Fatty acid profiles recorded in ocean prey and California salmonine eggs reveal maternal ocean diets linked to thiamine deficiency.

Following the principle 'you are what you eat', fatty acid signatures (FASs) of adult fish tissues, when compared with those of potential prey, can link diet to nutritional status. In 2020, thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency was diagnosed for the first time in multiple anadromous salmon populations in California. However, direct information linking ocean diet to thiamine status in marine-feeding salmonines is typically unavailable. This research aimed to link diet composition and egg total thiamine concentration of anadromous Chinook salmon, coho salmon and steelhead using FAS analysis. From 202

Dynamic neural states underpin motor symptom severity in Parkinson's disease: a longitudinal analysis of chronic cortico-subthalamic nucleus recordings.

BACKGROUND: Motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD) may arise due to transient, network-wide neural dynamics that extend beyond beta-band oscillatory activity within the motor cortical-subthalamic nucleus (STN) circuit. METHODS: We applied a four-state Hidden Markov Model (HMM) to identify states of local and interregional oscillatory synchrony from chronic motor cortical and STN recordings (1046 h from 10 hemispheres) in five patients with PD (mean age 49 years), with concurrent measurements of bradykinesia, dyskinesia and tremor quantified using wearable sensors. FINDINGS: Neural states

An investigation of recorded physical, domestic and sexual victimisation as risk factors for adverse clinical outcomes in severe mental illness: longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Receipt of violence (victimisation) is associated with a higher risk of severe mental illness and with worse illness severity; however, associations with routine clinical outcomes are less clear. AIMS: To investigate associations between victimisation and subsequent clinical outcomes in people presenting with severe mental illness, using a south London health records data resource. METHOD: Data were extracted for 16 372 patients presenting between January 2007 and October 2022, aged 18+ years and receiving diagnoses of schizophrenia-related disorders, mania or bipolar disorder. Ulnar-evoked motor activity recorded over the abductor pollicis brevis region in carpal tunnel syndrome: a preliminary case series.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a brief and easily applicable electroneurographic (ENG) maneuver that can reveal ulnar-evoked motor activity detectable over the abducto'r pollicis brevis (APB) region in selected carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) cases. The aim is to illustrate how targeted ulnar stimulation may complement routine CTS evaluation, rather than to redefine severity grading or clinical decision making. METHODS: Routine upper-limb nerve conduction studies were supplemented with targeted motor stimulation of the ulnar nerve at the wrist, elbow, and above the elbow while recording over the APB reg

A Prospective Real-World Study Evaluating the Feasibility and Diagnostic Yield of Patient-Recorded Smartwatch EKGs During Palpitations: The WATCHinTIME Study.

Introduction: Palpitations are one of the most common cardiovascular complaints, affecting approximately 6% to 11% of the general population. Since palpitations often occur sporadically and resolve before medical evaluation, diagnosing the underlying rhythm disturbance requires documentation via an electrocardiogram (ECG) recorded during the symptomatic episode. The standard tool for this purpose has long been the 24-h Holter monitor, which has significant limitations, with diagnostic yields as low as 10% to 15%. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the feasibility and diagnostic yield of si

Serum Lipid Profile as a Predictor of Recurrence in Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media: A Retrospective Electronic Health Record-Based Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is a major cause of preventable hearing loss, particularly in resource-limited, semi-urban healthcare settings where advanced radiological imaging is often unavailable for recurrence risk stratification. Systemic dyslipidemia has been mechanistically linked to mucosal inflammation and epithelial dysfunction, but its association with CSOM recurrence has not been directly examined. This study investigated the clinical utility of fasting serum lipid profiles as predictors of recurrence in patients with CSOM. METHODS: We conducted a retrospectiv

A 15-year atmospheric record of intentionally produced persistent organic pollutants in Spain: Spatial gradients, thermodynamic fractionation, and temporal trends.

This study presents a comprehensive 15-year (2009-2023) assessment of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the Spanish atmosphere to evaluate the Stockholm Convention's effectiveness. Polyurethane foam passive samplers were deployed across 23 sites to monitor legacy pesticides and industrial chemicals. Results reveal a concentration hierarchy dominated by hexachlorobenzene (HCB), which accounted for a median of 41% of the ∑POP concentrations and displayed a remote-enriched spatial pattern characteristic of global distillation. In contrast, legacy pesticides and indicator polychlorinated bip

Protocol to record single-unit sensory neurons in an intact mouse ex vivo muscle-nerve-DRG-spinal cord preparation.

Dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons innervate peripheral tissues to relay tactile, thermal, and chemical information to the central nervous system (CNS). Here, we present a protocol to dissect an ex vivo preparation that retains anatomical innervation patterns to the hind paw muscles of the mouse. We also describe steps for directly recording single DRG neurons while applying physiologically relevant stimuli to their receptive fields. This protocol provides important information for studying sensory input from primary afferents. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, ple

Same Potential, Different Muscle: Masseter Acoustic/Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials Can Also Be Recorded From Temporalis Muscle.

PURPOSE: The masseter acoustic/vestibular evoked myogenic potential (mVEMP) is a recently developed electrophysiological tool used to assess otolithic function. The mVEMP assesses brainstem integrity and is sensitive in detecting brainstem lesions. The masseter muscles are supplied by the mandibular branch of the fifth cranial nerve and help stabilize the jaw in response to high-intensity sound. The temporalis and masseter muscles function together to stabilize the mandible. Both muscles are supplied by the trigeminal nerve. Hence, the study hypothesized that mVEMP could also be recorded from

Feasibility of Basal Ganglia Microelectrode Recordings under General Anesthesia with Combined Nitrous Oxide and Sevoflurane: A Retrospective Single-Center Experience.

INTRODUCTION: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established treatment for Parkinson's disease (PD). The traditional method for accurate implantation is awake microelectrode recordings (MERs) to map out the borders of the target nucleus. However, a significant portion of patients are unable to tolerate awake surgical procedures. Asleep MER techniques under different general anesthesia regimens have been described with variable effects on recording quality and required a lower inhaled sevoflurane level to obtain single unit recordings. Hence, a reliable method for asleep MER mapping is needed w

Real-World Safety of Cyproheptadine-Based Appetite Stimulants: An Electronic Health Record-Based Retrospective Cohort Study in Adult Patients.

Background: Cyproheptadine-based appetite stimulants (CAS) have been safely used in Korea for over 30 years. However, in older adults who are vulnerable to malnutrition, sarcopenia, and fall-related morbidity, safety of CAS in nutrition care remains uncertain due to limited evidence and its antihistaminic effects. This study aimed to assess the real-world safety of CAS compared with megestrol and other antihistamines to inform safe pharmacologic support within clinical nutrition practice. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted using Seoul National University Hospital's comm
