Quality of life assessment for nuclear, cortical, posterior subcapsular patients before and after cataract surgery.

PURPOSE: The impact of visual outcomes of cataract surgery can be measured using a questionnaire. The aim of our study was to evaluate how patient quality of life changes after cataract surgery and if there are differences between the responses of patients with nuclear, cortical, and posterior subcapsular cataracts, which has not been studied before. METHOD: We studied 210 cataract patients who were divided into 3 cataract groups based on their cataract type: nuclear (n = 80), cortical (n = 70), and posterior subcapsular (PSC) (n = 60). The patients completed the Visual Function Index (VF-14)

Vision-related quality of life is selectively affected by comorbidities in patients with geographic atrophy.

BACKGROUND: The atrophic late stage of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is termed geographic atrophy (GA), and affects visual acuity (VA) as well as quality of life (QoL). Previous studies have found that best-corrected VA (BCVA), the standard vision assessment often underrepresents functional deficits. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation between atrophic lesion size, VA and QoL measured with the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (VFQ-39) in a Danish population. Moreover, we wanted to evaluate the correlation between comorbidities, beha

Quality of life in patients with hemifacial spasm after microvascular decompression and botulinum toxin therapy.

UNLABELLED: To date, microvascular decompression (MVD) and botulinum therapy (BT) confirm own efficacy in the treatment of hemifacial spasm (HFS). Quality of life (QOL) suffers first of all in these patients. Therefore, the dynamics of QOL indicators determines postoperative outcomes. Various researchers have proposed specialized scales for assessing QoL in HPS patients (HFS-7, HFS-8, HFS-30). OBJECTIVE: To analyze QOL in patients with HPS before and after MVD and BT including HFS-7 score and regression of HFS. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We analyzed data of patients (n=80) divided into two groups

Health-related quality of life in patients with generalized pustular psoriasis: A systematic literature review.

Generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) is a rare, chronic, neutrophilic inflammatory skin disease characterized by episodes of widespread eruption of sterile, macroscopic pustules that can be accompanied by systemic inflammation and symptoms. A systematic literature review and narrative synthesis were conducted to determine the impact of GPP on patients' health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and patient-reported severity of symptoms and to compare its impact to patients with plaque psoriasis (plaque PsO). Searches were undertaken in Embase, MEDLINE and the Cochrane Library from 1 January 2002 t

Geriatric Syndromes and Health-Related Quality of Life in Older Adults with Chronic Kidney Disease.

KEY POINTS: In older adults with CKD, geriatric syndromes are common and are associated with reduced quality of life. Addressing geriatric syndromes could potentially improve quality of life for older adults with CKD. BACKGROUND: Geriatric syndromes, which are multifactorial conditions common in older adults, predict health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Although CKD is associated with lower HRQOL, whether geriatric syndromes contribute to HRQOL in CKD is unknown. Our objective was to compare associations of geriatric syndromes and medical conditions with HRQOL in older adults with CKD. ME

Predominant polarity in bipolar affective disorder and its impact on cognition and quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar mood disorder or bipolar affective disorder (BPAD) is a chronic illness characterized by phases of mania/hypomania, depression, or mixed episodes. The course of bipolar mood disorder is relapsing in nature. It is associated with high comorbidity rates, a large number of premature deaths due to suicide, and a worse social and work performance. All of those characteristics entail a significant economic impact due to both direct and indirect costs and require an effective diagnostic and therapeutic approach. Lifetime prevalence of BPAD is approximately 4% worldwide. Various at
