A novel method to evaluate salivary flow rates of head and neck cancer patients after radiotherapy: a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: The procedure used to evaluate salivary flow rate is called sialometry. It can be performed through several techniques, but none appears to be really efficient for post-radiotherapy patients. OBJECTIVE: To adequate sialometry tests for head and neck cancer patients submitted to radiotherapy. METHODS: 22 xerostomic patients post-radiotherapy (total radiation dose ranging from 60 to 70Gy) were included in this study. Ten patients were evaluated using sialometries originally proposed by the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group and twelve were assessed by our modified methods. Unstimul

Simvastatin ameliorates ionizing radiation-induced apoptosis in the thymus by activating the AKT/sirtuin 1 pathway in mice.

Simvastatin is a HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor widely used to lower plasma cholesterol and to protect against cardiovascular risk factors. The aim of this study was to investigate whether simvastatin attenuates ionizing radiation-induced damage in the mouse thymus and to elucidate the possible mechanisms invovled. For this purpose, male C57BL/6J mice aged 6 weeks were used and exposed to 4 Gy 60Co γ-radiation with or without simvastatin (20 mg/kg/day, for 14 days). Apoptosis was determined by terminal deoxynucleotidyltransferase-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) assay or transmission elect

Impact of Platelet-Rich Plasma on Viability and Proliferation in Wound Healing Processes after External Radiation.

Platelet-rich plasma is a current subject of studies on chronic wound healing therapy due to possible pro-angiogenic effects. Microvascular compromise represents the major component in radiogenic wound healing complications. The effects of platelet-rich plasma on irradiated cells of the cutaneous wound healing process are poorly understood so far. In this study, the interaction of endothelial cells and adipose-derived stem cells in conjunction with treatment with platelet-rich plasma is investigated in the context of radiation effects. Therefore, the expression of surface-marker CD90 and CD31

Laryngeal chondronecrosis after radiation therapy in a dog.

A 5-year-old pug presented with a soft tissue swelling on the ventral neck and moderate stridor with associated respiratory effort. This patient received hypofractionated radiotherapy for metastatic upper lip mast cell tumour and to the submandibular lymph nodes 6 months before presentation. Oral examination showed moderate elongation of the soft palate, stage III laryngeal collapse with only the right laryngeal saccule mildly everted and exuberant pale epiglottal and left pharyngeal mucosa. Staphylectomy, resection of the epiglottal mucosa and left arytenoid lateralisation were performed. One

Histological and histochemical study of the protective role of rosemary extract against harmful effect of cell phone electromagnetic radiation on the parotid glands.

Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are a class of non-ionizing radiation (NIR) that is emitted from mobile phone. It may have hazardous effects on parotid glands. So, we aimed to investigate the histological and histochemical changes of the parotid glands of rats exposed to mobile phone and study the possible protective role of rosemary against its harmful effect. Forty adult male albino rats were used in this study. They were classified into 4 equal groups. Group I (control), group II (control receiving rosemary), group III (mobile phone exposed group) and group IV (mobile exposed, rosemary treate

Radiation-induced pemphigus or pemphigoid disease in 3 patients with distinct underlying malignancies.

The cutaneous lesions of radiation-induced pemphigus or pemphigoid disease may resemble other skin diseases, including recurrent underlying cancer. We performed a computerized search of Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minnesota) archives and identified 3 cases of pemphigus or pemphigoid disease that occurred after radiation therapy for breast, cervical, and metastatic malignancies, respectively. In 2 of these patients, the disease was initially confined to the irradiated field but subsequently disseminated to other parts of the patients' bodies, including mucosal surfaces. In all 3 patients, the blist

Cell-Assisted Lipotransfer Using Autologous Adipose-Derived Stromal Cells for Alleviation of Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema.

UNLABELLED: : Lymphedema is one of the most frequent side effects following cancer treatment, and treatment opportunities for it are currently lacking. Stem cell therapy has been proposed as a possible novel treatment modality. This study was the first case in which freshly isolated adipose-derived stromal cells were used to treat lymphedema. Treatment was given as a cell-assisted lipotransfer in which 4.07 × 10(7) cells were injected with 10 ml of lipoaspirate in the axillary region. Four months after treatment, the patient reported a great improvement in daily symptoms, reduction in need for

Experimental Platform for Ultra-high Dose Rate FLASH Irradiation of Small Animals Using a Clinical Linear Accelerator.

PURPOSE: A key factor limiting the effectiveness of radiation therapy is normal tissue toxicity, and recent preclinical data have shown that ultra-high dose rate irradiation (>50 Gy/s, "FLASH") potentially mitigates this effect. However, research in this field has been strongly limited by the availability of FLASH irradiators suitable for small animal experiments. We present a simple methodologic approach for FLASH electron small animal irradiation with a clinically available linear accelerator (LINAC). METHODS AND MATERIALS: We investigated the FLASH irradiation potential of a Varian Clinac

Bacterial brain abscess formation in post-irradiated patients: What is the possible pathogenesis?

BACKGROUND: Until recently, post-radiotherapy brain abscess was considered rare, but it has become an increasingly important aetiology. Discussions of the relationship between bacterial brain abscess and radiotherapy (RT) are rare in the literature. Our clinical study was conducted to analyse the role of RT in the pathogenesis of bacterial brain abscess. METHODS: For our retrospective study, 146 patients with bacterial brain abscess were recruited. Ten patients with a history of RT before brain abscess formation were reviewed. RESULTS: Eight of these patients underwent RT treatment for nasop

Direct effect of radiation on the peripheral nerve in a rat model.

Radiation neuropathy is one of the severe complications of radiotherapy. Entrapment neuropathy, caused by surrounding soft tissue fibrosis induced by radiation, plays a key role in the onset of this neuropathy. Meanwhile, the pathophysiology of the direct effect of radiation on the peripheral nerve is not yet fully understood. The aim of this study is to investigate the direct effects of radiation on rat sciatic nerves that are isolated from surrounding soft tissue. In the radiation group (R group), only the exposed sciatic nerve was irradiated with 90 Gy X-radiation. In the sham group (S grou

Free functioning muscle transfer in radiation-induced brachial plexopathy: case report.

Radiation-induced brachial plexopathy is a delayed complication of radiation treatment for tumors involving the neck and chest area and is progressive. A 56-year-old woman presented to us with loss of elbow flexion and weak wrist and finger extension 15 years after she received external beam radiation to the left chest, axilla, and supraclavicular region for treatment of breast cancer. She was managed with a gracilis free muscle transfer for elbow flexion and hand prehension. By 2 years after surgery she regained elbow range of motion of 40° to 110° and improved in hand function. She was able

Non-compressive disorders of the chiasm.

Chiasmal dysfunction produces a characteristic clinical picture, regardless of the mechanism. In most cases a compressive lesion is the cause. In occasional cases, however, no such extrinsic mass is found and other possible etiologies must be explored. In some of these cases, the pathologic process is identifiable with appropriate neuroimaging. For example, inflammation, infiltrative tumors, and radiation necrosis produce intrinsic chiasmal enhancement. Chiasmal ischemia may require specialized magnetic resonance (MR) sequences for diagnosis. Chiasmal hemorrhage, trauma and chiasmal herniation
