of bisphenol A (BPA) and its structural analogs, known as endocrine disruptors is widely reported. Consumers could be exposed to these chemicals through canned foods, leading to health risks. Considerable advances have occurred in the pathogenic mechanism, migration law, and analytical methodologies for these compounds in canned foods. However, the confusion and controversies on sources, migration, and health impacts have plagued researchers. This review aimed to provide insights and perspectives on sources, migration, effects on human health, and surveillance of these chemicals

Research on the evaluation and optimization model of community public space during the epidemic prevention period based on TOPSIS.

BACKGROUND: Nasal bone fractures are common in children but can be challenging to diagnose accurately in the first days due to swelling and tenderness. While X-rays and computed tomography have limitations, ultrasound may be a radiation-free and cost-effective alternative for diagnosing and treating nasal fractures. METHODS: A prospective cohort study at a tertiary referral hospital between 2021-2023. Children who had sustained nasal trauma were included. A radiologist and a non-radiologist blindly reviewed ultrasound scans, and the results were compared to the physical examination performed

Public Health Risks, Dermatological Manifestations, and Environmental Justice Associated With Vinyl Chloride Exposure: Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Environmental vinyl chloride (VC) exposure may result in serious acute and chronic dermatological conditions. Because existing literature largely focuses on exposures in occupational settings, a gap persists in our understanding of the medical consequences of large-scale chemical spills. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the potential dermatological manifestations of VC exposure in the context of industrial spills and other environmental disasters and to highlight the public health and justice implications of such releases. METHODS: In this narrative review, relevant evidence

Sex and gender in infection and immunity: addressing the bottlenecks from basic science to public health and clinical applications.

Although sex and gender are recognized as major determinants of health and immunity, their role is rarely considered in clinical practice and public health. We identified six bottlenecks preventing the inclusion of sex and gender considerations from basic science to clinical practice, precision medicine and public health policies. (i) A terminology-related bottleneck, linked to the definitions of sex and gender themselves, and the lack of consensus on how to evaluate gender. (ii) A data-related bottleneck, due to gaps in sex-disaggregated data, data on trans/non-binary people and gender identi

Common Patterns of Cisgender Use in Public Health Articles and Their Implications for Gender Inclusivity Efforts, 2013‒2020.

Objectives. To identify how "cisgender" has been used in public health articles in recent years relative to the historical origins of the term to mark normative gender and describe systems of social power. Methods. I analyzed 352 US-focused public health articles (2013-2020) using a summative content analysis approach. I traced cisgender use by year and compared it by sample population (cisgender-only, mixed, not cisgender). Results. I identified 4 interlocking and mutually reinforcing patterns of cisgender use: limited and narrow use, undertheorized use, use as the default gender, and reinfor
