Longitudinal outcomes of high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infections as competing-risks events following cervical HPV test at baseline visit in the NIS-LAMS cohort.

BACKGROUND: The complex natural history of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections following a single HPV test can be modeled as competing-risks events (i.e., no-, transient- or persistent infection) in a longitudinal setting. The covariates associated with these competing events have not been previously assessed using competing-risks regression models. OBJECTIVES: To gain further insights in the outcomes of cervical HPV infections, we used univariate- and multivariate competing-risks regression models to assess the covariates associated with these competing events. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: C

Residential trajectory and HIV high-risk behaviors among Montréal street youth--a reciprocal relationship.

Evidence has linked residential instability and engagement in high-risk behaviors. This paper longitudinally examines the relationship between changes in residential stability and changes in HIV risk behaviors among Montréal street youth (SY). Between April 2006 and May 2007, 419 SY (18-25 years old) were recruited in a cohort study. SY (using Montréal street youth agencies services) were eligible if they had had at least one 24-hour episode of homelessness in the previous 30 days. Baseline and follow-up interviews, carried out every 3 months, included completion of a questionnaire (based on L

Genotype-specific clearance of genital human papillomavirus (HPV) infections among mothers in the Finnish family HPV study.

The majority of cervical human papillomavirus (HPV) infections in young women are transient, but whether the clearance differs among different HPV genotypes and the different factors predicting genotype-specific clearance are partly unknown. In the Finnish Family HPV Study, 131 of 252 women (mean age, 25.5 years) cleared their infection during the prospective follow-up of 6 years (median, 62.4 months; range, 1.6 to 94.5 months). Cervical scrapings collected at each visit were tested for 24 low-risk and high-risk (HR) HPV types with multiplex HPV genotyping. Poison regression (panel data) was u

Human vomeronasal anatomy indexes sexual behavior and reproductive vulnerability.

BACKGROUND: The biological relevance of the human vomeronasal organ (VNO) remains unresolved, and it is often considered a vestigial structure lacking sensory function. However, the VNO exhibits marked interindividual anatomical variability that may reflect underlying reproductive or neuroendocrine biology rather than chemosensory signaling. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 102 adults (77 females, 25 males) recruited from a clinical setting between 2024 and 2025. High-resolution nasal endoscopy was used to assess VNO size, vascularity, and pit morphology, which were combined i

Sexual minority status modifies the association between HIV risk behavior and prevalent mood or anxiety disorders in British Columbia, Canada.

PURPOSE: This study aimed at determining to what extent sexual minority status modifies the association between HIV risk behavior and prevalent mood or anxiety disorder diagnosis in British Columbia (BC), Canada, using a population-based survey. METHODS: This analysis was based on the cross-sectional 2013-2014 Canadian Community Health Survey. The sample was restricted to respondents in BC with valid responses to the survey items considered. A multivariable logistic model, where the behavioral HIV risk score exposure was nested into the sexual minority status modifier, estimated the odds of h

Health associations for male survivors of unwanted and non-consensual sex.

Literature has established that men with non-consensual sexual experiences exhibit a higher likelihood of engaging in high-risk sexual behaviors; however, previous research does not explore men with unwanted sexual experiences, nor their sexual and general health outcomes. Weighted data from the 2011-2017 National Survey of Family Growth included men aged 18-49 years who ever experienced oral, vaginal, or anal sex by partners of any gender (N = 10,763). The Pearson χ2 test compared the sociodemographic of men with or without a history of unwanted or non-consensual sex. Logistic regressions wer

Relationship between drug use and sexual behaviors and the occurrence of sexually transmitted diseases among high-risk male youth.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Sexually active adolescents, especially those in detention, are at high risk for acquisition of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV infection. Yet little information is available that describes their risk behaviors associated with STDs. The overall objective was to define the relationship between risk behaviors and STD acquisition among adolescents. GOALS OF THIS STUDY: The first goal was to characterize drug use and sexual behaviors that place a population of adolescent male detainees at STD/HIV risk. The second goal was to define possible interrela

Spatial Analysis of HIV Determinants Among Females Aged 15-34 in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa: A Bayesian Spatial Logistic Regression Model.

HIV remains a major public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa, with South Africa bearing the highest burden. This study confirms that KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) is a hotspot, with a high HIV prevalence of 47.4% (95% CI: 45.7-49.1) among females aged 15-34. We investigated the spatial distribution and key socio-demographic, behavioural, and economic factors associated with HIV prevalence in this group using a Bayesian spatial logistic regression model. Secondary data from 3324 females in the HIV Incidence Provincial Surveillance System (HIPSS) (2014-2015) in uMgungundlovu District, KZN, were analy

The TALE never ends: A comprehensive overview of the role of PBX1, a TALE transcription factor, in human developmental defects.

PBX1 is a highly conserved atypical homeodomain transcription factor (TF) belonging to the TALE (three amino acid loop extension) family. Dimerized with other TALE proteins, it can interact with numerous partners and reach dozens of regulating sequences, suggesting its role as a pioneer factor. PBX1 is expressed throughout the embryonic stages (as early as the blastula stage) in vertebrates. In human, PBX1 germline variations are linked to syndromic renal anomalies (CAKUTHED). In this review, we summarized available data on PBX1 functions, PBX1-deficient animal models, and PBX1 germline variat

Bathhouse-based voluntary counseling and testing is feasible and shows preliminary evidence of effectiveness.

The goal of this study was to provide evidence for the feasibility and effectiveness of conducting voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) for HIV in a bathhouse setting. Four hundred ninety-two men participated in bathhouse-based VCT offered at a single venue over a 13-month period. A convenience sample of 133 of these testers was assessed at 2 points: immediately before and 3 months after testing. Thirty-eight percent of men in the sample reported unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) with 1 of their 2 most recent partners in the 3 months before testing, and 48% of those men had not otherwise be
