[Oscillatory potentials and ischemic processes in glaucoma].

The paper presents the results of studies made in patients with different stages of primary open-angle glaucoma, by using oscillatory potentials (OP). A significant inverse relationship was established between the OP index and the intraocular pressure; the OPI index was decreased in progressive glaucoma. The findings suggest that neuronal relationships are impaired in the proximal retina in glaucoma due to its ischemic processes.

Ocular manifestations of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

Ophthalmologic findings in individuals with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) are fairly common. A noninfectious microvasculopathy of the retina is the most frequent manifestation. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis is the opportunistic infection most likely to cause visual loss and must be differentiated from toxoplasmosis or herpetic retinitis. Ganciclovir, foscarnet, and cidofovir are the agents available to slow the progression of CMV retinitis, but they have significant toxicities.

[Retinal angiomatoses].

The three classical angiomatoses of the retina are described on the basis of the clinical picture. If early diagnosis is possible, the otherwise inevitable progression to exudative retinal detachment and secondary glaucoma may be avoided through extensive coagulation by laser, xenon or cryopexy. - The prognosis is best in Leber's retinitis; it in much poorer in cases of von Hippel-Lindau angiomatosis and primary Coats' disease.

Causes of refraction changes: a classification.

This classification of refraction changes suggests new and early approaches to the treatment of complications of myopia. By appreciating the ultrasonic work on accommodation by Coleman, The field is opened for a fresh study of such diseases as macular degeneration; diseases of the vitreous, even glaucoma; cataracts; and retinal detachments. Other diseases of the retina for which the causes are obscure may be viewed for possible help, if not a cure.

Ocular findings in the intravenous drug abuser.

Two patients with talc emboli of the retinal vasculature, both of them intravenous drug abusers, are described. One underwent a pars plana vitrectomy for removal of the vascularized vitreous mass that obscured the retina. The vitreous mass was presumably a result of retinal neovascularization secondary to the talc embolic. Other ocular findings that may be observed in the intravenous drug abuser are described.

Differences in the Effect of Dopamine on the Phototransduction Between Lampreys and Jawed Vertebrates.

Dopamine is one of the most important neurotransmitters for regulating retinal function and adjusting vision to the diurnal cycle. It exerts its regulatory effects, in part, through the cAMP pathway. Previous studies have demonstrated that dopamine affects phototransduction in amphibian rods, and that elevated intracellular levels of cAMP modulate the function of vertebrate rods and cones. Lamprey, the most primitive vertebrate, could be valuable for studying the evolution of dopamine regulatory loops in the retina. We examined whether the photoresponse properties of long (cone-like) and short

UV-protective sunscreen compounds and their differential accumulation across ocular tissues in fish eyes from Baltic Sea.

Many fish species achieve ultraviolet radiation (UVR) protection by accumulating mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) from their diet. High concentrations are often found in the eyes, but the localization of MAAs in specific fish eye tissues is unknown. In the present study we dissected the eyes of six fish species, and prepared cornea, lens, vitreous body and a mixed tissue sample consisting of retina, choroidea and sclera (RCS). Furthermore, to test if MAAs are transferred further up the food web, we investigated the occurrence of MAAs also in eyes of warm-blooded piscine predators. Most, but

FGF2 Deficiency Modulates Early Microglial Responses Without Affecting Photoreceptor Survival in a Retinitis Pigmentosa Mouse Model.

Fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) is expressed in retinal Müller glia cells, and its expression increases in response to photoreceptor degeneration. To investigate the physiological relevance of FGF2, we analyzed retinal morphology and cellular responses in Fgf2-deficient (Fgf2-/-) mice. Loss of FGF2 did not affect photoreceptor survival, retinal vasculature, or retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) integrity. To further understand its role in retinal degeneration, Fgf2-/- mice were crossed with Pde6bSTOP/STOP mice, a model of retinitis pigmentosa (RP). We then analyzed outer nuclear layer thicknes

Bi-allelic variants in FSD1L cause retinitis pigmentosa with or without neurological involvement.

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is an inherited retinal disease (IRD) characterized usually by progressive photoreceptor degeneration, leading to night blindness, peripheral visual field loss, and can progress to central vision impairment in some individuals. Despite advances in genomic diagnostics, many individuals with RP remain without a molecular diagnosis. We identified bi-allelic ultra-rare variants in fibronectin type II and Spry domain-containing protein 1-like (FSD1L) in six individuals with RP with or without neurological features from four unrelated families. FSD1L encodes a cytoplasmic p

Predictive model for proliferative diabetic retinopathy using single-cell transcriptomics.

Proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) is a severe and advanced complication of diabetic retinopathy, representing a leading cause of blindness worldwide. A hallmark of PDR is the formation of fibrovascular membranes (FVMs), which pose a significant threat to visual function due to their propensity to contract and exert traction on the retina. A comprehensive understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms is essential for addressing this condition effectively. Herein, we first integrated scRNA-seq data from nine FVMs of PDR patients and retinas from healthy donors obtained from the Gen

Event-driven retinomorphic photodiode with bio-plausible temporal dynamics.

Machine vision is indispensable in Industry 4.0 and autonomous driving, enabling the perception and reaction necessary to navigate dynamic environments. Current machine vision sensors, including frame-based and event-based types, often fall short due to their limited temporal dynamics compared with the human retina, hindering their overall performance and adaptability. In this work, we present an event-driven retinomorphic photodiode (RPD) that mimics the retina's layered structure and signal pathway. The RPD achieves this by vertically integrating an organic donor-acceptor heterojunction, an

Retinopathy-associated inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase 1 mutations cause metabolic and filament defects in cones.

Dominant variants in inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase 1 (IMPDH1), a key enzyme in the de novo synthesis of purine bases, cause progressive photoreceptor death, leading to blindness. To investigate the cause of degeneration, we generated the first mutant IMPDH1 animal models and expressed mutant forms of impdh1a in zebrafish cone photoreceptors. Unlike cones expressing exogenous normal impdh1a, cones containing impdh1a with the K238E mutation degenerated. Cones expressing impdh1a with the D226N mutation did not show significant cone loss by 2 years. Steady-state and flux metabolomics in zebr

A comparative study of the effectivity of MSC-based, NP-based and combined therapies in an experimental model of NaIO3-induced retinal degeneration.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) represent the promising options for retinal therapy and combined therapy with nanoparticles (NPs) could currently provide increased immunoregulatory and neuroprotective effects. Therefore, we tested the effect of silver (Ag)NPs on the properties of MSCs in an experimental model of chronic retinal degeneration. The results showed that simultaneous administration had no effect on the survival of MSCs, but a less effective local regulation of Iba-1 expression compared to MSC- or AgNP-only treated groups was observed. In addition, MSCs applied alone or in combination

Retinal imaging and tissue analysis for frontotemporal degeneration: recent advances and challenges for biomarker development.

Frontotemporal degeneration (FTD) is a group of neurodegenerative disorders affecting behaviour, language and executive functions. FTD is a common cause of early-onset dementia, but there are no FDA-approved treatments or established biomarkers for diagnosing and tracking these conditions, making early and accurate diagnosis challenging during life. Recent advances in retinal imaging, particularly through technologies like optical coherence tomography (OCT), have emerged as promising tools for identifying potential biomarkers for FTD and related neurodegenerative diseases. The retina, being an

The Connection Between Cellular Metabolism and Retinal Disease.

The retina is one of the most metabolically active tissues in the human body and has its own complex metabolic environment as the different cell types in this tissue are interconnected to maintain a healthy retinal homeostasis. Any disturbances in the homeostatic balance may have a severe impact on retinal function affecting vision. About 341 genes are listed in the RetNet database as being causative for monogenic inherited retinal diseases. By intersecting this list with the Mammalian Metabolic Enzyme Database, we identified 28 metabolic genes that can result in diseases such as retinitis pig

Conditional deletion of miR-204 and miR-211 in murine retinal pigment epithelium results in retinal degeneration.

MicroRNAs (miRs) are short, evolutionarily conserved noncoding RNAs that canonically downregulate expression of target genes. The miR family composed of miR-204 and miR-211 is among the most highly expressed miRs in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) in both mouse and human and also retains high sequence identity. To assess the role of this miR family in the developed mouse eye, we generated two floxed conditional KO mouse lines crossed to the RPE65-ERT2-Cre driver mouse line to perform an RPE-specific conditional KO of this miR family in adult mice. After Cre-mediated deletion, we observed
