Three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy alone or in combination with surgery for treatment of canine intracranial meningiomas.

Treatment protocols, treatment planning methods and tumour types in studies evaluating radiotherapy for canine brain tumours have been varied. This case series retrospectively evaluated the outcome of definitive, three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT) as either a sole modality or as an adjuvant to surgery in 31 dogs diagnosed with meningioma by histopathology (n = 10) or cross-sectional imaging of the head (n = 21, assessed independently by two board certified radiologists). Prescribed dose ranged from 45 to 54 Gy in 2.5 to 3 Gy fractions. Median overall survival was 577 days (

Classic neuroimaging findings of nonketotic hyperglycemia on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging with absence of typical movement disorder symptoms (hemichorea-hemiballism).

While there are broad differential diagnoses for either the clinical finding of hemichorea-hemiballism or the imaging finding of lateralizing/asymmetric basal ganglia lesions (hyperdense on computed tomography, hyperintense on T1 magnetic resonance imaging), the presence of both findings is highly suggestive of nonketotic hyperglycemia. We present an unusual case of a patient with vague stroke-like complaints and imaging findings notable for lateralizing basal ganglia lesions. Laboratory analysis revealed nonketotic hyperglycemia and neurologic exam failed to elicit any findings of movement di

The vallecular line: an objective measure in evaluating the base of the tongue and vallecular cancers for transoral robotic surgery.

OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that the degree of the exophytic nature of the base of the tongue and vallecular cancers (BOTs) impacts the feasibility of transoral resection. The growth pattern of these cancers can be measured by the vallecular line (VL), which is the distance between the hyoid bone and the vallecular tip. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The normal VL was measured by 3 radiologists on 50 magnetic resonance imaging scans. The VL was then measured on magnetic resonance imaging scans of patients with BOT cancers. RESULTS: The mean VL was 8.2 mm (6.4-10 mm) in the healthy patients. The mean

Splenic lymphangioma that manifested as a solid-cystic mass: a case report.

Lymphangioma, a congenital malformation of the lymphatic system, is usually found in children, and generally occurs in the neck and mediastinum. It is rarely found in the spleen. The clinical features of splenic lymphangioma typically include abdominal pain, nausea, and abdominal distention. Frequently, however, this condition is asymptomatic and is incidentally detected by abdominal ultrasonography or by an abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan. In this paper, we retrospectively describe a case of incidentally detected splenic lymphangioma in a 30-year-old woman with special abdominal contr

Adult congenital heart disease: a practical approach.

Adults with congenital heart disease (CHD) represent an increasing population both because anomalies that might have remained undiagnosed in the past are now being diagnosed later in life on imaging and because significant therapeutic advances have resulted in survival to adulthood of patients with complex CHD. In this article, we discuss simple and common complex congenital anomalies that are encountered in general practice including their incidence, associations, and expected postoperative appearances. We will describe an approach to segmental anatomy and situs evaluation and details of some

Right-sided aortic arch with the retroesophageal left subclavian artery as the fourth branch.

We present a rare variation of the right-sided aortic arch with the retroesophageal left subclavian artery as the forth branch found in a cadaver of an 89-year-old Korean woman during a routine dissection. In this case, the first branch that arose from the ascending aorta was the left common carotid artery, which crossed ventral to the trachea in a left cephalic direction, followed by the right common carotid artery and then the right subclavian artery. Distal to these branches the aortic arch ran dorsally, passing between the esophagus and the vertebra. The left subclavian artery arose from t

Fenestration and duplication of the vertebral artery: the anatomical and clinical points of view.

The vertebral artery (VA) acts as a foundation for the posterior circulation of the head and neck. It presents a number of anomalies that can be easily visualized thanks to modern imaging techniques, such as MR and CT angiography or color Doppler ulrasonography. Determining the appropriate terminology for those anomalies can be sometimes more challenging than their recognition. One particular challenge concerns the differentiation between VA fenestration and duplication. Because of the different clinical prognoses associated with those anomalies, confusion should be avoided. Knowledge of the m

[Direct magnetic resonance arthrography, indirect magnetic resonance arthrography, and computed tomography arthrography for rotator cuff lesions and superior labral anterior and posterior tears: state of the art].

Continual improvements in diagnostic modalities used for shoulder imaging have led to better resolution, sensitivity, and specificity. There is no consensus about whether conventional MRI, direct MR arthrography, indirect MR arthrography, or CT arthrography is the best method. Many publications from very diverse origins propose different criteria for selecting the technique to apply in different patients. However, the application of rigid protocols that do not include all the imaging options does not help patients. Moreover, this approach also restricts radiologists' creativity, especially in

Intraosseous mucoepidermoid carcinoma: a review of the diagnostic imaging features of four jaw cases.

The purpose of this case series is to present the common features of intraosseous mucoepidermoid carcinoma (IMC) of the jaws in plain film and CT imaging. Two oral and maxillofacial radiologists reviewed and characterized the common features of four biopsy-proven cases of IMC in the jaws in plain film and CT imaging obtained from the files of the Department of Oral Radiology, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada. The common features are a well-defined sclerotic periphery, the presence of internal amorphous sclerotic bone and numerous small loculations, lack of septae bo

2013 appropriate utilization of cardiovascular imaging: a methodology for the development of joint criteria for the appropriate utilization of cardiovascular imaging by the American College of Cardiology Foundation and American College of Radiology.

The American College of Radiology (ACR) and the American College of Cardiology Foundation (ACCF) have jointly developed a method to define appropriate utilization of cardiovascular imaging. The primary role of this method is to create a series of documents to define the utility of cardiovascular imaging procedures in relation to specific clinical questions, with the aim of defining what, if any, imaging tests are indicated to help to determine diagnosis, treatment, or outcome. The methodology accomplishes this aim through the application of systematic evidence reviews integrated with expert op

Magnetic resonance imaging of temporomandibular joint cyst.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and clinical findings of 6 cases with synovial or ganglion cysts occurring in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). STUDY DESIGN: Six patients with histopathologically confirmed TMJ cysts who were examined by MRI were included in this study. Two oral radiologists retrospectively evaluated MR images. RESULTS: MR images revealed a homogeneous well defined mass of the TMJ in all cases. These cysts demonstrated low signal intensity on proton density-weighted (PDW) and homogeneous very high signal on T2-weigh

High-Resolution ultrasound of the pudendal nerve: normal anatomy.

INTRODUCTION: In this study we aimed to determine whether high-resolution ultrasound (US) can identify the pudendal nerve and its terminal branches. We also attempted to identify the best approach for visualizing these structures. METHODS: Normal anatomy of the pudendal nerve was evaluated in 3 cadavers and 20 healthy volunteers proximally at the level of the ischial spine and distally with low-frequency (2-5-MHZ) and high-frequency (12-7-MHZ and 17-5-MHZ) transducers. Two musculoskeletal radiologists performed the examinations and evaluations. Volunteers were placed in 3 different positions,

A new magnetic resonance imaging scoring system for perilymphatic space appearance after intratympanic gadolinium injection, and its clinical application.

OBJECTIVE: To establish a new magnetic resonance imaging scoring system for diagnosing endolymphatic hydrops. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 214 ears of 107 patients were categorised into five groups: no symptoms, Ménière's disease, sudden deafness, delayed endolymphatic hydrops and other ear disorders. Gadolinium distribution within the labyrinth was scored separately and quantitatively by two radiologists. Multiple independent-sample non-parametric tests, Bayesian discriminant analysis, multivariate logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic curve analyses were performed.

Multidetector CT features of mesenteric vein thrombosis.

Mesenteric vein thrombosis (MVT) accounts for 5%-15% of all mesenteric ischemic events and is classified as either primary or secondary. Primary MVT is idiopathic, whereas secondary MVT can result from a variety of underlying diseases and risk factors, including primary hypercoagulable states or prothrombotic disorders, myeloproliferative neoplasms, cancer (most frequently of the pancreas or liver), diverse inflammatory conditions, recent surgery, portal hypertension, and miscellaneous causes such as oral contraceptives or pregnancy. Clinical symptoms of MVT are rather nonspecific and are main

The athlete's wrist: ulnar-sided pain.

Ulnar-sided wrist pain is one of the most common symptoms in athletes of baseball, racket sports, golf, and wrestling where there is frequent use of the hands as well as in soccer and running, where hand use is minimal. Compared with all wrist injuries, ulnar-sided wrist injury is a relatively serious condition for athletes because it plays an important role in performing a strong grip and in the rotation of the forearm. Ulnar-sided wrist pain in athletes can be related to acute trauma or chronic overuse. Acute trauma can lead to bone fractures and sprains/tears of ligaments. Repetitive mechan

Ischiofemoral impingement in an 11-year-old girl.

Ischiofemoral impingement (IFI) is the entrapment of the quadratus femoris muscle (QFM) between the trochanter minor of the femur and the ischium-hamstring tendon. Patients with IFI generally present with hip pain, which may radiate toward the knee. Although there is no specific diagnostic clinical test for this disorder, the presence of QFM edema/fatty replacement and narrowing of the ischiofemoral space and the quadratus femoris space on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are suggestive of IFI. The optimal treatment strategy of this syndrome remains obscure. Patients may benefit from a conserv

Emergency radiology eponyms: part 2--Naclerio's V sign to Fournier gangrene.

An eponym is a name based on the name of a person, frequently as a means to honor him/her, and it can be used to concisely communicate or summarize a complex abnormality or injury. However, inappropriate use of an eponym may lead to potentially dangerous miscommunication. Moreover, an eponym may honor the incorrect person or a person who falls into disrepute. Despite their limitations, eponyms are still widespread in medicine. Many commonly used eponyms applied to extremity fractures should be familiar to most emergency radiologists and have been previously reported. Yet, a number of non-extre
