[Paracoccidioides brasiliensis infection in a subtropical region with important environmental changes].

Paracoccidioidomycosis is a systemic mycoses caused by Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, a dimorphic fungus that infects man through respiratory ducts. It has been accepted that its ecological niche is located in the soil and plants of subtropical forests of Latin America. The Province of Corrientes is located at the northeastern border of Argentina, in a subtropical area where important environmental modifications have been introduced in the last decade as consequence of damming the Paranà river at Yacyretà, one of the biggest hydroelectric dams in the world. Since there are no data on human inf

Os intermetatarseum: a heritable accessory bone of the human foot.

The os intermetatarseum is a relatively common accessory bone of the human foot located at the tarsometatarsal border between the first and second metatarsals. It can occur as an independent ossicle or as an osseous spur projecting from the proximal ends of the first two metatarsals, or the distal end of the first cuneiform. To determine the frequency of this congenital defect in native North American groups and East Asians from Japan, the skeletons of 846 Native Americans and 125 modern Japanese and Ainu were examined for the presence of the os intermetatarseum. The North American skeletons a

Spectral sensitivity and mechanism of interaction between inhibitory and excitatory responses of photosensory pineal neurons.

The characteristics and distribution of chromatic-type neurons in the photosensory pineal organ of the river lamprey, Lampetra japonica, were investigated electrophysiologically. Neuronal activity was inhibited by light of short wavelengths and excited by middle to long wavelengths. The maximum sensitivities of the inhibitory and excitatory responses were at about 380 nm and 540 nm respectively. The spike activity of the neurons during steady illumination for a 10-min period was measured. Although a flash of short-wavelength light caused a strong inhibition in the neuron, this effect was not s

Improving mortality data in South Africa: review of next of kin statements to determine cause of death in police certification.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to improve mortality data by finding ways of reducing the large number of deaths certified as being from "ill-defined" causes (ICD 780-798) in South Africa. This problem is attributable to the absence of cause of death information in many cases where the police issue the death certificate. DESIGN AND SETTING: A total of 600 consecutive death certification records at the Salt River State Mortuary, Cape Town were reviewed. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Altogether 347 (58%) deaths were from unnatural causes, 111 (18%) were certified by a doctor, 83 (14%) were c

[Effect of a sublethal dose of an insect growth regulator on the physiology of onchocercosis vectors].

In most of the large scale vector control programs, the larviciding operations are not fully successful, resulting in a surviving vector population due to the use of sublethal doses. This problem leads the authors to study the effect of such doses upon the future of the residual population in order to know if it represents an epidemiologically dangerous population. One insect growth regulator was selected to study this phenomenon using Onchocerca volvulus as the parasite and Simulium damnosum s.l. as the vector. The experiment was conducted under field conditions by treating a river of a savan

Differences in the rate of hepatosplenomegaly due to Schistosoma mansoni infection between two areas in Machakos District, Kenya.

The relationship between intensity of Schistosoma mansoni infection and the degree of related morbidity was suspected to differ locally within the Machakos district of Kenya. To test this possibility, prevalences of hepatomegaly and splenomegaly among 1483 school children were compared between 2 areas, Kangundo and Kambu, within this district. These areas, which were similar in many geographical and economic respects and populated by the same tribe (Akamba), had comparable levels of S. mansoni infection and no S. haematobium infection. A relationship was observed between the prevalence of hepa

The socio-economic aspects of human onchocerciasis in Africa: present appraisal.

The pattern of socio-economic liability that has emerged due to human onchocerciasis in Africa has been particularly damaging. Due to debilitation and blindness, the sufferer is unable to maintain for long any type of productive activity. As a cause of permanent disability through blindness or serious visual impairment, it withdraws the affected individuals' potential supply of labour years of activity requiring vision. The desertation of many river valleys in the savannah zone that are agriculturally fertile have been attributed mainly to the effects of this disease. This has by definition, m

Onchocerciasis in Ecuador, 1980-1986: epidemiological evaluation of the disease in the Esmeraldas province.

An increase in both the prevalence (68.3%) and intensity of infection (106.2%) occurred in the Ecuadorian onchocercal focus during the 6 year period, 1980 to 1986. In 1986, a higher prevalence of infection was noted in males (53.6%) than females (33.1%), but a greater rate of increase of infection over the 6 years was seen in females than males (75.7% vs 61.9% respectively). In all endemic areas, the Chachi race had a higher prevalence of infection as well as higher increase rate of infection than the Black. In the hyperendemic and hypoendemic areas the highest increase of infection was seen i

[Nosological classification of bokhoror].

The results of neurological, pathomorphological and clinic-genealogical studies of vilyuisk encephalitis (VE), a chronic progressive disease of CNS, are presented. The disease is spread in Yakutija in Vilyui river basin (mainly in Vilyuisk and Kobyaisk regions) exclusively among native population and is known there since the middle of the last century. The results obtained suggest that VE (despite the existing opinion on its natural-focal virus etiology) is an ethnic hereditary disease with autosomal recessive type of transmission, is spread in a limited Yakut population by an ancestor effect

Prevalence of Potentially Pathogenic Antibiotic-Resistant Aeromonas spp. in Treated Urban Wastewater Effluents versus Recipient Riverine Populations: a 3-Year Comparative Study.

Antibiotic resistance continues to be an emerging threat both in clinical and environmental settings. Among the many causes, the impact of postchlorinated human wastewater on antibiotic resistance has not been well studied. Our study compared antibiotic susceptibility among Aeromonas spp. in postchlorinated effluents to that of the recipient riverine populations for three consecutive years against 12 antibiotics. Aeromonas veronii and Aeromonas hydrophila predominated among both aquatic environments, although greater species diversity was evident in treated wastewater. Overall, treated wastewa

Freshwater environments as reservoirs of antibiotic resistant bacteria and their role in the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes.

Freshwater environments are susceptible to possible contamination by residual antibiotics that are released through different sources, such as agricultural runoffs, sewage discharges and leaching from nearby farms. Freshwater environment can thus become reservoirs where an antibiotic impact microorganisms, and is an important public health concern. Degradation and dilution processes are fundamental for predicting the actual risk of antibiotic resistance dissemination from freshwater reservoirs. This study reviews major approaches for detecting and quantifying antibiotic resistance bacteria (AR

Latent turn-on fluorescent probe for the detection of toxic malononitrile in water and its practical applications.

A latent turn-on fluorescent probe for the detection of malononitrile (NCCH2CN), a precursor of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) in the mammalian tissue metabolism, is developed based on reaction-based fluorophore generation for the first time. Malononitrile is utilized within a wide spectrum of academic and industrial applications, and it is a key reagent to make o-chlorobenzylidene malononitrile (CS gas; tear gas), which is used for riot control. Due to its extensive use as well as potential health risks and the environmental pollution, malononitrile monitoring method has been required. In this paper,

Deployable Molecular Detection of Arboviruses in the Australian Outback.

The most common causes of human infection from the arboviruses that are endemic in Australia are the arthritogenic alphaviruses: Ross River virus (RRV) and Barmah Forest virus (BFV). The most serious infections are caused by the neurotropic flaviviruses, Murray Valley encephalitis virus (MVEV) and the Kunjin subtype of West Nile virus. The greatest individual risk of arbovirus infection occurs in tropical/subtropical northern Australia because of the warm, wet summer conditions from December to June, where conventional arbovirus surveillance is difficult due to a combination of low population

Spread and persistence of influenza A viruses in waterfowl hosts in the North American Mississippi migratory flyway.

UNLABELLED: While geographic distance often restricts the spread of pathogens via hosts, this barrier may be compromised when host species are mobile. Migratory waterfowl in the order Anseriformes are important reservoir hosts for diverse populations of avian-origin influenza A viruses (AIVs) and are assumed to spread AIVs during their annual continental-scale migrations. However, support for this hypothesis is limited, and it is rarely tested using data from comprehensive surveillance efforts incorporating both the temporal and spatial aspects of host migratory patterns. We conducted intensiv
